This series Escape from Furnace started out so strong with Lockdown. It was a great first book that could make it up there with the dystopian books of the early 2000s. However, it kept falling with each book that was added to the series because each book was more and more drawn out making them feel significantly slower paced than book one.

The creativity with the different creatures was very cool. They were hard to keep apart at first because one turned into another or they were brought out at the same time. All of this becomes very clear after the second book because it is really important to the plot.

There are quite a few unanswered questions that go unresolved which is a little upsetting and I can’t think of a reason why they weren’t explained. The one that bothered me the most was the question of why weren’t there any girls in Furnace. I have my theories, but none of them can be confirmed with any part of any book.

There were also some technical issues that I had issues with especially in the second book Solitary. There were just things I couldn’t get past and I think this might be because of the author’s lack of planning out the plot. He just starts writing and lets the book take him where it takes him. That's great that he found the writing style that works best for him. I just think in doing this, he gets stuck in situations that have plot holes, loose ends, and makes it hard to have a fast paced plot with a distinct goal in the end.

The series didn’t end in a huge bang of excitement with the book Execution which I was sad about but also kind of expected because of which way the series was turning. I think it might’ve been a stronger series if it was plotted out (to get rid of the technical issues) and condensed to about two or three books (to keep the series from dragging out).
