Round One | January 20-February 2

Letter: P

Category: Animal

Any pet or animal in the story - either their given name or animal classification.

Example:
If the letter called for this was Z, you could read:

A book that has an animal named Zoe (PET'S GIVEN NAME)
A book with a zebra in it (ANIMAL CLASSIFICATION)

If by chance there's a book with a zebra called Zoe, it would still only be worth one point unless the animal was called Zoe the Zebra in the story at least once.

***Please mention in your book submission a sentence from the book where the animal is mentioned.

*❀Books must be 150+ pages and started/finished/posted during the round (January 20-February 2)

message 6: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen Garrison | 14 comments Just to clarify ... I am reading a book with "P" in the title, but the pet's name does not start with P. So that book would not count then. Correct?

message 7: by Melanie, ✞Moderator, Avid Reader, & Blogger ✞ (new)

Melanie (lovebeingvegan) | 9915 comments Mod
Correct. For this category the title doesn't matter. You only get points for an animal found/mentioned IN the story.

examples:

pony, poodle, puppy, pig, etc. (1 point)
Penny the poodle; My puppy, Penny; Penny is a Pit Bull. (2 points)

message 8: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen Garrison | 14 comments Thanks!

message 9: by Christine (new)

Christine Indorf | 2 comments I am only getting 1 point today
Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper
has a puppy in it her name is butterscotch.

message 10: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Osborn | 35 comments So am I reading the point system correctly? Is it a max of two points for the animal? Like you wouldn’t get additional points if it mentioned pony, puppy, penguin, porpoise?

Ashley wrote: "So am I reading the point system correctly? Is it a max of two points for the animal? Like you wouldn’t get additional points if it mentioned pony, puppy, penguin, porpoise?"

There's no max points, but it can only be one animal. So if you could find a book that mentions a pinto pony named Princess Penny, that would be worth 4 points (don't even think there could be a book with that, but maybe?).

Round Two | February 3-February 16

Letter: S

Category: Secondary Female character

This would be any female character who is not one of the leads in the story (lead(s) = mentioned in description/blurb). She might be mentioned only once in the story, but that would still count.

If more than one of the her names (first, middle, and/or last) begin with the chosen letter, it will be worth more points (1 point for each name beginning with the letter).

***Please mention in your book submission a sentence from the book where the character is mentioned.

*❀Books must be 150+ pages and started/finished/posted during the round (February 3-16)

Andrea wrote: "Melanie, I have a circus book that has a side act called "Seven Sutherland Sisters." They always appeared together. Would that count for this round?"

Hmm. I'm thinking no, since it has to be the name of a single secondary female character - not a group. :( i.e. Sally Sue Smith.

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Melanie, would "Sarah Sabola, alias Sarah Lyons" count for three points? It's two different identities for the same woman.

message 20: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Another thought: If we found something like "Secret Service Agent Sarah McGivens," would that count for three points?

Andrea wrote: "Another thought: If we found something like "Secret Service Agent Sarah McGivens," would that count for three points?"

I really don't know. I want to say yes, but then I reread the category and it says "If more than one of the her names (first, middle, and/or last) begin with the chosen letter, it will be worth more points". Secret Service Agent would be a title...so I'm going to have to say it would only be one point for Sarah. :(

No, since it isn't one name, just different names for the same person. It would be 2 points for Sarah Sabola.

Is Sally a nickname or her middle name? It seems like nickname since it is quotes...

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments It would be a nickname, I think.

In that case the "Sally" wouldn't count and that would only be two points. Sorry :(

message 27: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments I understand that. The name was just an example, in case anyone stumbled across a setup like that, so we'd all know how to handle it. Thank you so much, Melanie!

message 28: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Melanie, if I understood the rules right, all books for a round must also be posted within that round's period of reading time, right?

From the first callout's instructions:
"*❀Books must be 150+ pages and started/finished/posted during the round (January 20-February 2)"

message 29: by Sarita (new)

Sarita | 1386 comments Isn't that just for your own book?

I've posted a question about when the back up books should be posted and never got an answer, so we were under the impression that we give the actual team members time to post till the end of that round, and then post the back up books, as long as the read date is within that round.

It was never stipulated when the back up book rule was given when that should be posted by.

message 30: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments I thought it was during the same round period, as I had originally asked about posting back-ups at the last second (but still in the same round period). I thought that had been approved and then the notices given in each thread.

message 31: by Sarita (new)

Sarita | 1386 comments This was the notice for the back up - so I understood it that if a team member was not able to post for that round in that period, then we can post back up books:

If you have a team member that didn't check in or finish a book for a round, someone else on the team may post an extra book to fill in for them.

Preference is for each member to read their own (1) book, but life happens and sometimes someone can't read as expected.

Round 3 | February 17-March 2

Letter: A

Category: Title

The title category must have a word beginning with the chosen letter ANYWHERE in the title. The words "A", "AN", "AND", or "THE" do NOT count towards points.

If more than one of the words in the title begin with the chosen letter, it will be worth more points (1 point for each valid word beginning with the letter).

We will be going off of the title listed on Goodreads and can include the subtitle since that is seen as the full title. If the book's series is included in parenthesis, that won't count since it isn't the title.

For example:

The Truth War: Fighting for Certainty in an Age of Deception - 1 point for the word Age
Anxious for Nothing: God's Cure for the Cares of Your Soul - 1 point for Anxious
At Love's Command - 1 point for At

***We are going off of Goodreads' Title for this challenge. Please link to the book on Goodreads to verify the title. :)

message 35: by Staci (new)

Staci | 1071 comments Melanie, what if the series name is part of the title such as:

Agatha Atherton: Accountant (Adding to the Bottom Line Series)

Would this be three points excluding series name or four points including series name?

message 36: by Melanie, ✞Moderator, Avid Reader, & Blogger ✞ (new)

Melanie (lovebeingvegan) | 9915 comments Mod
Three points, as series in parenthesis are excluded.

I searched the book's ASIN from Amazon and here is the page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

It has the same description and I'm thinking that Amazon just has more added than just the title. They seem to include all the book titles listed inside. If it was listed on Goodreads that way, I'd allow it, but I can't go based on other sites. :(

Round 4 | March 3-16

Letter: W

Category: Author

The author's name must begin with the chosen letter. The author's first, middle, or last name may be used. If the author has more than one name beginning with the chosen letter, it will be worth more points (1 point for each name beginning with the letter).

IF a book has more than one author, you can count all their names that begin with W.

(for example only, let's say the letter would have been "M" then " With This Ring? A Novella Collection of Proposals Gone Awry by Karen Witemeyer With This Ring?: A Novella Collection of Proposals Gone Awry" would have been worth 2 points for Mary Connealy and Melissa Jagears)

Author names MUST be the names found on the book cover/Goodreads. It doesn't matter if someone's middle name is the same letter, if they don't use it professionally.

***We are going off of Goodreads for this challenge. Please link to the book on Goodreads to verify the author(s). :)

message 43: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Melanie, if we read a collection such as the one below, how would that be counted? This book wouldn't count, because the letters are G and M, but for the sake of understanding the scenario... Would you count the author one time for each book in the collection, because he authored all of them -- or only once because it's the same author?
