46 Read a book set in North America.

Please can you all do a little intro when you pop in, so we can get to know each other? :)
I'm Cat (she/her), based in London. I'm captaining this year, with Roe's help. I've played UNO a fair few times, and love that the competition is against the cards & reading clock, especially as I get my other competitive kicks over in NBRC :)
Favourite genre is SFF, though I do read most everything, even dipping my toe into the latest version of horror (think Stephen Graham Jones, Grady Hendrix or Christina Henry)
Favourite book read in the last couple of years: The Hands of the Emperor (though it's loooooong, so maybe not for UNO!)
Books I'm looking forward to reading: Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution, People Person
Over to you!

- check out the rules and info posted up-thread
- check out the colour cards in our hand and shout out if you want to claim one or two. We've 6 WD4s, so we can duplicate 6 different colour cards, so don't be sad if someone's already claimed your preferred card. For now, limit it to max two claims so everyone who wants can get their name down :)
- post your UNO shelf here. If you could also go to your settings and set it to sort by date read, and show page numbers, that would be above and beyond!
- I'd prefer that you only add read and currently reading books to that shelf, and NOT use it as your TBR planner too - it makes it more complicated to double check that we've got all the books recorded if there are lots of not-yet-read books on it too.
- this is a FUN game, so please be kind to each other in the chat

I am Marie She / Her. Cat, Sarah and I have played many times together, but i think I have also met Sophie and Frida before.
I have played UNO several times.
I live in Leeds in God's own County Of Yorkshire. I do read most genres but Zombies, Shapeshifters are not among my favourites.
I have had a look at the colour cards and there are some I can do
I can do 5 red with

and

My shelf is not going to win the prize for most intriguing name this year Plain old Uno 2023 https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Some new faces for me on this team but I actually have met quite a few of you before! Always fun to have a mix of old and new
I read pretty much any genre, but I've recently been on a travel literature kick. I doubt I'll read many of them for Uno though, since I like to take my time with reading them to soak it all in
As a WD4 for 0 blue, I can claim

It's a standalone thats been hanging around my TBR waiting for Uno. The location is always the criterion I have most confusion with. The book is set in Iran and its a prominent part of the narrative. Is that good enough to count as location or is it too general? If it counts I can claim it as blue 5
i have plenty of color covers i can read, so i can take whatevers left over after everyone else has claimed theirs!
also, my uno shelf name is extremely creative. A simple uno2023 wouldnt do, so i chose... wait for it.... uno-2023! the dash really adds some spice to it, dont you think? ;)

I'm based in Kent, UK. I've played a lot of the team games in various groups, and captained several times before. Feel like an easier time of it at the moment, so Cat and Roe will just have to stop me backseat driving...

I agree with you on location being weird. The rule is that location should be as narrow as is sensible. So, for Harry Potter 1, the majority is in Hogwarts, so we'd use that rather than Scotland.
What that means for your Iranian book is... is there a single location within Iran that it's mostly set in (a specific town)? if there is, then it'd be that town rather than the country. If the action moves between several towns in Iran then using the country would be reasonable.

Hm, a quick glance into the book tells me it's set in Cheshmeh village, and I'm not quite sure if it moves around Iran. I'll stick to WD4 blue 0 for now, and if need be (and if it fits) we can move it around later

Kindred in Death is yellow enough in my eyes - and provides a handy learning moment too: cover colours we are being sensible about, using our team eyeballs to agree if it meets the 50% threshold or is a certain colour. If there's disagreement we won't be using it for the colour card, sorry, but it would be slotted into a regular card instead. Never going to waste a book!

Feel free to add your claimed and planned books there now :)

So excited to see that Uno is almost here! This is my second year playing. Last year Jess got me to try it out, and this year I asked Eddie if he wanted to join as well! I have quite the TBR going so I am ready to knock as many of them out as I can during this :P My favorite genre is definitely fantasy, but at this point I will give pretty much any genre a chance.
My Uno Shelf: uno-2023
As for books I am excited to read during Uno, I am also hoping to get to Babel (good choice, Cat)! & I had started the Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan a few months ago, but decided to save the rest for Uno so it'll be nice to come back to that series :)
I am also wanting to finish the last two books in the Inheritance Games series at some point (

Yay for sensible colour decisions. Now if everyone can avoid the tricky green/blue intersection that would be ideal. Teal is both in my head.

But, I'm pretty sure I can take care of green with Seven Husband of Evelyn Hugo since I have to read it for my book club next month.

I just wanted to get my check-in done. I'm sick today so I'll do my intro when I'm feeling a bit better. Really excited for my 3rd UNO!

your creativity knows no bounds Frida wish i had thought of that

I'm in! The audio is on scribd, which is handy, as the waitlist at the library is 21 weeks.

I am in I too have got the scribd audio as there are 22 people before me on the wait list at the library (so around a year). I dont read audios as quickly as real books so i may lag behind the group but i am in

My shelf is the also unoriginal uno-2023
I've been playing Uno since the first one, which was also my very first team challenge ever. I may never have stopped joining challenges since then... ;)
I like reading most things - not really into romance - and probably read mysteries the most. They're a good palate cleanser to stop too much of a particular genre all blurring into one. Too much of one thing in a row and I start to enjoy it less - which is why it takes me years to finish a series, if I ever do.
Looking forward to this year's Uno!

It's a really long audio, so I'll be pretty slow too.

Actually, I notice when I use my laptop instead of my phone there's a bit of html code so maybe I can manage.

Super excited to get started in a few weeks. This is my third UNO & is my favorite team challenge (though Wheels was also really good). I personally think it's the best because it's the perfect balance of reading whatever you want, while also maybe stepping outside of your comfort zone when the mini-challenges start. I co-captained the last two years, and decided to step back this year because I started grad school in the summer and am really busy with that!
According to Storygraph, my favorite genre is fantasy. With mystery and thriller being very close behind. That seems pretty accurate, though I tend to read what fits my mood.
I just got off the phone with Megan a bit ago and was telling her my first planned reading for UNO...I recently got my hands on the first 16 Nancy Drew books. I've been trying to find them for SO long, and I couldn't find a library that had them or any audio. I am so so excited to read them!!
I'm currently on mobile as well, so I'll tag my shelf when I get on my laptop! Can't wait to start reading with you all!

I can't believe you don't think the Leaf Sheep is peak cuteness?! What more does it need to do?!
What's your Storygraph id? I'm cat_uk. I've started using it this year, and am surprised by how much I like the book recording interface and I kinda love the stats :)

does it still ask for paid membership?? because any kind of statistical analysis makes me so happy...

It gives some basic stats for free, but there are more available if you upgrade to the paid membership. I've not paid, because the basic stats are working for me

Storygrapy is awesome! Though I forget to log Books sometimes and then have to backlog a bunch. I enjoy the statistics part tho and thats mainly why I use it. I wasn't even aware there was a paid version!
My ID is just jessbuzzard

I am with Megan when I say I have way to many TBR to choose from because I will read anything so I am also fine with filling in the holes where every we need coverage!

Me too!!! Checking it out now! LOL

Roe, jumping in at the deep end with captaining. I applaud the bravery and hopefully we'll all behave nicely to make it easy for you.
Currently sat on my laptop by the fire feeling very grateful for the warmth given the freezing temperatures outside. I hope you are all somewhere equally comfortable.
