Worth the read?

Just wondering if Dune is worth the read or is watching the film enough? I am new to Goodreads and would love to make some friends and get some new recommendations!! feel free to add me as friend!

I would say that watching the film is a great experience, but it’s unable to touch on most of the interesting themes of the book simply because it’s a film. It was a great adaptation, but there’s a lot of inner dialogue and discussion that couldn’t happen in a film without being kinda boring to watch. Watching the film first might make it easier to start the book as well, given that for the most part you as the reader are thrown in at the deep end with many words and concepts left unexplained, either until later or not at all. If you do struggle to begin with there is a whole dune wiki to look up words and references which make reading the first couple of chapters a lot easier

The first Dune is a classic, it's not a book, it's a whole philosophy. I strongly advise reading it simply because, until very recently, no one was able to turn it into a good movie. Just to say how much of a complicated book it is. The last movie did great in my opinion reproducing the main themes but the book holds much secrets that you'll discover only by reading. Enjoy ;-)

So worth it, if you like sci-fi this a must read.

For any sci-fi fan, this is a must read. Yes, VERY worth it.

not my cup of tea. i cant really imagine the action sequences and fighting scenes maybe.

Did you read it?

Just read it for the second time and liked it even better than the first. Read again because I plan on reading the second book, and glad I did because I forgot a lot, and I picked up more of the philosophy, quotes, nuance, etc. Just the saw the second movie, which is the second half of the first book. The movie is good but - reiterating comments about the first movie - it by necessity still leaves a lot out. I think most people could see the movie before reading the book and still enjoy the book.

Women are more than fairly represented, even moreso than their male counterparts. The superior and lasting characters after all who use logic and reason rather than resorting to violence in order to create better worlds.

Totally! Dune is so nuanced and the film fails to capture a lot of the important themes (as they usually do). I recommend looking into the background of the book like what inspired Herbert such as the Middle Eastern influences so it makes more sense...

It is a dense book if you are new to science fiction but it is worth every second you spend in that world. It's a classic in the genre and very influential.
FYI the movie(s) and mini-series are great as well!

You may have already read it by now. I read it 3 times and loved it every time so it's a big "Yeeees!" from me. As mentioned above, the movie is a great cinematic experience. I felt they did a good job telling a story. However, I felt it lacked depth on most of the characters other than the main character, which is only natural in a movie.

The movie is not enough. I watched it after reading the book. It is a great movie, but it would require about 10-15 hours to cover everything in the book. Denis Villeneuve brought the world of Arrakis to life and it was visually stunning and a great supplement to the book.

For me this is the best book of the trilogy.
Really Worth it!
It really takes you to de Arrakis and Herbert's Universe.
The vast of the culture of DUNE, Atreides secret codes and explaining all the thing that in the movie have being untold!
Deep in to the sand, the hallucinations and the spice!
Even Jodorowski tried to bring this book to the big screen, but failed due to budget issues, it was to expensive! But the universe of this great book was very well designed by him!
Try to read the book before seeing the film, you will like the film much more.
Good luck

It is really worth it. One of the best book I read this year so far.
* Sorry for mistakes, English is not my first language*
It's a whole new world to discover with deep themes. The movie doesn't cover everything. I read it after watching the movie and the book is incredible.

Definitely worth the read. At first I am having a hard time understanding the first 2 chapters so I have to read them again, then I was able to understand most of it. What I did while reading the book was that every time I encounter a word or term that is invented by the author for the book, I would search the word on the glossary of the book which is found on the back of every Dune novel, in this way I wouldn't be alienated by terms I don't understand.

So worth it!

It’s worth it!
