Laura | 2892 comments Any book with Childrens as a Main Page Genre must be checked for Word Length. The following link contains many children's books, but if you can't find it on here, ask! There are separate sites for Australia and the UK, and they sometimes have different books. Or, if you can find an audio version, if it is at least 3 hours long, that works, as well.

Laura | 2892 comments Hi team! I believe I have sent/accepted friend requests from all of you! Welcome to Team Platypus! Tell us a little bit about yourself and your reading preferences. I'll start.

I'm a newly single mom of 6 who will soon be moving across country with 5 of my daughters, 5 cats, and one guinea pig to start our new life. I'm so excited. And scared!

I generally read a little bit of everything. Except Horror/Thriller. Not my cup of tea! But my favorites are always fantasy and sci-fi. I love a good space battle!

message 12: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments Woohoo! We're heeeere!!! :D

Hi, I'm Sammy, challenge addict and compulsive planner. I'll read pretty much anything I can get my hands on, though romance and YA are not my favourites (although I'm doing a little challenge in Feb that will have me reading half a dozen or so romances, just to give me a boost getting some off my tbr, lol).

I'm currently reading my way through the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list, and have several books from there to read during the first month. luckily, they all work for UNO in one way or another :)

Looking forward to having fun with you all!

message 13: by Sammy (last edited Jan 20, 2023 04:05AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments And when I say I'm a planner, I mean I have my first few books all picked out, and piled up on my desk/downloaded on my phone ready to go :D
Most of these I am needing to read for another challenge as well, so I'm glad they fit! lol.

Definites:

Murder on the Orient Express - 9 BLUE, SKIP, 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, REV (Laura)
The Talented Mr. Ripley - 3 RED, SKIP, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

The Cement Garden - 0, 2, 5, 6
Moon Palace - SKIP, 0, 4, 7, 8
A Suitable Boy - SKIP, 1, 6, 7
The Sea, the Sea - 0, 2, 4, 5
Memento Mori - 0, 2, 6

Also, I have books that can cover all of the colour cards, so if no-one can find anything for any of them that they actually want to read, I 'll be able to :)

message 14: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Murder on the Orient express, works for a reverse, because I have read it!

message 15: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 1005 comments Hello my friends! I'm always excited for Uno! And two of my favorite peeps are co-captains! How does it get better than that?

I'm a planner but not... which means I have a monthly TBR for the million and one challenges I do each month but I'll deviate when I need to for team challenges. I haven't yet dug into my books to see what works for UNO, I'll probably do that this weekend and hope that most of the books I'm already 'planning' to read work for UNO.

About me: I read anything romance (sorry, Sammy) but try to stay away from YA. And I definitely don't do horror, unless one our favorite fantasy authors happen to also be tagged horror (JR Ward, for instance). But a Stephan King fan I am not....

I'm married, 30 years this year, and have 2 grown sons. I'm expecting to have a daughter in law to be this year... thought it would happen at Christmas but so far no. Maybe Valentine's Day! I love my son's girlfriend and she is already like family so it seems almost a formality. But I guess we'll see...

Laura - so your road trip paid off and you all decided on a place? Where will you land? Still thinking NC?

message 16: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Yep! Planning to rent for 6 months and then find a house to buy.

Hello and welcome to Team Platypus!

If you don't know much about these animals, please do look them up! They're completely underrated - and a little hilarious, too. If you've seen the movie Dogma, then you know that they love making fun of the platypus, even if they think it's a cute animal hehe ;-) And they make such cute sounds!

On to the business side of things!

Once you have found your way to this thread, please introduce yourselves with your name and a link to your Uno shelf and anything else you'd like to tell us. No need to go into detail if you do not wish to! (Not everyone likes to share, and we understand!)

Please read the rules carefully if you haven't played before. It looks more daunting than it is, I promise! Uno is really easy once you get started. If after reading the rules you still have questions, feel free to ask! Captains are here to help. The veterans of the challenge will also be able to answer questions should captains not be around (due to such pesky things as sleep and work, for example, hehe).

On our team spreadsheet, you can already see our cards for the month of February. (No, as already stated by the Uno Pixie, you will not get editing rights to the official team sheet.)

Have a look at the cards, browse through your books, and see what kind of cover colours you can come up with that fit the cards until we're ready to get started. It's a nice way to make time pass quicker until we can start reading :-)

If you read a fabulous book recently, do let the team know! Maybe someone might like to pick that one up to read as a reverse?

And please do not be scared by Sammy's excessive planning :-p She may have a gazillion books ready to go but we do not expect everyone to have everything planned out. Feel free to wing it! It usually works well for Uno.

Most importantly though - HAVE FUN! Uno is a fun and social challenge with (usually) lots of chatter in the team threads.

Happy reading!

And got several of my daughters to read them, too. I do need to re-read The Other Side of the Sky, and then read the sequel now that those are done.

Please shout out for as many colour cards as you want. Also say which ones you'd prefer to read if you have more than one option. I'll distribute when/where necessary :-)

I forgot that Aurora was Jay & Amie. Amie also writes with Meagan Spooner. Sky was one of theirs, as was These Broken Stars. I love their books together almost as much as Jay & Amie.

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I could read for these:

3 Red - The Girl in the Red Coat by Kate Hamer
9 Blue - Nightblade (Nightblade #1) by Ryan Kirk

Will add more once I have more time to browse.

message 29: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Blue? The Plight Before Christmas by Kate Stewart . Works for the 2, but it has an E character, so perhaps I should save it in case we get a Blue 8 another month?

I also have Badger to the Bone (Honey Badger Chronicles, #3) by Shelly Laurenston , which is #3 in series and set in New York City.

(not saying that I own too many unread books, but I found out the other day I have around 700 unread books at home on the shelves! add to that Kindle and Audio, and I'm pushing 1000 :D :D)

Holy cow!
Though, I'm admittedly not all too far away from that number myself on my home shelves... oops. Ah well :-)
We'll never run out of reading material at least!

message 34: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments Yeah, I've no fear of running out... only running out of specifics. Almost all of them are around 300 pages, as I read all the chunky ones for towers, wheels and restaurants, and I don't have many left now! lol.

message 35: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 1005 comments Here are a couple options for me:

2 Blue
The Becoming (The Dragon Heart Legacy, #2) by Nora Roberts His Risk to Take (Line of Duty, #2) by Tessa Bailey

9 Red?
The Night Is Watching (Krewe of Hunters, #9) by Heather Graham

4 Green
American Vampire (Vampire for Hire, #3) by J.R. Rain

1 Red?
Until the Sun Falls from the Sky (The Three, #1) by Kristen Ashley

3 Red?
Time Lock (Red Moon, #3) by Micah Caida

Also, my shelf: pbba-uno

The green I can accept as well.

The others, I'm afraid, are a no from me.

Do you have a preference for one or the other you'd like to read or are absolutely going to read in February?

Audrey Jane | 176 comments *Looks closely at platypus pictures* so basically we’re team Niffler :)

Hi team ! Dag Sammy! Audrey here, Belgian living in France. Currently working for lawyers but will soon work for engineers instead as I’m changing job end of March hence the lower books/month (I usually read a bit more).
I read a bit of everything but particularly enjoy historical fiction and victorian/gothic novels. However occasionally I dive back into my previous favourite genres: UF and PNR. Lately when I’m not participating in team challenges I like to (re-)read comics/manga. I used to read a lot of them as a teenager and I’m sometimes questioning my tastes when re-reading some old favourites but still continue to read them for their nostalgic value :)

Looking forward to start this team challenge with you all!

message 41: by Kayt (last edited Jan 18, 2023 11:43AM) (new)

Kayt (kaytm) | 135 comments Good morning!!!!!!! (OK it is still morning here in Nevada at least)

I guess I should do a little introduction post here.
My name is Kayt (pronounced Kate) I am a single mom of two amazing teenage boys. I work for the State here, and also will be changing jobs as of next week. Oddly with the changing of my positions, while it will be more responsibility it will lock me back into the normal 8-5 for a while, opening up a lot more reading time! I have not played uno or even done a group challenge like this before. So please bare with me and be gentle.

I have always enjoyed reading and in past years have found myself reading a lot of YA stuff, I think it is feeds a bit of my instant gratification needs. I have found myself more interesting in LGBTQIA lit as of late, and have a bunch of series on my TBR to read for this year.

I can't wait to get to know the folx in our little group here, and pick up on any reading suggestions you may have.

Just so I have my brain on straight a little... Would this count as the 1 red? It is the first in the series, and I would say is a red themed cover. If it is not red themed enough just let me know.

Rivers of London (Rivers of London, #1) by Ben Aaronovitch

message 42: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments Hi Kayt, don't worry, UNO is so easy. Once we get started it'll all fall into place :)

As for cover colour, the general rule tends to be it needs to be at least 50% that colour ;)

message 43: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Kayt, the cover has to be at least 50% red, so that one won’t work, unfortunately.

Also, my autocorrect wants to make you Katy, so if I occasionally call you that, just know it’s not on purpose, just lack of proofreading.

Have fun with the scouring, but remember that Uno is a challenge that allows you to read whatever you want. Even non-fiction will at least work as a 0. That's one of the things I love about it. Anything I read can go somewhere! We just need to get these pesky color cards covered, and then we can really have fun!

message 48: by Audrey Jane (new)

Audrey Jane | 176 comments Is Ruby Fever (Hidden Legacy, #6) by Ilona Andrews red enough ? It could work for 3 Red (set in Houston). If not, it can be used for reverse as Laura read it.

Either The Asylum by Karen Coles or Late Eclipses (October Daye, #4) by Seanan McGuire for 2 Blue ?

Kayt (kaytm) | 135 comments OMG I am loving this already... I myself love a good plan and a good google sheet. While looking it over and looking at my tbr, I do have this for a couple of color cards. I will add more as I come across them.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo 7 Green This is a preferred read for me, as it has been on my night stand for WAY too long.

Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward 1 Red (first in series)

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, #2) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes 2 blue (second in series)

Swim to Me by Betsy Carter Blue 4 (takes place in florida)
