Shelves to help find books for color cards
red covers

***Note, some of the covers don't look like the color shown. There may be a different cover that fits. You need to read the book with the color cover for it to count (please shelf this edition as well). Also, sometimes we don't all agree on what color a book is or if it is 50% or more. When in doubt, please check.

Books must be at least 100 pages long. Children's books, poetry, graphic novels, and manga can only be used if they have at least 25,000 words.

Stacey | 610 comments So excited to start UNO! I'm Stacey, your captain for UNO this year. I live in Ohio (US), with my husband, daughter, and my dog (who is my avatar). This is my 4th year of playing UNO and it is a favorite challenge. I tend to go for mystery/horror and speculative fiction, but I just love good writing. One of the more interesting books I've read lately is Lakewood, and I also really enjoyed Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience

My uno shelf: uno-2023

Alma (almamm) | 173 comments Hi everyone, I’m live in Ireland with my hubby, my two boys and an evil cat. This is my third year playing UNO and I can’t wait to start. I tend to read romance but I can go for anything and I tend to do loads of challenges so I get out of my confort zone. I also enjoy YA, mysteries and a few other genres if I’m in the mood.

message 13: by Laura (new)

Laura H | 151 comments Hello Team- I joined this friendly group because they played UNO, but this is my first game. I live in Pennsylvania, US. and like practically all genres, especially mysteries and biographies. and enjoy hearing about what others are reading. currently reading= Violeta, it's interesting. Looking forward to getting to know the Tasmanian Devils and playing.

Charly Hart (charlyhart) | 212 comments Hello Everyone!

I'm Charly one of your co-captains and this is my 5th year playing first time as a co-captain. I live in Orange County, CA with my 2 dogs, and 2 cats which are my world. I normally go for murder/mystery/thriller and recently more romance books. The last great book I read was The Kiss Curse and it was adorable!

Diana Costa | 1027 comments Hello team! I am Diana, I'm from Portugal and this is my 6th time playing UNO. I love this challenge and I can never say no to it, although in recent years my reading time has sadly been slowly decreasing...

Some really nice books that I read last year:
The Invention of Wings
Anxious People
The Silent Patient
Ask Again, Yes

My uno shelf is here.

Can't wait to start playing with you all! :)

message 18: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 610 comments Alma, I finally visited Ireland this year. It was so much fun! I want to go back and my daughter is debating going to college there. (She seems to think I'll be against this for some reason).

Laura, I love your profile pic! So cute! I love animals. I had an evil cat that I miss. Sadly, my husband doesn't really like cats and I think my dog wouldn't do well with one.

Diana, welcome back! Um, your reading is still impressive. Can't wait to check out some of your favorites.

Alma (almamm) | 173 comments I’m glad you enjoyed your stay here. I hope it didn’t rain too much. But it wouldn’t be the Emerald Isle if it wasn’t for the weather ☺️. Where did you go and what was your favourite?
My husband doesn’t like our cat either and she has a tendency to sleep on his lap. We’re always very weary of her sudden bad moods just in case.
I agree with you Stacey, Laura H photo is adorable.

Skye Blue ☆*~゚ლ(´ڡ`ლ)~*☆ (surendraskye) | 251 comments Hi all, I'm Skye. I've played once, I always miss the sign up time. I barely squeeked in at the last moment this year. I don't remember how, but I'm sure I'll pick it up quick.

I'm in California. I live with my Hubby, and 3 young men. 2 are my sons 19 and 21, and my nefew will be 19 next month. I read primarily m/m romance. When I venture outside that I usually go with either urban fantasy romance--or non romance.

My reading has slowed down a lot over the last year or so. I'm still hoping to be able to complete 3 books a week. The last couple months I've been only doing about 2 a week.

here is my Uno shelf.

It was so cute! I really enjoyed it. I'm trying to mix in a different book between my murder/thriller books and I find that romance is cute and the genre is growing on me a little at a time.

Stacey | 610 comments Welcome Skye! Glad you signed up. If you are a little late, we always pull from reserves along the way, so signing up late can still work (for future).

Alma, my sister and I took our parents to Ireland. We did a tour with a small tourguide of SW Ireland, primarily. There were 12 people on the tour, 8 of which were my family, so it was lovely. We also had amazing weather. We spent a few days in Dublin before and after the tour. So many fun things! My favorite was Skellig Michael; we were there for puffin nesting which was so great. I also really want to go back to the Gougane Barra Hotel and spend time there. Plus there is so much we didn't see!

Stacey | 610 comments We are still waiting for 1 member, hopefully, she will stop in soon. Does anyone want to start claiming colored cards? If you have any you would really like to read for, let me know. I like to have them accounted for near the beginning so we make sure to get them all.

message 28: by Skye Blue ☆*~゚ლ(´ڡ`ლ)~*☆ (last edited Jan 18, 2023 04:29PM) (new)

Skye Blue ☆*~゚ლ(´ڡ`ლ)~*☆ (surendraskye) | 251 comments I don't really recall how this works.
I found 2 green books

The Shackles That Hold Us (The Magi Accounts #2) by Michele Notaro
green cover and author starts with N

and Green 6
Fairy and Impartial (Starfig Investigations, #4) by Meghan Maslow or Fairy and Impartial (Starfig Investigations, #4) by Meghan Maslow
green cover and MC's name starts with S

Sorry, just trying to remember. Does every book has to be a color and the number?
or is it a book has to be a color or the number?

message 29: by Stacey (last edited Jan 18, 2023 06:06PM) (new)

Stacey | 610 comments For each hand we have a certain # of color cards. There are 8 color cards we need to read for plus one Wild Draw 4, which means we need to reread one of the others. For the colors, the covers have to be over 50% of that color. The two for Green 6 don't look like quite enough. Not sure about Green 2. Since these are harder, and tend to be fun to find, we will try to make sure everyone who wants one can get one.

For the remaining cards, we don't need to worry about the color, just the #. So, 0 is zero in title, stand alone book, or title, author name (first or last), character name (first or last), or place that starts with Z. The top of the spreadsheet lists everything to help you remember.

There are a few special cards. Skip is K or P. Reverse is reading a book another member has read. If you friend the other members, it makes it easy to see if any of them have read a book you are reading.

For the other cards, the co-captains and I will figure out how to put them into the hands based on strategy - for example, 7s are hard so fill them first. That is why we ask for you to let us know all the ways books fit. That way we can move things around if needed.

Laura H | 151 comments Thank you guys for your patience with me! I plan on checking in weekly, probably more. There are few days in April I will be offline, but will still be reading. I said two books per week, but will likely be able to read more.

I'm pretty confused about how to start playing but I'm hoping if I watch the first hand play out, I'll get it.

For February I definitely want to read , So probably first, if it fits the group's plan:
Hide by Kiersten White Yellow cover, Title H, Author first K last W, Character M, Setting A
Brave Water by Sarah Robsdottir Author first S, Characters M and T, Setting E

Also I could read 7th in series or 7 in title:
The Bounty (Fox and O'Hare, #7) by Janet Evanovich Right Behind You by Lisa Gardner Victims (Alex Delaware, #27) by Jonathan Kellerman Confessions on the 7 45 by Lisa Unger Seventy-Seven Clocks (Bryant & May #3) by Christopher Fowler Seven Year Switch by Claire Cook

message 42: by Carina (new)

Carina | 14 comments Hello everyone! I'm Carina, I also live in Portugal and this is my first year playing UNO (I might be a bit lost, sorry, but I'm making an effort to keep up). I like reading pretty much everything, Right now I'm reading the Happinness Advantage and Metropolis, but I also love a good mistery and a good novel.
I read here that someone is reading Violeta, I read it pretty much right after release and I love it! Recent books that I also loved were Afterlives and the entire Thursday Murder Club series.
Looking forward to go for this, I couldn't quite understand how the cards and the distribuition of books work, so if anyone could tell me a for Dummies version would be much appreaciated.

message 43: by Stephie (last edited Jan 24, 2023 03:04PM) (new)

Stephie | 377 comments Hello all! My name is Stephanie and this is my 3rd or 4th time playing. I'm from NYC and I live with my husband and 10 month old daughter. I read a lot of fantasy and historical fiction but will be branching out this year into more non fiction. I'm a librarian so books are life! I'll add my uno shelf when I get to a computer. The app doesn't have a link feature that I can find. Recent read I loved was actually a contemporary romance. Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute. It's a YA.

hello! I will help Stacey add the reverse card for you. You are correct as that is how the reverse card works. When you finish the book, just notate who else read it just in case it gets lost in the thread.

Yes, that is exactly how it works. For books that don't fit our color cards, please also add all the different options. I'll explain below. I've udpated the book on the spreadsheet for you with the info I could find easily. You can update while/after reading with additional characters, or place if those work.

message 48: by Stacey (last edited Jan 21, 2023 09:27AM) (new)

Stacey | 610 comments Hi all! With a lot of new players (or newer), the rules and spreadsheets can be tricky. How I like to tackle UNO:
1 - We assign the color cards to make sure we have them covered
2 - For all other books we add in all of the options it fits

If you check out the tracking sheet now, you can see how Skye's book is listed. Name for the book, actual book below. This is helpful in case you decide to change your book.

For non color covers, I've highlighted Alma's book Five Feet Apart. Based on the info on Goodreads, it fits for 5 different options (see column R). This is great as both 5s and Reverses are tricky, so we can use it for either based on how books work out.

If you don't like spreadsheets, or that is too complicated, you can just do a completion post in this thread and we can add it for you. You do not need to do both, one works.

The orange sections are for the captains to ensure that everything was checked and mark where a book was used to help us with adding to the official spreadsheet.

We will do periodic updates to let you know where we stand and what we need.

Thanks Laura! We don't need any yellow cards this month, but I've read Hide so it can work as a Reverse along with some other good cards.

Any of the 7s would be great.

Stacey | 610 comments And sorry all for not responding quickly! I do work. My job is pretty flexible most of the time so I often check in multiple times a day in case there are questions. Yesterday I was traveling for work and wasn't able to check in at all. That may happen from time to time, but I'll be around and Charly and Carina are also here to help.
