This is the thread where you can submit a task idea for the 50 Point Task contest. The thread is now open for submissions and will close at Midnight Eastern time on April 5. Voting will start the next day, April 6 and will close at the end of the day on April 12. If the moderators determine that the vote is close, a 3-day runoff poll will be held. The person whose idea gets the most votes will host the 50 point task for the Spring Challenge.

The 50 point task will require:
1. Only 3 options. These options may not include more than 2 "sub options" - 6 total in the task.
2. One book per option.
3. Three books totaling at least 750 pages. Your task idea may require a higher page threshold but this must be disclosed in your entry.
4. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.
6. No “free choice” options will be allowed. This is a challenge, so tasks that have no element of challenge do not fit the purpose.
7. A task must be accessible to the majority of players, i.e. not limited to a specific format, edition, publisher, etc. and reviewable by the moderators.

Anyone eligible* to design a task may submit an idea for a task that follows the general guidelines above. Your idea should be a sketch that may be developed with the moderators.

* To be eligible to create a task, the player’s profile must be set up to accept Goodreads messages, and they must not have a task in the current challenge. Only one task per person per challenge.

The group will vote to determine the 50 point task. All ideas that fit the general guidelines will be included in a poll. The poll winner will develop their idea with the moderators to refine their task. The final task may differ from the original idea submission. The task will be posted as close to the midpoint as reasonably possible. The task creator will monitor and answer questions in the help thread.

Please include your Readerboard name and a title for your task. The entries will be listed by Readerboard name and task title in the poll. Please include only one task idea entry per post.

PLEASE DO NOT comment on people's entries in this thread - this is for submissions only - you will be able to comment when voting begins. Comments in this thread will be deleted.

Tammy AZ (tammyaz) | 1207 comments Since it's spring and time to start planning, or just dreaming of, summer road trips, take a virtual road trip by reading three books set in three contiguous states that you can roadtrip (drive) through.

If your starting state is California, some trip options are:
California >Oregon>Washington
California> Nevada>Oregon
California>Arizona>New Mexico
California>Arizona>Colorado

Starting in Maine would provide only two options:
Maine>New Hampshire>Vermont
Maine>New Hampshire>Massachusetts

Hawaii and Alaska would not be allowed as it is impossible to road trip to any contiguous states.

Spring has many different holidays and observances. Here are some of the unofficial ones.

This is a 3 book challenge. The total page count for all books must be at least 750 pages. No books with the genres Children, Kids, Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga on the main book page may be used.

Choose one option (either A or B) for each month. All choices may be either fiction or non-fiction as long as they fit the criteria.

March:

A. March 8th is International Women’s Day – read a book by a woman or non-binary author who was born or currently lives in a country other than where you live.
Required: Include in your post what country you currently live in and what country the author is from. If the author's birthplace or location is not in their GR bio, provide a reference with this information.

B. March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day – read a book set at least 50% in Ireland. For the purpose of this task both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are acceptable.
Required: If the setting isn’t obvious from the GR description or metadata, include a reference that establishes the setting.

April:

A. April 1st is April Fools Day – read a book shelved as Trickster or Trickery from one of these lists:https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/... or https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/....
(Not all books on the lists will work. The book must not have MPG Children and must meet all other SRC requirements.)
Required: Include in your post which list you used and what page of the list your book is found on.

B. April 20th is Earth Day – read a book with a nature scene on the cover. This must be outdoors with no man-made objects or structures. People are allowed.
Required: The cover must be included in your post.

May:

A. May 1st is known as International Workers Day or Labor Day in many countries outside the United States – read a book with MPG Labor or Social Justice

B. Mothers Day in the United States is the second Sunday in May – read a book with a mother as the main character. If this is not clear from the book description, provide a reference for the character's status.

I tried to put my Readerboard Name and task title at the top, but it isn't showing up, so adding it here:

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3940 comments MAZZA1's 50 point task - Book Fingerprinting

Because of another challenge where I had to choose a 12 letter spell-it-out and I chose the word DACTOYLOGRAM (an impression of fingerprints) I got to thinking about the fingerprints we leave behind on books and reading devices.

This is a 3 book challenge with a required page count of at least 750 pages. Choose 1 book to fit each of the 3 options

BOOK ONE
Read a book with a word of 3 letters or more in the title (not subtitle) that can be made from the words
FINGERPRINTS OR DACTYLOGRAM (NOT BOTH)
e.g. Fine, Tiger or Print - from the first OR
Day, Card or Lady from the second
letters may only be used as often as they appear in the Words

Identify the word used and the word made from it in your posting

BOOK TWO
Read a book that will have more than just your own fingerprints on it - e.g One someone else has given to you / One you got from a Used Book shop or a library.

Please state how you got this book in your posting

BOOK THREE
Fingerprints were first used in criminal cases 121 years ago and as forensics advanced DNA sequencing 25 years ago
Read a book published less than 121 years ago - but more than 25 years ago - this means Between 1901 and 1997. As both DNA and fingerprints are unique this book should NOT be part of a series

Please state the year of publication in your posting

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3675 comments trishhartuk's idea: Iceland

I was late starting the Spring SRC because I spent a wonderful week in Iceland. It really is a phenomenal place, and so very different to anywhere I’ve been before. Volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls and, of course, hot springs! It felt like we were there for the start of spring, as when we arrived there was a lot of snow on the ground, and by the time we left, much of that was thawed or just had a dusting left. This is a task to remind me of a wonderful trip.

Option 1. The Place. Read a book that is set at least 50% in Iceland (specifically), or was written by an author who was born or lives in one of the following countries: Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden or Finland. If it isn’t obvious from the GR book or author description, please include a link to establish the geographical connection.

Option 2. The Lights. One of the main reasons we went was to try to see the Northern Lights, and we finally achieved it on the last night. We watched them dance for almost fifteen minutes, and they were stunning. Read a book with a word of at least four letters in the title, that can be made up of the letters in EITHER “NORTHERN LIGHTS” OR “AURORA BOREALIS”. You can use words that appear intact, like NORTH or LIGHT, or ones formed from the letters of one choice or the other (but not both!), such as THEN, REAL, ROLE. Required: state which phrase you used.

Option 3. The Land of Ice and Fire. The first two lines of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song sum Iceland up perfectly:

“We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow.”

Adding in the volcanoes, it truly is a land of ice and fire. Read a book with one of the following on the cover: ice, snow, the sun, a waterfall, fire, lava or a volcano. Required: post the cover and point out the relevant object.

TraceyL | 1069 comments TraceyL's 50 Point Task - Bridgerton

Season 2 of the Netflix tv series Bridgerton will premiere on March 25th. Historical romance normally isn't my thing, but I've found watching the series to be a refreshing way to escape the chaos of the past two years. It's witty, and is filled with beautiful costumes, set designs, and of course, scandals. This task is inspired by the show.

This is a 3 book challenge. The total page count for all books must be at least 750 pages. No books with the genres Children, Kids, Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga on the main book page may be used.

Book 1: Bridgerton is set in England during the Regency era, in the early 1800's. While some of the characters are based on real people, it's an idealized version of the time period, with modern sensibilities woven into the story.

Read a book with the main page genre of Historical Fiction.

Book 2: The tv show is based on the Bridgertons series of books by Julia Quinn. There are 8 primary books in the series, with each book featuring one of the 8 Bridgerton siblings falling in love. The tv show is expected to run for 8 seasons, with each season representing one of the books.

Read a book that is part of a series with at least 8 primary works.

Book 3: One thing the Bridgerton tv show is known for is it's diverse cast. In season one, Daphne Bridgerton's love interest Simon Basset was portrayed by a Black actor. In season two, Anthony Bridgerton's love interest Kate Sheffield has been changed to Kate Sharma, who is of Indian decent.

Read a book found on the Diverse Authors Books shelf.

Pick your favorite book from last year (2021). Look it up on Goodreads and scroll to More lists with this book…and choose a list that this book is on from the first page of lists. Click on the list you choose and pick a book from that list (within the first 10 pages) and read a book from that list. Then go to that books lists and repeat the process to get your second book. Use your second book in the same manner to get your last book.

This was very confusing for me to write out, so I will give an example.

Example: My favorite book last year was The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. I chose the list Best Book Of the Decades:2020’s and chose to read The House in the Cerulean Sea by T. J. Klune for my first book. I then went to the more lists for this book and chose the list Loving LGBTQIA+ Relationship list to pick my second book to read and choose Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo from this list. I then went to the more lists with this book and choose TIME’s 100 Must-Read Books of 2019 list to pick my third and final book and choose On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong.
