Looking for examples of memorable sub commanders. Who comes to mind? Either book or film. The "quirkier" the better.

I've already got all these:
Sean Connery - 'The Hunt for Red October'
Cary Grant - 'Destination: Tokyo!'
Cary Grant - 'Operation Petticoat'
Clark Gable - 'Run Silent, Run Deep'
Alan Arkin - 'The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming'
Charlton Heston - 'Gray Lady Down'
Jugen Prochnow - 'Das Boot'
Curt Jurgens - 'The Enemy Below'
Eric Blore - 'The Bedford Incident'
Peter Cushing - 'The Land That Time Forgot'
James Mason - 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea'
Rock Hudson - 'Ice Station Zebra'
Richard Basehart - 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea'
Gregory Peck - 'On the Beach'

Otto Kretschmer, Captain of the U-99 during WW2. Was the 'Ace of Aces' of German submariners. His story is told in The Golden Horseshoe: The Wartime Career of Otto Kretschmer, U-Boat Ace.

ah, good one. He enjoyed the 'happy times' early in the war, eh? Before the British radar clobbered 'em.

Anyway, thanks! This is useful.

The photograph on the man's Wikipedia page, apparently shows a warrior who enjoys his work to the fullest.
