I’ve been playing this all day. Christmas with the Weasleys at the Burrow. They are one of my favorite families ever. I love them very, very much.

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Looking forward to this.

Felina | 648 comments I’m here for it

Denis (deez_bookish_adventures) (denis_lamontagne) | 195 comments I'm here for the chatter :)

Latasha (latasha513) | 141 comments I started this early as I have a few planned for January and I don’t read as fast as I use to.
I’m so so glad in chapter 4- Flourish & Blotts (view spoiler)

Indeed, Latasha.

On average, while I mostly love the movies - the books are better!

Latasha (latasha513) | 141 comments The first 2 movies are my favorite and Goblet of Fire is my favorite of the series.

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Latasha wrote: "The first 2 movies are my favorite and Goblet of Fire is my favorite of the series."

Interesting - for me, 2, 3 and 6 are the standout movies, but 1, 3, 4, 5 & 6 are the best books.

Felina | 648 comments I think all of the books are better than the movies. I don’t like the first few movies as much because I think child actors are always problematic. As much as I think Daniel Radcliffe came into his own, I think he was terrible the first few movies. I still like the movies though whereas some people can’t even find a simple positive thing to say.

As for the books, I can’t honestly say which is my favorite. I used to dislike Phoenix because Harry is such a douche but it’s grown on me a lot. I think Azkaban is probably the best for plot though.

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Yep, the plotting in Azkaban is razor-sharp, and doubly hard to do when time travel is involved.

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Starting this today.

Narilka | 120 comments I think I'll be starting closer to the end of the month.

Latasha (latasha513) | 141 comments Done! I just love this book so much. I love the happy ending. I love Dobby so much. My sister & niece got me a wood cut picture of Dobby for Christmas. Being so brave and noble is a sure fire way to win my heart & devout loyalty. There is very little differences between the book & movie. I’m glad I went back to Hogwarts with y’all and can’t wait til the next one.

Latasha (latasha513) | 141 comments I won’t lie, it’s really hard not to run to my library and get the next book and start on it RIGHT NOW!

yup....I literally started book 3 ten minutes after I finished this. I have no self-control sometimes. :)

I am trying to wait for the group to catch up to book 4 before I start again. At least that is the plan.... Trying is the key word here. :)

Latasha (latasha513) | 141 comments You can do it!

Felina | 648 comments I read 1 and 2 back to back last month. I had to stop myself going further. This series is so bingeable.

I went ahead and set up the next book thread for Book #3 starting in February - this is for those of you that want to go ahead and read book three then at least the thread would be on here. :)

Here is the thread:

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Just completed ch 8.

I'm chuckling away as Harry deals with Lockhart's enthusiastic narcissism.

It's very amusing how Lockhart who is totally self-obsessed and seemingly oblivious to any form of disapproval manages to be such an entertaining character on the page.

It must be that winning smile...

Latasha (latasha513) | 141 comments Lol it must be!

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments 😊

Narilka | 120 comments I'll be starting tonight.

Narilka | 120 comments I love how easy it is to get back into these books. Loved that rescue (view spoiler) in Ch 2! The Continuing Adventures of Fred and George could be a fun spin off series if Rowling ever wanted to write it haha

Latasha (latasha513) | 141 comments I love Fred & George but to be fair, I love all the Weasley’s. Maybe not Percy

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Narilka wrote: "I love how easy it is to get back into these books. Loved that rescue [spoilers removed] in Ch 2! The Continuing Adventures of Fred and George could be a fun spin off series if Rowling ever wanted ..."

I'd read that. It'd be one caper after another.

Narilka | 120 comments Ch 9 - spoiler is for a future book too, but I forget which - (view spoiler)

If someone remembers off hand which book that's from I'll edit this message.

Latasha (latasha513) | 141 comments Narilka wrote: "Ch 9 - spoiler is for a future book too, but I forget which - Ahhh! So they explain how Ron got his fear of spiders. Makes a lot of sense to me, stupid Fred prank lol Though in fairness I would hav..."

Maybe order of the Phoenix?

Narilka | 120 comments I finished yesterday and forgot to come post :)

Overall, it was another highly enjoyable read. (view spoiler)

Greame, I saw your review and agree about Tom Riddle. Talk about an underutilized villain. And all that monologuing lol

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Indeed, Narilka.

Hagrid's life was a huge injustice. He's a little like the person who enjoys animals better than humans because animals aren't trying to eff him over, but there's no bitterness in him. He's probably the most compassionate character in the book. I've got a real soft spot in my heart for Hagrid.

As I read the final encounter again last week, I was struck by just how lucky Harry was to survive. Quite a few things just went his way ... but I just smile ... Rowling had built such a strong desire in the reader for Harry to win and save not only his own life, but poor innocent Ginny (an 11 yo groomed and then used by both Malfoy Snr, and Riddle) we just go ... "Yeah! Go get 'im, Harry!" and all the, cough 'plot armor,' cough, slides past as derring-do.

From an author's perspective - it's brilliant. As a reader, I would've liked Riddle to be more practically ruthless, but I can see that would have required Harry to be more practically heroic - which would have been a stretch (perhaps unbelievable so) for a 12 yo.

On another note: it strikes me that Riddle as a memory seems a lot like a 'tulpa,' https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...

Of course, if Riddle had succeeded there'd be two Voldemorts running around. The real one seeking to restore himself and this 'living memory,' generated from Ginny's life force.

Narilka | 120 comments Agreed about Hagrid. He's a gentle soul. I'd be in his hut regularly to see what interesting critter he has rescued each week ;)

A tulpa is interesting. I never thought about it that way but it does seem to fit.

I always thought that if Riddle had succeeded he'd merge with present day Voldemort for a power boost.

Is this both of y’all’s first time reading this series?

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Narilka wrote: "I always thought that if Riddle had succeeded he'd merge with present day Voldemort for a power boost..."

I hadn't considered that option. I'm not aware of 'the end game,' for the memory ever being spelled out.

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Latasha wrote: "Is this both of y’all’s first time reading this series?..."

Third time for me, Latasha.

Latasha (latasha513) | 141 comments I’m happy to be along with you and to consider all these things you are pointing out that I never considered.

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments I'm a huge fan. 😍

Narilka | 120 comments Latasha wrote: "Is this both of y’all’s first time reading this series?"

No, it is a reread for me.

I don't think it was. I don't remember it being revisited at all later on either. I mostly put it in the full series context (view spoiler)

Thought my memory of the series is a bit dodgy as a blend of the books plus movies :D I've seen the movies more times than I've read the books.

Latasha (latasha513) | 141 comments I watch the movies more too.
