Louise | 1282 comments Welcome to Team Echidna

Now that you have found your way here please introduce yourself to the team in as much or as little detail as you wish to

Have you read the book or watched the movie?
Is this your first time playing UNO?

Please remember to link your UNO shelf, it is helpful if you only add books to this shelf as you start reading them not for long term plans, we use the shelves to double check books and page counts.

If you haven't played before please read the rules carefully. It looks far more daunting than it is. If you have any questions do ask and Gwen and I should be able to help.

Our Team Spreadsheet is linked above showing our February Cards, take a look at what color covers are needed and see what you can do.
We also have Reverse cards so take a look at each others read shelve, see if anything takes your fancy. If you have read a particularly good book recently let us know.

Books can be logged on the tracking spreadsheet, or posted here if you prefer, make sure to include details of the cards it fits.

Make sure to check in at least once a week so we know you are still playing.

Most importantly have fun and Happy Reading

Louise | 1282 comments Hi all, I’m Louise from a currently very frosty Wales. This is going to be my 7th year of UNO, where has the time gone. I’m a bit of a challenge addict and love team challenges to get me out of my comfort zone. Unusually I had only come across Cindy before. I’ve sent friend requests out to you all, if you haven’t already please accept them.

UNO 2023

Preeti (preetisunaina) | 480 comments Hi, all. I am Preeti and am from Bangalore in India. I have taken part in UNO a few times (can't remember exactly how many ☺️).
I started taking part in these challenges as a way to increase my reading and am very happy to have discovered so many new people and books as a result.
This is one of my favourite challenges which shouldn't surprise me as I have loved the card game ever since I was first introduced to it in primary school.
My UNO shelf: uno-2023-preeti‎

A while back I started adding books to uno colour specific shelves. I am linking them here in case it is of help to anybody. Only, please keep in mind that the colours may be specific to the editions I read.

💙 UNO Blue
💚 UNO Green
❤️ UNO Red
💛 UNO Yellow

DJ Ruby | 109 comments Nice to meet y'all. I am Dänah, but go by DJ here. I live in BW, Germany. This is my third or fourth time doing UNO. I have a few colored books listed: Dänah's UNO 2023. Can't wait to start; already reading a lot.

Alex | 9 comments Hi team! I am Alex and I live in London, UK. This is my first time participating in the UNO Challenge and I am extremely excited!

my UNO shelf

I read a variety of genres but this year I plan to focus on horror and thrillers. In addition, I also plan to read as many 2023 releases as possible. This being said, I am open to reading new things so I can't wait to hear your recommendations and get inspiration.

P.S. I really like our little Echidna <3

message 12: by Gwen (new)

Gwen | 316 comments Hello all!

I'm Gwen, helping out Louise as co-captain - I'm looking forward to playing with you all!

I live in Vermont in the US and this is my 4th time playing Uno and 2nd time as co-cap. Uno is by far my favorite reading challenge!

When you get a chance, be sure to check out the cards we need for February, especially the colored cards - those can sometimes be tricky to complete.

I read a wide variety of genres but some of my favorites are thrillers, horror, some sci-fi, some fantasy, post-apocalyptic, paranormal, mystery, biographies, travel memoirs, and some YA. I don't read a lot of straight-up romance but I just love a good book, regardless of genre.

And I think echidnas are adorable. At least we don't have a bug as our team name (not that there's anything wrong with bugs but...)

message 13: by Alya (new)

Alya | 111 comments Hello everyone! My name is Alina and I'm from the tiny country of Lithuania. I'm a bit bad with Goodreads specific things, but here is the link to my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

This is my third time participating. Unfortunately, I have a seasonal job and am currently working quite a lot, so I won't be able to read as much, but I'll try my best!

And if I'm not mistaken, we are in a chatty group, right?

message 14: by Gwen (new)

Gwen | 316 comments Welcome Alina, Alex, DJ, and Preeti!

I hope we're a chatty group but time will tell! I love how international we are, that's very exciting.

We still have a few more folks to check in but we are getting there. Thanks for posting your Uno bookshelves, I think Louise is going to link them up later. I meant to add mine earlier - here it is:

Uno Game 2023

Again, I'm looking forward to playing with you!

message 15: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 153 comments Hello everyone! My name is Cindy and I live in Colorado in the US. This will be my fourth time playing UNO. This was my first challenge I ever joined and it has had me hooked on then ever since! I do ready pretty much anything and everything but I don’t read a whole lot of horror. This year I’m hoping to finish a lot my series that I’ve started and haven’t finished but we’ll see how that goes.

I would like to claim only this for now:

Author last name: Vaughn

7 📘 The Wild Dead (The Bannerless Saga #2) by Carrie Vaughn

They've been on my TBR pile for a bit now so I'm glad they work for these cards!

message 24: by Sana (new)

Sana Zameer (sanazameer) | 121 comments I'm planning to read Atlantis Unmasked (Warriors of Poseidon, #4) by Alyssa Day
It works for 3 📘. Louise has already claimed the card it can work for Wild Draw 4. I'll go through my books to see what else I've got.

message 25: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 55 comments I can take yellow 5 if this is yellow enough? not sure if it's too gold? let me know. I'm looking through to see what others I have that could work for the colored ones.

The It Girl by Ruth Ware

message 26: by Gwen (new)

Gwen | 316 comments Stephanie, I think that might be more gold than yellow but we can see what Louise thinks. And if we can't decide, we can always ask the captain's group.

message 27: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 55 comments Ok thanks Gwen!

message 28: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments Hello All,
I'm in South Carolina, US. I was originally from California though. This is only my second time playing UNO and so far it's the only challenge I've attempted to participate in consistently. I get a bit confused easily so I'll try my best to look through what we need in our UNO cards and help best I can. I may occasionally need recommendations though on what books I should look for to help the team with the needed points.

My UNO Shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments I looked quickly through my books and I think this will work for
4 📗 Future Home of the Living God A Novel by Louise Erdrich

I'll claim this one for now. We start reading 2/1, correct?

message 30: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1282 comments Good morning all, I do believe we are only waiting for Ann to join us.
Looks like we only need 5 📒 covered in the coloured cards.

@Stephanie, I agree the background of your book looks gold which is a shade of yellow.
I don’t think we could use it for a colour due to the title of your book obscures most of the book so wouldn’t be enough (50%)

I’ll post here when we’re ready to start

Louise | 1282 comments You may have noticed we have 9 reverse cards in our February hands, points wise this is great but it does mean that this is going to need a little organising.

As a reminder Reverse cards are filled by reading a book another team player has already read.
Easiest way to do this is to friend your fellow teammates and check their read shelves see if something tickles your fancy.

message 33: by Alex (new)

Alex | 9 comments The Reverse cards sound so cool!

Stalking the shelves, I am up to read Wrong Place Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister for one of the reverse cards (from Stephanie's read shelf).

Oh, excellent! I have it on my TBR list as well. So we can get 2 reverse cards with the one book. Yay!

Okay, I looked at Louise's read shelf for a book on my TBR and found this one: And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

So I'll claim the green book and this book for reverse to start
my reading off : )

message 36: by Gwen (last edited Jan 19, 2023 05:45AM) (new)

Gwen | 316 comments Another easy way to check for potential Reverse cards is to go to your friend's page (click on their actual name to go to their page) then click on "More..." near the top. Then click on "Compare Books"

This will quickly show you which books your friend has read that you have in your TBR list (and vice versa). This works especially well if you and your friend have similar reading tastes.

(BTW - I've read And Then There Were None as well!)

message 37: by Preeti (new)

Preeti (preetisunaina) | 480 comments I looked at as many of your read books as I could and I seem to have quite a lot of books on my TBR that would work for Reverse. I will add them closer to the end of the month.

Alya | 111 comments Regarding a yellow 5, do you think this could work? Mediocre The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America by Ijeoma Oluo

The name of the author starts with an I, but is the book yellow enough?

message 39: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 55 comments For yellow 5 I can do I Know Who You Are by Alice Feeney and for a Reverse card I got Rogue Protocol (The Murderbot Diaries, #3) by Martha Wells from JoJo's read shelf.

I'm not sure about that cover, Alya. It doesn't look to be at least 50% yellow. Again, I will defer to Louise and we can always check with the captain's group as well.

I agree with Gwen, it doesn’t appear to meet the 50% yellow criteria.

DJ Ruby | 109 comments While I am not the chattiest, I am certainly happy there are more from this side of the globe than last time. I'm the same DJ, I am not a very chatty person. I'm definitely more of an introvert. I have also gone through my TBR stacks at home and pulled out at least 8 books to start with. I will post updates here whenever I finish a book. Hope you all are having a good Friday! : )
