I liked hearing about the history and past directors of the library, the community programs, and the changes in the industry. The story about the fire was interesting. When she described the structure and conditions in the building, it sounded like a fire was almost inevitable. They were never able to accurately determine exactly how or where it started. It had to be devastating, but I loved how the community got involved to help save thousands of the books. I liked most of the book, but I grew very tired of the in-depth analysis of the hapless man who was accused of setting the fire. The interviews with his family members and friends (decades after his death) made me cringe. They all came across as pathetic and ridiculous.

My library book club will be discussing this book this week, and the leader (a librarian) agreed to give a presentation on our own library system. I'm curious about the changes occurring in the system, and what they're doing in the community. I used to visit the central library in the city frequently, but I haven't been downtown in a long time. I know that closing the libraries during covid was particularly hard on homeless people.
