HOW THIS WORKS

Read a book.
- Look out for food words.
- If you can reasonably record all of them, that’s great. If not, don’t sweat it. Just note like 5-10 food words with page # and try to include the high point ones (vinegar, chicken, rice, spices, desserts, drinks). See below for limitations.
- Primary Concern is filling out the Books Spreadsheet. We don't need everyone to do make the meals and serve the customers.

Enter the book into the Books Read sheet.
- Rule of thumb for the whole spreadsheet: if the column’s colored green, you don’t need to fill it yourself, the formulas will take care of it.
- Don’t enter duplicate book names. The formulas get angry. If you read a book someone else has read, just add your name to the end of it (like Harry Potter Mahi).
- Col H: A book can be used to get scavenger words OR spell it out letters. We can’t mix and match. If there were not a lot of food words, you can select spell it out or if it was nonfiction with little spell it out potential you can select scavenger. But it’s up to you and we can change it later if needed.
- Col I: potential spell it out letters - first letter of title, author first/last name, character names, audiobook narrator, translator
- Col I: potential scavenger words - Col M tells you which meal categories can be made with this book based on page length (50 pgs < fresh < 160 pgs < fresh or frozen < 500 pgs < any). So don’t bother scavenging food words outside of that (ex: desserts and drinks other than coffee/tea if you’re not reading a 500+ word book)

Make meals in the Kitchen sheet.
- We get a certain number of scavenger words or spelling letters per book based on page length: 50 pgs < 2 < 160 pgs < 4 < 300 pgs < 8 < 500 pgs < 12. You can see how many we have for a book at Col J. More importantly you can see how many we have LEFT in Col L.
- You can combine these words/letters to make a meal. See the Meal Info sheet for what each meal requires.
- Example: Circe contains fish and salt. Six of Crows contains potato and lemon. This can make Fish and Chips!
- Example 2: Six of Crows (S), has a character named Inej (I). Frankenstein (F) has a character named Henry (H). We can spell FISH and make Fish and Chips!
- Put this info in the Kitchen sheet - each word/letter is a row. Add justification for each word (just the page/chapter/% it’s from) or letter (title/character/author, etc). IF you have all ingredients for the meal, put “yes” in Col L next to the meal number.
- We need to make some of every meal because when we get customers later each type only eats some kinds of meals.
- Write meal descriptions in the Shop Front sheet. This seems to be just for fun and doesn’t have points attached, for now.

I've never played this before so I'm not 100% sure what is needed or not. I'm not purposely trying to take over as "team captain" or whatever, so feel free to tell me to butt out. :) Or tell me that I'm wrong. I can take direction, I promise.

I have access to the gDoc and created a copy (listed above) so that we can plan before adding books to the official sheet. You can either request access or send me your email and I can give you edit access to the planning sheet. It is a slightly modified copy of the Official sheet to help up add all of the books we read since I'm pretty sure we will be over the 80-book limit. We can review them before adding them to the official sheet.

Hi all! I'm Steph. I'm a SAHM and I babysit. I read strictly romance, mostly of the MM variety. I will read MF if needed for challenges though.

This is my first time playing this challenge. I didn't even know about this group until Lisa messaged me. But with my current challenge getting ready to end I needed a new one. So thank you for inviting me to play.

I watched the video and think I understand the basic concept on what we're to do. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions once we start.

I was going to message you about a separate spreadsheet, Lisa. So I'm fully on board with that :) I'm awful with spreadsheets as you and Susan know from Amazing Race. But, once I figure out what I'm supposed to be doing I should be okay.

Hello everyone. I'm Lisa. I love Goodreads challenges as they help me figure out what to read next. I am usually in at least one team challenge at all times it seems like. I am finishing up Hunt in Sept, starting Bingo (both regular and speedy) and now starting this one too. I think I might be crazy.

I've read the material and I think I get it. I'm going to spend more time today reviewing.

I've been on a team with Steph, Susan and Hayley before. I've seen April's name, but not sure which one since I do so many. I've never seen Vian's name before, but looking forward to getting to know everyone.

As I have said in the past, when I'm in team challenges, I don't play to win, I play to have fun and not be last. That is really the only goal. Hope that theory is ok. Playing to win usually adds too much stress in my life.

Hello! I'm Susan. I am also at SAHM mom...but at what point do I just say I'm not employed? My youngest son is a senior in HS this year, next son is in college and my oldest is home from college and starting a real job -- middle school teacher. I have a lot of free time for reading.

I do a mix of books and audiobooks. Right now, I am all over the place -- MM and MF romance, thrillers, murder mysteries. I like to think I am not picky....but I totally am, I just like a lot of genres so that makes it easier. I draw the line at memoirs/biographies/autobiographies and politics. I try to avoid BDSM and anything having to do with religion.

I am very happy to not captain and appreciate Lisa's willingness to be the organizer. This challenge is also new me. I'm okay with spreadsheets and if I can't figure it out, I can usually find someone who can teach it to me.

Not sure if timing matters much in this challenge -- my time zone is EDT

Ha. I knew it. I knew I recognized your name. Welcome. Susan found a great post from another team. I "borrowed" it and posted in Msg 6.

I don't understand the min/max so I asked in the QA.

Honestly, I don't understand most of it. In one example they spell out Chips and in another they spell out fish...how do you decide what to spell out? Seems like going for the shorter word makes more sense.

Salads have a minimum of 5 and maximum of 15 items.

So...if I find the word cucumber...that's it, we've made a salad? In the example they spell out carrot, why not spell peas? It's two letters shorter. Maybe they just didn't have the letters for it?
And, are these lists complete? it says e.g. which to me means if I find something else that works for salad, that's fine...like say onion or avocado. Or what about the word dressing, but out of context? Would that work?

Also, I noticed this
RESTAURANT NAME
At the start of the challenge, name your restaurant and give a (max. 5 sentence) blurb “about” the restaurant. This may just give you an advantage for round 2….

I think the min/Max is related to the items. If we are going to use food items to build a salad, we need 7 items at a minimum and 10 maximum. OR we can spell SALAD. We get points for each item used.

So, if we make a salad with 7 items we get 14 points. If we spell SALAD we get 10 points.

I think someone asked about context and not sure it's been answered yet. I'm assuming it will need to be in context.

Hello all. I'm Hayley, i've been in challenges with most of you before. I'm an RN who loves to travel and go on little vacations here and there. My last big vacation is Sept 5-15 when i'm taking the ex husbands new family to Disney World. (not the ex husband though) LOL odd I know but we all get along and since none of our children are going to have kids, their kids are like my grandkids. I thank him all the time for having babies for me to play with. I read mostly MM, Scifi, fantasy, PNR, and Urban Fantasy. I have also been known to pick up a book to read based on the cover or title. I think i have the general gist of the game, I played in one similar to this in another challenge. I like to play for fun.

For clarification, if we use a book for spell we can't also use it for scavenger?

I don't know if anyone else needed to know about rereads but they're allowed. As long as it's been 6 months or more since the last time you read a book.

And for audiobooks since there aren't page numbers noting the chapter is fine.

Yep! That's me. I'm hoping i can use books for both challenges and the scavenger hunt until it ends.

I'm so excited to get started and see how this goes.

In our planning sheet, I think I'd like to see a place where I can record all of the relevant letters and all of the food items found.

I know I won't remember it after the fact so I need to note it somewhere.

I'd like to avoid typing into my own spreadsheet, then a team planner, then the official sheet.

Is this already in the sheet somewhere and I'm just missing it?

The Round 1 Books Tab has a place for these items. Columns L thru AD. I can add more or make them bigger if we need to.

Like the official sheet, the green columns are calculated.

I'm a professional Stage Manager in Atlanta, Ga. I just closed a show (today! ) so this challenge is coming at the perfect time.

I read a lot of horror, paranormal, true crime, mystery/thrillers, and the such, both audio and physical books. This is my second time doing this challenge and it's a lot of fun once you get in the habit of looking for food in books.

I'm also down for not being last.

Awesome that you have played before. I THINK you might be the only player who has played this one before. Most of us play Hunt for another group so we are used to looking for things in books.

I went back and found some questions/answers from the last challenge.

Yes it can, as long as you follow the page count:

up to 2 scavenger words / spell-it out letters per book >50 pages and <=160 pages
up to 4 scavenger words/ spell-it out letters per book >161 and <=300 pages
up to 8 scavenger words/ spell-it out letters per book >301 pages and <=500 pages
up to 12 scavenger words / spell-it-out letters per book >501 pages

So if your book is 200 pages, it gets 4 scavenger words or 4 spell-it out letters.

For example, let's say I'm reading a 200 page book called "Everyone's Okay". It has characters in it named George, Gerald, and Susie. I could then spell out "eggs"

E - Everyone's Okay
G - George
G - Gerald
S - Susie

Eggs is an ingredient in Quiche. The requirements for Quiche is 160+ pages and a minimum of 4 words. So my book and spell-it-out meets both requirements. I can add Quiche as a meal to the menu.

Alternatively, say my 200 page book "Everyone's Okay" only as a character named George it in. Another person's 200 page book has characters "Gerald" and "Susie" in it. Then we could put those 2 books together to spell out "eggs" and complete a quiche meal.

What edition do we use for page count?

If we listen to an audiobook, what edition do we use?

What is the rule for re-reads?

For other challenges in this group it has been the first english Kindle Edition Page Count. And that is used for Audio too. Re-reads ok over 6 months.

Most books that long don't hold my attention long enough.

I'm trying to find my last Hunt book for Sept and I'm having a hard time. Omega MC. I'm trying to find more than 70 points. Its hard.

I'm still not quite sure how all of this works.

Vian -- Quiche has a minimum of 6, not 4. I did read that there were a few changes since last year, so I think maybe you have the old info.



Sandwich -- has a minimum of 7 and a max of 10. I read a 310 page book. If I find 7 words of things that are used in a sandwich, I can make a sandwich. Is that correct?

OR If my spellout letters make a 7 or 8 letter word that is a sandwich item - -for example, if I can spell lettuce , then I have made a sandwich. Is this also correct?


I do understand that I don't have to do this on my own...I might find 4 sandwich items which get combined with Vian's items. Or I might use 2 letters to finish a spellout started by Hayley and the other 6 letters start a new word word.

Can the Monthly Special: Fijian Chicken Curry be made with scavenger words or spell-it-outs, or only scavenger?

If we can do spell-it-out, how do we differentiate it from regular Curry?

Answer:
You can do either. If spelling it out just keep in mind the ingredients - so it is a chicken curry with spices. For example
Spelling out “curry” would be the normal curry whereas “Fijian” would work for this curry or you could spell out a spice associated with a Fijian curry. Don’t overthink it too much, and be imaginative

LOL. I have never cooked curry, eaten curry...I have probably seen curry as it seems unlikely that I haven't but I don't actually know what curry is. And I definitely don't know what a Fijian curry is or what spices are Fijian. My best guess would be some sort of stew. I suppose I could look it up, but I can't say I'm very interested in curry recipes. If anyone knows any additional words I should look for or try to spell out, please post them.

I’ve also never eaten or cooked a curry of any kind. I googled Fijian curry and got a list of ingredients. Since I’m unfamiliar with the dish I’m unsure how accurate it is.

I would say yes as it’s the same thing just the American word.
