It also really reminded me of Red Queen.. Like.. near identical down to the politics and history of the "gifted" ones. Can someone please tell me they see it too?
The Russian in this is awful and even though I know the book is "loosely based on Russian history/culture" it's.. pretty bad.
I am saying this again, even though I've said this so many times now but please, Kvas is not an alcoholic beverage *sobs* it's a soft drink.

Actually…
Most ya fantasy novel have the same blueprint…
Or maybe 4 formats in total.
This book in particular follows…
(Slight spoilers)
A seemingly normal MC is found to be ‘special’ or ‘chosen one’ ➡️ Taken to a place which seems magical and fantastical in first view ➡️ Fantastical place is in fact not fantastical but dark ➡️ Mc almost gives up ➡️ Then doesn’t, works to fix ➡️ Plot Climax ➡️ Ending which implies a sequel.
