Cycle of the Werewolf is a horror novella/short story collection (?) originally published in hardcover in 1983 as a limited release, and then again in 1985 as a mass market paperback for the general public. Each chapter in itself is a sort of short story and it includes illustrations by artist Bernie Wrightson. The overarching story takes place in Tarker's Mills, Maine where a werewolf has been terrorizing the town and the protagonist is 10 year old wheelchair bound Marty Coslaw. Each chapter coincides with a new month of the year and the happenings on in the town and with Marty and his family.
The story idea started out as a calendar by Zavista with illustrations by renowned comic-book artist Bernie Wrightson. Each month featured a drawing by Wrightson complete with a short vignette by King. King found the size of the vignettes, which were both small and extremely limited, to be a problem. King proceeded with a short novel and had it published by Land of Enchantment in 1983, complete with Wrightson's illustrations.
A movie was adapted in 1985 titled "Silver Bullet" starring Corey Haim, Gary Busey, Everett McGill, Megan Follows, Terry O'Quinn, and others. Originally it received mixed reviews but has since achieved cult status because of how much it was run on late night tv over the years. As far as I'm aware it's currently available to view on Amazon Prime, AMC+, and Vudu.
I am SO excited to finally be able to check this off of my Stephen King bucket list. What better time of year to read a werewolf story than October? And growing up as a huge Corey Haim fan it's a shame I've never watched the movie so I plan to rectify that asap. Who else is excited to read Cycle of the Werewolf this month? Are you also planning on checking out the movie? I hope everyone has a fun and spooky Autumn!
