There are a few things in this book I really liked, but most if it I did not at all and was more 1 star. It's dry, very academic and, to be fair, on things I had zero desire to study in university. It's not that I've never liked a book by her, but she tends to be a polarizing author, and I am not on the fan side of that. I have read 9 books by her (some required reading in university) but thought I'd give this a try since it wasn't a novel. After all, I was enjoying Stephen King's book On Writing and I don't read horror so don't read him at all (I think one of the Green Mile installments was it.) One day I ended up reading about King's book Misery in both books, which was rather interesting, and completely unexpected.

So, as to this book, I did appreciate the section where she discussed Canadian literature and brought up a number of Canadian literary authors who preceded her. I can't tell you how many times I've read comments that she really started literary writing in Canada and I think she would be among the first to refute that.

Some of the essays I disliked not even because they were dry, but I didn't care for the topics
