Dreams of Joy is the sequel to Shanghai Girls. In the first book, we hear the story of May and Pearl, 2 sisters from China. Dreams of Joy focuses mostly on Pearl's daughter, Joy, and their relationship. Joy finds out that her real father is in Shanghai and in 1957, she runs away to China in search of him. Devastated by Joy's fleeing, Pearl is determined to find and save her from the communist ways.
I really enjoyed both of these books. There are parts that are heartbreakingly sad, but then those that warm your heart. I'd love to see a 3rd one that follows the family even more.
