Verónica | 417 comments Hello Everyone!

My name is Veronica and I'm your team captain for this year UNO challenge. This is so much fun! And I bet you'll make a pretty big dent on your TBR list. This activity is excellent to keep you motivated on your reading, maybe find something new and exciting to read, or just give a playful spin to your reading habits.

The team spreadsheet at the beginning of the thread is just for captain and co-captain to work on.

Below is a link to a spreadsheet so we can keep track on what everyone is reading, so if you already have some books planned please log them in:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Please send me your email address so I can provide access for editing.

I'll love to hear from you, maybe a little introduction about who you are and what you like (books, food, life).

I'm from Mexico, mother of three and a housewife, taking some time off from physics research. I like to read almost anything, but I do prefer non-fiction, mostly science, history, and psychology. I do enjoy fiction like classics, sci-fi (Dune is on my TBR for this year, yay!), thrillers, horror and historical fiction. I love music, playing the guitar and being at home with my family.

Looking forward to playing UNO with you all!

Verónica | 417 comments Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count (Feb 1st, at 9 am UTC time).

Feel free to ask any questions you have about the game, I know it can seem a lot if it's the first time but once you get the gist of it will be a smooth sailing. We still have time to get ready.

message 16: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Hi there, my name is Corina and this will be my first year playing UNO, so I'm not super familiar with all the rules, but hopefully will figure it out :)
I've done a few buddy reads now with Vanessa and Bella, so I'm happy to be on this team and excited to meet everyone else :)
I'm Romanian, but I've been living in New Zealand since 2017, moved here with my now husband when he was offered a job. I have an 18 month old boy who I love spending time with. I work as an HR Advisor, so books are my time to myself.
I read and love most genres I guess, mostly historical fiction, thriller/mystery, contemporary, fantasy, romance, non fiction if the topic interests me.
This is the link to my UNO shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
Looking forward to playing UNO with you all!

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments Hi Teammates! This will be my first time participating in Uno, so I'm sure I'll have some questions and need some help along the way. I am excited that Uno will help me get some books off my physical TBR list and have a little fun while doing it. I really seem to like all genres, except I'm rarely drawn to reading romance.

Should we start looking at what books we have that would be good matches to the cards that we have been given for the whole month of February?

My goodreads Uno shelf is: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Melanie (mvalente89) | 296 comments Hello team! I'm Melanie from New Jersey (US) where I live with my husband and 2 cats. I work in finance, so I deal with numbers all day. I primarily read romance and mystery/thrillers with the occasional urban fantasy or sci-fi. High/epic fantasy is one of the few genres I won't read.

This is I think my fifth UNO so I'm fairly familiar with how everything goes. I have requested access to our working spreadsheet (email starts with mkornacki89).

Here is my UNO shelf.

Verónica | 417 comments Hi Corina, Melanie & JoJo_theDoDo, welcome!

Yes definitely this couple of weeks before the game starts are ideal to begin our planning for the month, and also to try clear some questions you may have. Make sure you first read the READ ME FIRST : All About the UNO Team Challenge post.

On the Dune spreadsheet you'll see a tab with our February cards, or like our co-captain Vanessa did we will be posting a list for a much easier view.

One of the strategies we could follow is to tackle some of the pesky color cards first. We can log in the spreadsheet the books we have for those. If you don't have any, no worries, just log everything you have for the other cards.

Okay, sorry I already have a few questions about the spreadsheet...
I notice on the February tab a book has been entered already. Beloved by Toni Morrison. It shows it's been read already.

1. Does this count since the challenge doesn't start until Feb 1st?

2. I also have this same book on my TBR that I could read. Can two group members read the same book and get points for it?

3. Do you want us to only enter the books as we have completed reading them (noticed a finish date column) or go ahead and enter any book that we have that can be used in the challenge?

1 - The first line it's just an example.
2 - Yes, two members can read the same book and count for different cards. There's also the Reverse card, that is for books another member has already read.
3 - Enter any book you are planning to read. If you don't finish it or change your mind just leave it without finished date or delete it later.

Corina | 2768 comments Thank you, Verónica! I have access to the spreadsheet as well and will look at adding some books there in the next day or so. Will definitely look for the coloured ones first.

message 26: by Kira (new)

Kira (kirac) | 22 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Kira. I'm from Alberta (Canada) and am really looking forward to playing Uno with you all. This will be my first time.

I work full-time as a veterinarian (on cattle, dogs, and cats). I have 2 dogs of my own - a Great Dane (Charles) and a St. Bernard (Ravi), who are excellent reading buddies.

I read primarily romance (Of most sub-genres - contemporary, dark, paranormal, fantasy, YA, etc), but may be convinced to read the odd thriller or general fiction book.

The end of my current team challenge with another group (Romance Reader's Reading Challenges) will overlap with Uno most of February. So I will be trying to double up based on whatever tasks are called there. I'm also a mood reader. So, I wasn't expecting to be planning too far ahead. Is that Okay? I'm happy to fill whatever gaps are left. I enjoy a good book hunt. Between unread books I own, unread free ebooks, kindle unlimited, kobo unlimited, an audible subscription, and a couple different library cards, I can almost always find something. I'll definitely look ahead for colour cards though.

Here's a link to my Uno Shelf. How exactly is the Uno shelf used? Do we put books we've READ during the challenge there? Or books we're PLANNING to read?

I have also requested permission for the spreadsheet. Email starting with "kira".

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments Heyya Everyone!

I'm so excited to meet all of u guys!

Its my second year playing this challenge n I had so much fun playing last year that I signed up this year too!

I am from India but I completed most of my education in Dubai. I love reading but for few years it took a slight back seat as I shifted all my focus into my exams.

My favorite genre is Mystery & Thrillers. But I also love reading YA, Romance, General Fiction and Graphic novels (sad that they are not considered here!). There are a few authors whom I love and whose books I never miss out on. But I do enjoy discovering new books and trying out new genre. guys!!

I know Corina and Bella here!!! Thanks to them I have been able to read more books of different genre.

Hi Kira!

No planning necessary, some people like to do it and it might be helpful at the beginning but there's always a few elusive cards we have to look for and mood readers usually come to the rescue. I'm a little bit of both, I have a list of prospects but I always drop a few down the road and get something new that catches my fancy.

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments Okay I entered nine books (my estimated number of books for the month) into the spreadsheet that could fit the cards for February. Are we going to confirm which guild members are taking the color cards, just to make sure we're not duplicating efforts or time that could be spent on reading other books?

Yes, with the color cards or the more difficult ones (5's and 7's usually) we will agree on who reads what. We will wait till next week to see if more teammates log in their books and then decide based on what we have.

Heli | 121 comments Hi Guys!

I'm Heli from Finland. I've played three or four times before. I'm married and have two adult sons. I'm a practical nurse and work with people with intellectual disabilities. I work all three shifts irregularly.

My favorite genre is mystery/thriller. I read fantasy, romance, historical fiction and sci-fi too when they fit my challenges. I mostly do audiobooks and I don't like to plan ahead, but I love finding books that fit specific task.

message 34: by Kira (last edited Jan 19, 2022 12:02AM) (new)

Kira (kirac) | 22 comments Is there any proof needed for a book to qualify?

Like if you're using a character's name or location to qualify, does that name or location need to be found on the book's goodreads page (Precis/setting/characters/shelves)? So it's easily verifiable?
Or is it more based on the honor system? So, you can use secondary characters, last names, settings, etc that are only found within the text?

Also wondering about page numbers. How do you know which edition is the default edition?
If the kindle edition is only 89 pages, but the paperback is 150, would it qualify?
Ex: Secrets We Hunt (One Night #2) by Dana Isaly

Also two-word surnames.
Ex: de Haas, Da'Neer, D'Ath
I'm thinking with a space maybe de Haas could count for H?
But the other 2 with apostrophes may be categorized as D?

I have input ~10 books (My usual monthly reads) in the spreadsheet to get a feel for things. 100% not set in stone - fully expecting some to change. 4s, 5s, and 7s are proving to be toughest for me with names starting with F, I, V seeming to be in short supply. I might do a little more digging for those.

It appears Johanna and Veronica have found books for all this month's colour cards already! Wow. Good work.

Bella | 1177 comments Hi everyone! I'm Bella and I'm from California (US). I'm an engineer who spends all day drafting on the computer, so all I do is listen to audiobooks all day!

This is my first year playing Uno as well, and I'm excited to be on this team with you all! I enjoy pretty much every genre but I find that I lean more towards fantasy and romance novels. I'm also a mood reader, so I'll be happy to fill in any spots we need :)

message 36: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments Hey Kira, there's no proof as such but it generally is the version that "you" are reading that qualifies.

Also, in case of names of characters and location. It doesn't necessarily need to be found on Goodreads page but it has to have a significance to the plot. If it's just a passerby or something that's casually mentioned, does not qualify. So if u feel those secondary characters or places are important and constantly featuring in the plot, you can definitely consider them!

message 37: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments F,I,V are some of the difficult ones... but I'm sure once we start reading we will find some characters or places :)

Hi Kira.

For the most part about names and such is more an honor system, since not all books have that info complete on GR, not all characters and settings in most cases, sometimes none. There's some things that do get checked, like the color of covers, it must be at least 50% the color, there's some tools on the web to check things like that, like TinEye (https://labs.tineye.com/color/), but is not the only one.

They also check the length of the books, but the only way is with the GR book page. So it is an honor system in the sense that you are picking what you are reading. No way to tell otherwise.

I'm not sure about the apostrophe names. Let me check that one with the mods and get back to you.

In cases like Da'Neer and D'Ath is D the first letter. If it said "da Neer", then it could be N. Like in "de Haas" it's H.

That's great!

Color cards can be repeated (we've got 3 "Wild Draw 4" cards for those), so if we have duplicates it's good. We don't have to start with color cards but the fact we've found them makes it flow.

Thanks! It doesn't impact how far ahead we log our books as much as they're logged in as soon as they're finished, or when we start reading them, that's even better. And I think you 'll enjoy the scavenge during the mini challenge induced panic, haha. Just kidding, it's fun.

It's a challenge within the challenge on week 3 of every month. It's themed and requires more specificity on the books picked. But the same books work for both the main and mini challenge.

message 49: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments Oh man! I hope I can handle the mini challenge! I tend to get overwhelmed easily. If we notice we need a specific book to fill a card I am willing to jump in and help though.

message 50: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Hello everyone.

Just checking in, how is everybody doing? how was your weekend?

It seems Verity doesn't cut it for the green 7 so I'm taking that one off for that card, but I saw other book logged in for that. I realized they're pretty hard to find. So if you run into one of those, hold on to it, just in case it pops up again.

Every teammate has checked in, and hopefully everybody is still on board. If someone realizes they can't, please give a heads up. Challenge starts next week.

I'm more of the philosophy of chillin' at the beginning, everybody starts reading whatever they want, and as we progress (maybe around week 3) we can reassess and start looking for specifics. Then we can start claiming cards or agreeing on who reads what in order to complete our hands. I'd like to know your opinions.

See you around!
