Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments For my individual challenge I just need to get thru all these free books that I have accumulated from 2021. Those "free take me" library carts that I just couldn't resist. Those Sunday 1/2 half off books from the Thrift Store and Goodreads Giveaway winners, etc.
Goal is to read at least 50 of these books then fill in the other 25 with books that are being released in 2022 that I am looking forward to reading and ones from 2021 that I just didn't get to. I will also plan to read 25 series books. These will be series that I want to start or need to complete.

Great challenges. Personally, I hope you never clean off your bookshelves. May you always have books on display.

message 7: by Emily (new)

Emily (readerlover1995) | 195 comments Wow, Denise! That’s a long list, but good! I’d love to clean off my own bookshelf, but I think I’d end up buying more-so many I have to read! And I couldn’t handle it bare; of course I’m overflowing and need to do so.
Good luck on your challenge! 🐾

message 8: by Denise (new)

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments Even if I were to get these off my shelves I would still have over 400 more still sitting on them..lol

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 800 comments Good luck

Lea (leaspot) | 3629 comments Denise, I love how you have laid out your challenge. Sometimes I find that I don't put new releases on my list and then I don't read as many of them as I like. Good luck with your series challenges. I read the entire Thomas Cromwell - Wolf Hall series, and enjoyed them much more after I got used to the writing style. It was a little challenging at first for me. I loved the first book in A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, I hope you enjoy it too. (The other books weren't for me, but a lot of people love them and I hope you will too.) I read The Cruel Prince series last year, and I have to say, it was my favorite series of the year. It was the first time I've read a series by Holly Black, but now I want to read her other series as well. I'm hoping to read the King of Scars series this year also, as well as Midnight Sun, they are on my list. I also need to finish out the Caraval series and the Red Queen series (I only read the first book in both cases), and I'd love to get back to Cassandra Clare. It's been too long! Enjoy your reading!

Great idea Denise. I see Cackle in your list. So many folks have it on their lists, but I will wait until the reviews start coming in.

Good luck and happy reading

edit: moved my comment, so all of your categories would be together. sorry about commenting so soon.

Ioana | 2122 comments Interesting list, Denise, I like the way you organized it. I will follow your reviews, as you have a lot of titles I am not familiar with. I've only read Caraval (I enjoyed the 1st book, but not the 2nd one), so I'm curious about the 3rd one.
Good luck and happy reading!

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments New year has already brought me these five new books. Used my amazon gift card to get these:
The Curse Workers White Cat; Red Glove; Black Heart (Curse Workers, #1-3) by Holly Black Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows, #2) by Leigh Bardugo The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid Gilded (Gilded, #1) by Marissa Meyer .

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments Finished The Maid by Nita Prose , gave it 4.5 stars. Molly is a quirky, weird, unusual and wonderful character that simply wants to see the best in everyone. A worker bee that takes pride in everything that she does. The story flows so easily that you fall in love with the character and are rooting for her. Mixed in a mystery that needs to be solved and in the end all is revealed that left me very satisfied.

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments Finished Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng , gave it 4 stars.

This book will leave you with a lot to think about. I enjoyed the characters and the background on the characters, but the story did drag a bit and I was left at the end wanting more with such an abrupt ending.

message 24: by Denise (new)

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments Finished Serendipity by Marissa Meyer , gave it 3 stars.
This book was not for me. 10 short stories that are more for a teen audience than adult. I liked maybe 2 of the stories, the other 8 were just average. My favorite story was Shooting Stars by Marissa Meyer.

message 26: by Denise (new)

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments Finished The Little Red Chairs by Edna O'Brien , gave it 2 stars.
I had such a hard time reading this book. The writing was so uneven, I felt so disconnected from the characters, and the story was unconvincing. It was a very slow start just dragged until the end.

message 27: by Denise (new)

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments Finished Lucky Man by Michael J. Fox , gave it 4 stars.
This book will take you on a journey about Michael J Fox's early life and his battle with Parkinson's Disease. I have been a fan of Michael J Fox since his tv series Family Ties and was just a shocked as everyone when he announced his battle with his disease. This book was entertaining as well as inspiring.

message 30: by Denise (new)

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments Finished A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw , gave it 5 stars.
I felt like I was transported to Pastoral and immersed right into the middle of this story. Secrets, Lies and Mystery and that is just the beginning. The story had interesting characters and I loved all the little breadcrumbs that were weaved through out the story.

message 31: by Denise (new)

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments I finished The Island by Elin Hilderbrand , gave it 3.5 stars. It was a good story just not as strong as her newer books.

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments Finished The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams , gave it 5 stars. This was part of a buddy read and I loved it. I was hooked from the first chapter. If I had to create my own reading list to share with others that moved me this would be my list:

11/22/63 by Stephen King
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
Still Alice by Lisa Genova
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments Completed Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly , gave it 5 stars. Definitely one of the more gruesome accounts of what happened at concentration camps during World War II that I have read, but it a story that needed to be told. The author has a way of taking you on a journey with the characters through out the novel and make you fall in love with the characters.

message 50: by Denise (new)

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments Finished The Lifeguards by Amanda Eyre Ward , gave it 4 stars. The book overall was good and I enjoyed the twists and turns. I thought the ending was a little rushed and a few loose ends left up to interpretation with no real explanation. I liked that the characters all had their own secret backstories that they kept from each other. It showed how far a mother would go to protect their child. Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
