We learn that Pandora’s clumsiness is tied to a physical ailment. Had you suspected as much? How surprised were you, if at all, that she’d sustained an injury at her father’s hands? Why do you suppose her own mother didn’t insist on medical treatment?

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I didn't think her clumsiness was related to a physical handicap in the beginning. I thought that Pandora was one of those people who moved too fast and stumbled a lot. When she told what her father did, I was horrified. She was punished violently for being a kid.

Her mother didn't care about her children. They weren't a family that considered children, especially female children, very important.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments At first I thought she was ADD and needed the constant motion and with that came her accidents. I started to suspect something to do with her inner ear when she would get disoriented in the dark and couldn't dance. I was shocked to find her father had injured her and they never sought treatment for her. In addition to not caring for her children, the abuse would have come to the doctor's attention.

I didn’t suspect Pandora’s clumsiness was medical either. Kudos to Kleypas for her subtlety as Pandora worked hard to cover up her deafness.

Their parents were just awful people. How could a father hit his child so hard that her eardrum is ruptured! That punch would have been tough for an adult. She’s bleeding and they don’t even bother getting her medical treatment. I’m kind of glad they ignored the girls, otherwise they may have turned out like their brother.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments It did not cross my mind that Pandora's clumsiness was caused by an old injury. She seemed very good at covering up her hearing loss. I don't remember it being mentioned in the previous books.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 909 comments I didn't suspect it was due to an injury either. She did a really good job of covering it up. How unbelievable first of all that her father would do that but why wouldn't her mother get her medical care. How awful for a child to get through that.
