How good are you at picking books to read next year?

List 12 books, one book a month, that you want to read in 2023.

Add up to 4 extra books as back up or replacement books.

All books must be chosen before January 1, 2023, and no changes to lists can be made after that time.

All books must be read starting In 2023.

You may switch out one of your books from any of your back up books.

Challenge yourself to read all of them, even your back ups!

Feel free to start a thread here to track your progress!

yes, I can feel some excitement in amongst my panic at not having finished this year's yet... LOL

message 4: by Denise (new)

Denise (drams5) | 323 comments I haven't finished this year's yet. 🤦 I enjoy the interaction of the challenges, but I love browsing the library for a totally new read...or finding the perfect book to suit my mood. So sometimes I'm pretty bad at the challenges. I will make the list though!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 800 comments Ooh, I have made a start, but not my usual start, seeing as in my head it's still October!

If you go to the main page of the thread on the top right side, there should be words to the effect, 'new topic' . If you click on that, it should open up a page for you to use.

I hope that helps.

I keep getting an error message and tells me to try again later. I will try it again

That's good news.

message 12: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 1103 comments I have created 16 lists of 16 books. I will wait until the end of December to decide on my choice(s). I know in my heart of hearts that I will never be able to read the 256 books that I have listed, so it will be a decision based on my mood after Christmas. It was exciting to create the lists when I should have been actually reading!!! I know I must be crazy, but I also know that you, my reading friends, all can understand.

EVERYTHING counts! If it has a beginning, middle and end; it counts. Don't let anyone else tell you differently.

I get it Jackie!!

Lance (sportsbookguy) | 398 comments My biggest issue with this challenge is that I will not know in December what I will be reading by April, let alone later in the year. Mainly because those darn authors and publishers keep sending me awesome ARCs for me to review on my blog and for some strange reason, I tend to read them before my older titles.

Maybe not do the 12+4; and only the individual list?? Ioana has always only done one list. Its a thought

Lauri (otwlauri) | 81 comments I’m really bad at this! I LOVE the planning part, but I’m so weak at the execution of it all…
I get lost on GR, at the library, on Pinterest…. I’m so much of a mood reader or focused on books for a big group challenge, that I neglect my carefully planned end-of-the-year plan. But I shall persevere!

I have "bright shiny object syndrome" where books are concerned too, Lance.

Me too. I love that you've named it for me. 😂

On the moderators thread, we joke about "The Five Stages of the OTSP Annual Challenge."

They are:
1) Excitement,
2) Early progress,
3) Inattention,
4) Berating myself for not putting all audio books on my list, and
5) Panic.

message 23: by Denise (new)

Denise (drams5) | 323 comments Stage 4 is so real. Every. Year.

message 24: by Jennifer, Moderator (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) | 1812 comments Mod
Yep, and it is like stage five: the transition to it isn't gradual. You look at the calendar one day around October, and in a split second you leave the warm happy confines of stage 3 and segue into the bitterness and lonely drinking of stage 4. Stage five is the same way, except it happens the last week of November and you switch from booze to sugar (because of the holiday baking).

How good am I at this? Horrible! I’ll never know this early in the year. Will pass this year instead of putting up a list I won’t stick with

LOL Lance, that sounds like personal growth to me!

message 27: by Kristine (new)

Kristine | 405 comments Jennifer, try not to panic 😱 I love writing the list, but then jump all over with new books I want to read. It probably is good, it forces me to stick to all the books taking over my house and maybe 🤔 read some. It’s for Fun, remember no prizes are coming, so just get in what you can

message 28: by Jennifer, Moderator (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) | 1812 comments Mod
LOL Kristine! This year my goal is to finish my annual challenges no later than the end of November, and then in December read whatever the heck I want!
