Please provide your answers to as many or as few of the questions as you’d like in the comments below. Feel free to ask more questions if you’d like.

-
1. This book includes some content that may be triggering to some readers. Were you able to read past it or did it hinder your experience?

2. What did you think of the magic system in this book? Was it original, clever, typical, confusing, etc.?

3. Who was your favorite or least favorite character; who did you love or who did you love to hate?

Feel free to also share your reviews and or thoughts on the book in your comments.

Toi Thomas (toithomas) | 213 comments I haven’t posted my review yet, but I did enjoy the book.

1. I was able to read past it, but it was difficult at times. Still, overall, it served a purpose even if I felt it was never really addressed by the characters. I wish it had been.

2. I like the concept of this magic system and feel more will be revealed in the rest of the series. I felt it was a clever twist on some more traditional magical systems I’ve read.

3. I really liked the healing Guardian and really didn’t like the captain. I’d like to say more, but it may give away spoilers.

Juneta Key | 82 comments I absolutely loved this series. This is the first book in the series and I read it in one sitting, also book 2 and 3 of the series. I cannot wait for more from this author. Love the world the adventure. This is not a modern world but a magical world on the high seas.

Here is my review.

Thanks for joining the discussion and sharing your thoughts. I too enjoyed the book and look forward to the rest, which I already have.

Jemi Fraser | 8 comments It's been a while since I read this series - loved it! I did struggle with one difficult scene but I was able to read past it. And it was so worth it. Loved the world-building and magic system. Unique and fascinating!

Tyrean | 21 comments I read this series a while ago.

1. I had a really tough time with the hard content, but there is a reason and purpose for it in the series. I think we need to tackle the tough stuff in fiction now and then, and this series does that in the midst of an action-packed, intriguing fantasy world. The main character has a growth arc in this book, and her growth becomes phenomenal in the next books.

2. I loved the magic system!

3. Hated the captain, but there was definitely a reason for that.

Elle Cardy | 1 comments Author's note:
In reference to the scene that's been mentioned here: A while ago, I did change that scene and softened it. While the main character experiences abuse, the story isn't about that. It's more about forgiveness. If you have an older version of the ebook, I believe you can get it updated.
