Happy New Year!

Your Goodreads Reading Challenge for January is to read something basketball related! It can be fiction or nonfiction, for any age. Why basketball? This year, the library's Winter Reading Challenge is an All-Star Challenge. If you complete the Winter Reading program, you will be entered into a prize drawing to win a pair of tickets to a home game with the Utah Jazz!

The Winter Reading Challenge is just like the Summer Reading Challenge, just shorter. You only have to fill in 25 spaces, instead of 30. You can Read, Create, Learn, Play or Connect to fill in the spots. You can pick up a reading record at your local branch, print out the reading record from the above website, or sign up using Beanstack for the digital experience. Once you mark off all of the spaces, return your reading record to the library to pick up a free book, as well as fill out that entry form for the prize drawing.

I recommend Small World by Jonathan Evison. One of the characters is a high school basketball star. This is a good book! I read it in a different month, so will try and find something new I can use for this month's challenge.

I will be Reading Dragon Hoops by Gene Luen Yang. Also, if anyone is looking for shorter read I recommend The Crossover by Kwame Alexander.

Got everyone signed up in Beanstack. Now I just need to look for a basketball book...

I love both of those books!

I just read Breaking Through by Sue Macy about female athletes in the 1920s and she has a book specifically about basketball, so I'll probably read that. My youngest is starting Jr Jazz so maybe we'll read it together. (Basketball Belles by Sue Macy)

Or maybe not. The library apparently doesn't have Basketball Belles.

I read Sooley by John Grisham a few months ago, and really liked it, but, yes, I will find something else to read for the January 2023 challenge. Thanks for posting these challenges!

I found a book about the Jazz Bear that I will be reading. Dream Big: The Journey of the Jazz Bear by Aron Simkins

I read The Last Temptation of Rick Pitino by Michael Sokolove.

I also threw in Sooley by John Grisham for good measure.

1/1 (or 1/10, or 1/15) for 2023.

For the January challenge I am going to read The Crossover by Kwame Alexander. I set a goal for myself to complete all the Goodreads challenges this year. Can't wait to get started!

I’m going to listen to Rebound by Kwame Alexander.

I finished reading Sooley by John Grisham and it was really good. I would not have read this book if not for the challenge as I am not a fan of basketball, but I would recommend this book. Such amazing characters. I became really attached to them.

I finished The Crossover in one sitting this afternoon. The poetry was fantastic, and I loved the family story.

I finished Rebound by Kwame Alexander, and felt the same way as Brittany with The Crossover - great poetry and important family story.

Hey Britt, I checked into it, and Basketball Belles is an older title from 2011, which is why we don't have it. It is available for interlibrary loan, although, there isn't a guarantee you'd get it before the end of the month.

But if you still want to read it, you can try interlibrary loan.

I can't resist a good scandal book, so I read this one too. Not bad.

I completed Dust Bowl Girls: The Inspiring Story of the Team That Barnstormed Its Way to Basketball Glory by Lydia Reeder on 1/12.

I finished Dragon Hoops yesterday. It was actually pretty interesting.

In the State of the County address, last night Mayor Wilson suggested a community read. Basketball: A Love Story. Has anyone read this?

I put a copy on hold and it’s on its way. I’ll try it out.

I have finished Dream Big: The Journey of the Jazz Bear by Aron Simkins. I did not care for it. for it. Evidently I read it several years ago. Entirely forgettable.

I read Camp Average: Double Foul. Finished with minutes to spare.
