Laurie is back and we talk about book challenges, even one in French! Since she is a biologist, science comes up as a theme in multiple ways.

Jeff Koeppen (jeff_koeppen) | 181 comments Vonnegut and pigeons........how fun! I'm definitely going to look for Pigeon Watching.

My pigeon story: 13 or 14 years ago we had a banded pigeon show up at our house. She was relatively tame, and would just walk around the house and driveway like she was looking for someone. I was able to get the code off her band and contacted a pigeon racing registry outfit who was able to put me in contact with her owner who lived about 50 miles away in the Twin Cities. Apparently she got lost on a cross-country long-distance race, probably caught in a storm or something, and was confused. She couldn't fly that well either. We kept her fed and the owner instructed me to lure her in to a pet carry-crate we had, which took a while but I finally caught her. I arranged to meet the owner about half-way and I was able to return her to him.

A while later I recounted this story to someone familiar with pigeon racing and he said that the owner probably just killed her after I gave her back because an injured or mentally unfit pigeon is worthless to them. He seemed nice. I hope that's not what happened.

Elizabeth☮ | 268 comments That is a crazy story Jeff! Let’s hope that pigeon lived a long life. But birds are sensitive souls and often succumb easily to their injuries.
