Tackle That TBR is back for a 5th round!

This year's theme is A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes

Like last year, there a total of 52 prompts, and you get to choose which level and which prompts you want to complete. The prompts are listed by category to make it easier to pick.

LEVELS
Royalty: 12 books
Fairy Godmother: 24 books
Villain: 52 books (option to do impossible level—aka Supervillain)

For the Impossible level only. If you're not doing the Impossible Challenge, read whatever you want that fits the prompt, no page or time limits. What counts for the Impossible level:
a. books over 150 pages
b. ebooks over 40,000 words
c. audiobooks over 1.5 hours
d. graphic novels/comics over 150 pages

CATEGORIES

Yeah, there's gonna be some Cinderella ~history~ here, because the different versions are a lot more exciting than the 1950 Disney cartoon.

Yeh-Shen. Did you know there are between 500-800 different versions of Cinderella? Yeh-Shen is thought to be one of the original written versions, originating in Tang Dynasty China around the 9th century CE. Instead of a ball there was a festival, there's a magical fish involved, and she does lose an object (slipper, anklet, etc) that is found by either the lordling/prince or one of his underlings.
Impossible level: all BIPOC or LGBTQ+ authors
1. Read a book published before 1900
2. Read a classic (published before 1950) written by a BIPOC author
3. Read a book written with two POVs
4. Read a book that's been on your TBR over four years
5 Read a book published when you were 10
6. Read the longest book on your TBR
7. Read a 2022 release from a debut author
8. Read a five-star (to you) book

Cendrillon . The most popular version of Cinderella comes from French author Charles Perrault, who added the pumpkin, the fairy godmother and the glass slippers in 1697 (the slippers were originally fur)—he riffed off an Italian version called Cenerentola.
Impossible level: read the winner instead of the nominee, and read a PBC Group read in the month it was featured)
1. Read a 2022 PBC Group Read
2. Read a Goodreads Choice nominee book
3. Read a Nebula/Hugo/Locus Award finalist
4. Read a Man Booker Prize, Women's Prize for Fiction, or Pulitzer shortlist book
5. Read a book that's popular on Booktok
6. Read a translated bestseller
7. Read a National Book Award For YA Literature nominee, Odyssey Award shortlist, William C Morris nominee, a Lambda Literary Award Winner, or Kirkus Prize for YA Literature nominee

Aschenputtel . The Grimms brothers version, written in the 19th century. It's a lot more violent than the Perrault version, and has a tree (that rose from Cinderella's mother's grave) instead of a fairy godmother.
Impossible level: make it all ownvoices
1. Read a LGBTQ+ fairy tale retelling
2. Read a book that has been turned into a movie or tv show
3. Read a book that is based on a video game, board game, or comic book
4. Read a retelling of a classic (e.g., Peter Pan, Little Women, The Great Gatsby, etc)
5. Read a mythological retelling (e.g., Greek mythology, the Bhagavad Gita, Arthurian legend, etc)
6. Read an book with creatures from legend (e.g., Coyote, vampires, gumiho, golems, djinn, etc)

Donkeyskin . Another version of Cinderella, although from here on out I'm branching into different variations according to the Aarne-Thompson-Uther Index (a folklore catalog, so cool!). In the Donkeyskin variations, Cinderella is a princess who runs away from her father (there's often an element of incest involved, it's pretty icky), takes up a position in a rival kingdom as a server and falls in love with its ruler (sometimes she loses her ring and he finds it in a cake).
Impossible level: stick with either the cover or title for the whole category
1. Read a book with a red cover or shade of red in the title
2. Read a book with a orange or yellow cover, or orange or yellow in the title
3. Read a book with a green cover or shade of green in the title
4. Read a book with a blue cover or a shade of blue in the title
5. Read a book with a purple cover or a shade of purple in the title

Cap O'Rushes . A lot like Donkeyskin with the princess/girl running away from her family, but minus the incest and with the addition of the "love test" (the father asking his children to compete for his love and her saying something like "I love you more than meat loves salt"). Anywho, generally ends with the princess finding love in another kingdom/estate, her now-destitute father unwittingly entering her new kingdom and her showing that she was sincere in her meaning and him realizing he's been a dick to his favorite child.
Impossible level: all BIPOC authors
1. Read a book with this, that or these in the title
2. Read a book with a celestial title or cover
3. Read a book where the title is a song lyric
4. Read a book with gemstones or precious metals in the title
5. Read a book with a type of insect in the title
6. Read a book with dream in the title
7. Read a book with wolf/wolves in the title or on the cover
8. Read a book with a type of flower in the title
9. Read a book with blood or bone in the title
10. Read the book with the prettiest cover on your TBR

Cinderfella . Yup, genderbent Cinderella! There are a couple of Celtic versions, where the young man has a mean stepfamily and big feet, and after doing several heroic deeds before a princess he runs off and leaves his boot or shoe and she searches for him. This is more of a "hero" type of Cinderella, where the protagonist is more active.
Impossible level: make it all ownvoices
1. Read a book written by a Pacific Islander
2. Read a book written by a Latine(x/o/a) author
3. Read a book set in or by someone from the Caribbean
4. Read a book written by a South Asian author
5. Read a book written by a West Asian author
6. Read an #ownvoices book by a Jewish author
7. Read a book by an Indigenous author
8. Read an #ownvoices book about body positivity
9. Read a book by a trans or gender nonconforming author

Vasilisa . Another hero-type tale, with Vasilisa being sent off an a hopeless task (get candles, etc) and meeting Baba Yaga. Sometimes the story ends with her outwitting Baba Yaga, other times the story continues past that (or Baba Yaga is more of a helper type) and Vasilisa leaves her family's home and meets a prince.
Impossible level: all LGBTQ+ authors
1. Read a book featuring a natural disaster
2. Read a book set in space
3. Read a book set in the 1990s
4. Read a book with a map
5. Read a book set during summer
6. Read a book with a climate change theme
7. Read a gothic horror book

Yes, Impossible level folks (if anyone goes Impossible): this is the beginning of your (super)villain origin story.

1. Read a book published before 1900
2. Read a classic (published before 1950) written by a BIPOC author
3. Read a book written with two POVsHeartstopper: Volume One
4. Read a book that's been on your TBR over four yearsDoctor Sleep
5 Read a book published when you were 10
6. Read the longest book on your TBR
7. Read a 2022 release from a debut author
8. Read a five-star (to you) bookThumbprint

Cendrillon . The most popular version of Cinderella comes from French author Charles Perrault, who added the pumpkin, the fairy godmother and the glass slippers in 1697 (the slippers were originally fur)—he riffed off an Italian version called Cenerentola.

1. Read a 2022 PBC Group Read
2. Read a Goodreads Choice nominee book
3. Read a Nebula/Hugo/Locus Award finalist
4. Read a Man Booker Prize, Women's Prize for Fiction, or Pulitzer shortlist book
5. Read a book that's popular on Booktok
6. Read a translated bestseller
7. Read a National Book Award For YA Literature nominee, Odyssey Award shortlist, William C Morris nominee, a Lambda Literary Award Winner, or Kirkus Prize for YA Literature nominee

Aschenputtel . The Grimms brothers version, written in the 19th century. It's a lot more violent than the Perrault version, and has a tree (that rose from Cinderella's mother's grave) instead of a fairy godmother.

1. Read a LGBTQ+ fairy tale retelling
2. Read a book that has been turned into a movie or tv showThe Lightning Thief
6. Read an book with creatures from legend (e.g., Coyote, vampires, gumiho, golems, djinn, etc)Wraith

1. Read a book with a red cover or shade of red in the title
2. Read a book with a orange or yellow cover, or orange or yellow in the titleThe Cape: 1969
3. Read a book with a green cover or shade of green in the titleDawn and the Impossible Three
4. Read a book with a blue cover or a shade of blue in the titleMary Anne Saves the Day
5. Read a book with a purple cover or a shade of purple in the titleEscape from the Carnival of Horrors

1. Read a book featuring a natural disaster
2. Read a book set in space
3. Read a book set in the 1990sThe Truth About Stacey
4. Read a book with a map
5. Read a book set during summer
6. Read a book with a climate change theme
7. Read a gothic horror book

Going with Fairy Godmother!

0/24

5. Read a book set during summer
6. Read a book with a climate change theme
