I read this book. Initially I was a bit taken aback with all the sexual violence. Your review Alwynne cleared up a lot of things for me, especially the historical perspective. As I sat ruminating over it, I realised how true to life it actually is, how close it seemed to me - someone from another country another time.

Thank you, I'm so glad it made some sense. I know exactly what you mean about some of the scenes, the fact that they involved a child made them that much harder to deal with. But they also seemed to fit very well with what I've read about Weimar society, and they reminded me too the regimes in the later The Child Manuela and the earlier The Confusions of Young Törless.
