Hi everyone!

Welcome to team Cassandra, famous seer of Troy.

I'm Sophie, your captain for the next three months of being inspired by the Muses! I've been a member of NBRC for 10 years and am one of the current mods. When I'm not doing that, I'm mum to 2 small children and a GP (family medicine doctor), living in the UK a bit south of London. Round all of that I find some time to read.

I read almost everything apart from horror. I was very happy recently when my best friend dedicated a book to me (Reunited with His Long-Lost Cinderella if any of you are historical romance fans)

My least favourite book recently was The Only Good Indians - one of my rare DNF.

Please introduce yourselves with as much or little detail as you want, your shelf and books you like/your least favourite.

message 17: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Hello, everyone! This is co-captain Steven, long time Tower Teams veteran!

I live in North Carolina in the US of A, with my hubby and three fur kids.

I read pretty much everything. I’m less inclined to read contemporary book club fiction, historical fiction, or historical romance. I lean mostly towards mystery, thriller, horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and urban fantasy. And MM romance when I need something fluffy and sexy.

I also mostly read series because once I’m invested I need as much as I can of those worlds/characters. It’s damn near impossible for me to pick a favorite series, but I’d probably say Stormlight Archive by Brandson Sanderson.

Currently, I’m officially unemployed as of this past Tuesday. Had some issues at work that involves being highly unappreciated, so left. My field and education/experience are in accounting/finance, but books are my passion.

If we aren’t friends on here yet, make sure to add me!

3 fur babies now! Dogs or cats?

Steven is good for recommendations (or at least has been for me in the past), but be prepared for series that last at least 10 books. Or have enough pages that they might as well - Sanderson is not a short book writer.

Bleurgh, not worth staying somewhere that makes you miserable if you have any choice. Hope you are feeling ok about the decision.

message 19: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments Hi all, good to see Cassandra is ahead of the game.

I'm Alison. I live in Scotland/UK with a small black asthmatic cat. I'm an accountant but currently working in a financial forecasting job which has definitely been interesting over the last couple of years.

It is however mostly a way to fund my book buying habit. I can't resist a sprayed edge or special edition. I'll read pretty much any fiction book and am very much a mood reader. I do tend to lean towards contemporary, rom com and crime/thriller but am not averse to fantasy or sci fi.

Really excited to get started, I think I've been doing team challenges here or over on Perks for the last 8 or 9 years but not sure I've ever done Tower Teams.

message 20: by Navi (new)

Navi (nvsahota) | 730 comments Hi everyone! 👋🏽

I’m Navi. I live in British Columbia, Canada with my husband. Reading is my obsession and I will voraciously inhale any genre I can get my hands on. My reading preferences are always changing but my recent favourite genres have been horror, science fiction, fantasy and nonfiction. I have a bunch of long fantasy series ready to go on my kindle for Towers. Good thing I’m in the mood for reading chunky books!

Excited to get started and looking forward to chatting books with you all☺️

Send all your epic fantasy recommendations my way!

So sorry to hear about your work situation but I am glad you are aware of your value. It's so easy to stay at a job you are not enjoying because it is convenient. I hope your next position brings you personal fulfillment!

message 23: by Navi (new)

Navi (nvsahota) | 730 comments I took a look at the rules:

“Re-reads" will be allowed, if it has been six months since you have read the book. This includes listening to the audio version, if you've already read the book.

Yay!

Yeah, we had 5, but we lost Daphne in 2020 and Kalli in February of this year.

Hey, I can recommend short series and standalones too! LOL

Definitely feeling good about my decision. I stayed there undervalued for too long. Now it's time for new adventure (with a nice break in between).

We will be in London the 15th through the 21st, Sophie, so if you have any food recommendations, let me know!!!! (I'll also be reading but not able to do a ton of captaining that week.)

Nice to meet you, Alison. I think you'll enjoy Tower Teams. It's my favorite, though I really enjoyed 2020's My Restaurant Rocks too. :D

I've met some wonderful people through Towers. I don't know if you know Sonia (former NBRC mod and still active participant) but her and I bonded in Tower Teams 1 and I talk to her almost every day, which is so cool because we live on different sides of the Atlantic and would never have met otherwise!

message 27: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (pilaryk2) | 182 comments Hello everyone!

I'm Andrea, I am from Bogota, Colombia. I am a Chemical Engineer and work in a small process design and equipment manufacturing company. My work involves both desk activities and on site installations, It is quite interesting though a bit stressful sometimes (like most jobs I guess)

I like reading and baking, they help me relax and forget a bit about RL. I read a bit of everything but the main genres I like are Fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction and some books related to science. I mostly read in English though from time to time I read books in Spanish.

I am a big Sanderson fan, I love re-reading his books and I am always recommending his novellas to friends, to see if they get interested.

This is the second TT I will be participating in. Last year I started playing UNO and got addicted to team challenges. I get to find new books and push myself to read a lot. Also, I get to meet fellow readers! It is always great to meet people who enjoy stories.

I look forward to playing alongside all of you!

message 28: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments hi, i'm devann and i'm in the midwest, usa. i've participated in several tower teams and mostly read fantasy and horror although i'm generally open to anything except romance and contemporary/literary fiction.

unfortunately for my reading 'productivity' i feel like i've barely read anything except our flag means death fanfiction for the past month and a half so i'll have to get my brain back in real book mode before the start of the challenge but luckily i've got a few weeks to make that happen lol

message 29: by Elli (last edited May 01, 2022 10:07PM) (new)

Elli | 241 comments Hi everybody~ I'm Elli from Singapore.

This is my first time participating in Tower Teams. I do solo challenges usually but started participating in more team challenges this year. The Uno challenge just ended and it made me all geared up for more! φ(゜▽゜*)♪

My favorite genres are fantasy and sci-fi, read mostly fiction and the occasional non-fiction.

The only Sanderson book I've read is The Emperor's Soul and it is really good! Maybe I'll finally start on the Stormlight Archive series this year but I have a bunch of books lined up to read first.. I have a TBR mountain waiting and it's growing faster than I can read.

Work as funding a book buying habit... doesn’t sound familiar at all. Definitely not an issue in my house. Thank goodness for libraries and subscriptions for keeping the costs down!

Steven - I'm sorry, losing fur babies sucks. Have they got somewhere nice to stay while you are away?

Through a combination of small children and pandemic, I'm completely useless when it comes to food recommendations in London. Maybe not completely actually, Tayyab's (https://www.tayyabs.co.uk/) is great - but if you want alcohol you take your own.

I took a 2 month break in the autumn and the time off was fantastic. I hope it leaves you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world.

Looks like we've got a solid core of Sanderson reads here! *eyes up the page counts approvingly * I haven’t read any of his for a long time, but a couple of rereads then moving on with the series might be in order. Did any of you hear about his recent kickstarter?

Andrea and Elli - team challenges are like that! Once you've started it is impossible to escape. I started with TT 2 just after I joined gr and that was it for me.

Devann - I'm sure it will come with time!

In case any of you are interested, the first BOM that counts for bonus points is The Travelling Cat Chronicles. A link to the discussion is here. We get 40 bonus points if one of our team writes the DQs (daily questions) and 20 for everyone who reads the book.

message 33: by Elli (new)

Elli | 241 comments This book is one of my all-time favorite & I'm still having an internal debate if I want to do a re-read.

Highly recommended for even the stone-hearted.

message 34: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments Oh, I loved The Travelling Cat Chronicles. I've gifted that book to many, many people. Not sure I could read it again though.

message 35: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments @Steven Eni and Sammy were the captain and co captain of my team for last year's Wheel so Sonia was a regular visitor to the thread. It's so great that you became such good friends thru TT.

I'm pretty sure I have done Tower Teams before but it's been a few years. I'd stepped back from team challenges as I was struggling to read pretty much anything. I seem to be regaining my reading mojo although I have still been struggling a little with sci fi and fantasy so I'm open to any recommendations.

message 36: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5684 comments Mod
Glad to hear the recommendations! I've signed up so hopefully I'll enjoy it as much as you did.

Thread jumping is a lovely thing to do to see old friends. Sammy and Sonia are together in team Hector so it's an entertaining thread to visit.

No pressure here if reading mojo isn't 100%! I'm wanting everyone to enjoy themselves rather than get stressed!

Audrey Jane | 1815 comments Hello fellow Cassandrians! I'm Audrey, a Belgian living in France. I work for a law firm (assisting two Partners). I loyally serve two cats at home and will welcome a puppy within three weeks. I'm over the moon. The more fluff, the merrier!

Quickly checked the archives and this will be my 5th TT. Have participated on and off when real life permits. I'm not a speed reader but always try to make up for it with page count/BOM participations :)
I read pretty much anything however I do have 'literary pet peeves' which are more prevalent in certain genres. I'm Dutch/French speaking and occassionally read in those languages, especially non-fiction/history books. I take special interest in medical history books and history of the common folk/daily life (studied history at uni).

I was on Alison's team last Wheels and currently in a team with Keri in another group.
Looking forward to get to know you all and talk books ! I predict we'll have lots of fun but of course no one will believe us...again ;)

message 40: by Audrey Jane (new)

Although we also have two mods on our team, so, it appears no mischief nor shennanigans this time

I even managed to type that with a straight face!!!!

Cat did most of the team shuffling so she is responsible for the possible reduction in chaos... backs away from Hector before there is an explosion.
