And Jade narrates the quirky history of Proofrock as if it is one of those movies. But when blood actually starts to spill into the waters of Indian Lake, she pulls us into her dizzying, encyclopedic mind of blood and masked murderers, and predicts exactly how the plot will unfold.

Yet, even as Jade drags us into her dark fever dream, a surprising and intimate portrait emerges… a portrait of the scared and traumatized little girl beneath the Jason Voorhees mask: angry, yes, but also a girl who easily cries, fiercely loves, and desperately wants a home. A girl whose feelings are too big for her body.

My Heart Is a Chainsaw is her story, her homage to horror and revenge and triumph.

(view spoiler)[not gonna lie, i'm a bit really confused about what's going on! the beginning/prologue was spooky i suppose, but then it just went to jade's pov and that was just...meh. alright. not too sure about my feelings for jade yet though! (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ i feel like i need to reread this at a later date to really enjoy it more. i wasn't as sucked in as i thought i'd be, and though some parts were interesting, all the info being thrown at me was stressinggg. i had pretty much no idea what was happening - well, i did technically know but at the same time it was just...i wasn't that connected to it? it's like seeing someone else read i suppose. not gonna lie, i did end up skimming lots of parts due to my disinterest. i'll maybe give it another try next year or something (hide spoiler)]

I really like it so far. I like the way the author interweaves a paper on horror that the MC is writing to her high school history teacher, and actual events happening in the MC's hometown that seem to mirror a slasher film. Being a horror fan, I am really enjoying all the references back to horror movies.

I'm 21% in to this book and I really like it so far.

Being a horror fan, I am really enjoying all the references back to horror movies.

Yes! I really liked those parts. The author must have done some research. It really shows Jade's enthusiasm and knowledge. They also break up the rest of the story.

(view spoiler)[ There are so many twists here. I wouldn't be surprised if it were Theo. Those kinds of families always have something going on. They're too perfect. I felt so bad for Jade when they were all grilling her about her father. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[This book was totally unique in that I've seen Scream (I love how often it was referenced) but I never read anything about someone so obsessed with horror movies. And that she was so involved in this from the beginning when she got the phone, even if she didn't know who it belonged to, all the way to the end. It was one of those instances where the character was super odd but the perfect person for the job, though no one really listened to her. (hide spoiler)]
