Thanks, Bill! It's official, I finally read a book (by accident) set partially in North Dakota, so my state challenge is finally done. So many years. Over a long long period, I have read books that I rated at least three stars in every state now. I'm still looking for my personal best book set in each state. Last year, I picked up 30 states, hopefully 2022 will take me some fun places also.

Lea (leaspot) | 3635 comments I started Post #1 over for January, I already have regrets. I got 30 states in 2021, we'll see what happens in 2022.

January books - 9/50
Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars - Mostly California
The Ugly Truth and Cabin Fever - Massachusetts
A Good Neighborhood - North Carolina
The Queen's Gambit - Mostly Kentucky (some New York, Mexico, Paris and Soviet Union)
Stay Close - New Jersey
Broken - Texas
Farewell Summer - Illinois
Sweet Sanctuary - New York
Cabin Fever - Massachusetts
We Are the Brennans - New York
The Rest of the Robots - short stories from Virginia, Wyoming, New York, and Massachusetts, I'm counting Wyoming since that's the one I think will be most difficult to get!

message 6: by Lea (last edited Feb 23, 2022 09:43AM) (new)

Lea (leaspot) | 3635 comments February books - 12/50

The Caves of Steel - New York
My Soul Sings - Arkansas
Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman - Arizona (also Washington State & Afghanistan)
Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family - Colorado
People We Meet on Vacation - I'm counting this book for Croatia, because it was bugging me to have the same book on my Around the World Challenge for both Croatia and Malta. So, I'm not going to count it for a State also, although the book is about a travel writer, so there are sections about Ohio, California (Palm Springs and San Francisco), New York, Florida (Sanibel Island), Tennessee (Nashville), Colorado (Vail), Canada (Vancouver Island in British Columbia), Italy (Tuscany region) and Croatia (Dubrovnik and Brac).
Daughter of the Deep - California
The Third Wheel - Massachusetts
Summer Morning, Summer Night - Illinois

Lea (leaspot) | 3635 comments March books - 14/50

Klara and the Sun - Wisconsin
A Time for Mercy - Mississippi
Hard Luck - Massachusetts
Malibu Rising - California

message 8: by Lea (last edited May 02, 2022 09:23AM) (new)

Lea (leaspot) | 3635 comments April books - 16/50

The Long Haul - Massachusetts
The Anthropocene Reviewed - Indiana - I'm counting this because there was a lot of discussion about the author's home, the Indianapolis Speedway, etc.
The Mysterious Island - Virginia - Well, the mysterious island is in the middle of nowhere (probably closest to the Cook Islands on a map) but the first part of the story takes place in Richmond, Virginia, so I will use that. :-)

You're doing great, quite a whirl wind tour of the US

Lea (leaspot) | 3635 comments Bill wrote: "You're doing great, quite a whirl wind tour of the US"

Thanks, I like this challenge because it seems to counterbalance my series books. Most series tend to set in the same place, with the exception of books about spies and detectives and stuff, so doing both at the same time keeps me getting through my series, but also traveling a little bit also! :-)

That seems like a good plan.

Lea (leaspot) | 3635 comments Total states 18/50 (for detail see message #1)

May books below:

Old School - Massachusetts
The Blue Bistro - Massachusetts
Robots and Empire - Mostly off planet, but four or five chapters were set in New York City
The Blind Side - Tennessee
Long Bright River - Pennsylvania
Double Down - Massachusetts

Lea (leaspot) | 3635 comments Total states 20/50 (for detail see message #1)

June books below:

Washington State - Midnight Sun, Jar of Hearts, The Last House on Needless Street - Apparently once I got to Washington State, I couldn't leave. :-) (I hadn't read any books from Washington State in 2022 thus far, and then I read three.)
Illinois - The Woman They Could Not Silence: One Woman, Her Incredible Fight for Freedom, and the Men Who Tried to Make Her Disappear
Bonus: Washington DC - All the President's Men
Massachusetts - The Getaway
Florida - Camino Winds
Texas - The Last Thing He Told Me So I already have both California and Texas covered so far this year and this book is set equally in both. Since the most interesting parts of the book are set in Austin Texas, I'm going to put this book in Texas. :-)
Massachusetts - The Meltdown

Lea (leaspot) | 3635 comments Total states 26/50 (For year to date information, see message #1)

July books below:

Maryland - The Shape of Water
California - Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism
Colorado - Sadie
New York - Closing Time
Massachusetts - Wrecking Ball, The Deep End
Texas - The Complete Robot (This is a compilation of short stories, many of which I'd already read in other compilations. The only short story that I hadn't already read that was set on Earth was set in Dallas, Texas, so that's what I will use. I've already been to Texas a few times this year, but to San Antonio and Austin, not to Dallas.)
Georgia - An American Marriage - The book was also set in Louisiana, it was hard to decide which state to pick. But Georgia was the nickname of one of the MC and it seemed like most of the action was in Georgia, although some of the key pieces to the book happened in Louisiana.
Nebraska - The Lincoln Highway - replaced Fangirl on my best state list. I really enjoyed this book.
Connecticut - Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty
Maine - Olive, Again
Oregon - Red Clocks

LOL, I might take that long...we'll have to see. I certainly have visited Massachusetts and California enough for all of us, but I'm going to have to make some effort for Rhode Island. :-)

California - The Final Girl Support Group
Indiana - Somebody's Daughter

Thanks! So far, I haven't really been trying, but I fear I'm going to have to make more of an effort next year, since the "easy" states have already been picked off. But you never know? If someone would have told me I'd read 3(!!!) books in Vermont before I'd read a single book set in Louisiana, I would not have believed it!

I read Homegoing, which is a fantastic book. Part of the book is set in Ghana and the rest of the book is set in several spots in the USA, primarily Alabama, but also New York and California. I was going to count it for Alabama, but I already have a 5-star book for Alabama, so I'm going to count it for Ghana and now have a 5-star book in Ghana. I was most drawn to the portion of the story that was set in Ghana anyway.

Lea (leaspot) | 3635 comments Yes! I have eight states left. Of those eight states, I do know I have three books that are on my shelves right now that I just need to squeeze in somehow. I'm not sure about the other five, we'll see!

Iowa - I was given a book set in Iowa last year, I should just read that!
Minnesota - One of the books on my list is partially set in Minnesota!
New Hampshire -
North Dakota -
Rhode Island - I was given a book set in Rhode Island last year, I should just read that!
South Dakota -
Utah -
West Virginia - There's a children's book I want to read.

Lea (leaspot) | 3635 comments I got off count somewhere, I have only seven states to go! :-)

Edit: Oops, my mistake was thinking that I had gotten off count somewhere. My original tally was correct, 8 states to go.
