Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Well, I failed at thinking of a better title! Pretty much same structure as the last couple of years, except I don't have enough classics and non fiction for a whole month, so I'm combining them.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments 1st book down, took slightly longer than I'd hoped, given I was off work, but was quite slow to get into - I know I'm supposed to be reading male authors this month, but I had one female left on my KU selection. I did try reading a paperback, but gave up after 30 pages, finding it a struggle - it's a classic, so I'll try again for classic month.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments For some reason my second took longer though it wasn't a heavy going book so I was showing as one behind until I finished it today. **** Update - it was my third. Completely forgot I'd read one I didn't enjoy in a hurry to get it back to the library as it was a 2 week loan with no renewal so it was the second book that was the slog ******

I'm in the last few weeks of a KU deal but I have too many paperbacks to get through and am trying to budget so I don't think I'll renew it. Therefore have a few to get through before end of month such as the rest of the Graham Brack Master Mercurius which I'm enjoying.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments I didn't renew my deal, even though they offered me a good deal when I cancelled it, I have too many paid books (and seemed to have acquired 5 in the last two days, oops! Although 2 Stephen Kings, one 99p, one £1.25, both newish books, The Institute and Billy Summers)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments End of January update: really pleased with January, my target works out at 1 book per week, and I've read 6 this month (1 kind of DNF, I will try again later in the year), so ahead of my challenge, and 2,521 pages, so possibly ahead there too? And all 6 of my books had some element of white/blue, I'm classing 3 for my colour challenge at the moment, unless the person who looks after that challenge says more count. And mainly 4 star reads, which is rare for me, think my favourite might have been the one I finished yesterday, The Executioner

The Executioner (Robert Hunter, #2) by Chris Carter
Elevator Pitch by Linwood Barclay
The Holiday by T.M. Logan
The Catch by T.M. Logan
The House at Phantom Park by Graham Masterton
The Survivors Club by Lisa Gardner

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments February is paperback month, and one of my PIFM books is one I've wanted to read for ages, and it took me months to get a copy at a reasonable price, so looking forward to that! In fact, looking forward to all bar one of my choices.

message 24: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments That's good - you're on a roll already.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments I am, and spent two hours reading yesterday, which was nearly half my book - although good thing as I didn't have as much time today

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Feb catch up, 5.5 books (thought I had long enough to read an extra book, but things went crazy and only got halfway through it!). A good selection though, will read more of The Thursday Murder Club, another DNF with Change of Heart. March is new authors, started well with 39% of a book read in one day. I was very pleased with myself on Friday, one of the charity shops were giving books away, I did go in, but came home empty handed - however, I had got two from the book swap table in the local shop on Tue and have bought about 10 kindle books this week, although I was under my allowance for monthly book deal.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments That's good Desley. Am getting through a fair few as I have a Kindle Unlimited deal but that runs out early April so trying to get through a couple of series I'm really enjoying.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Oh, that's just reminded me the new series is on KU and I got an offer of a deal, maybe I should take it up.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Decided to go to the library the other day, as I keep getting cravings to go there, and was pleasantly surprised, it's much more of a community space than it used to be, they are currently offering a warm space (you can go and get a free hot drink and use the wifi), and they allow people to go and work there, if they don't have a decent setup to work from home, they don't care if you are there from when they open to when they close, as they just want it to be used so it's seen as a valuable resource. There were loads of activities on, and even though I mainly read on my kindle now, I could go and sit in there and read my book without anyone minding, I think I might try it for a bit this week. Just seen there is a walking group, seeing if a friend will come with me.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments 6 books by new authors read, I had hoped for an extra one due to having more time, but I really struggled with one of them. Three were new series and all ones I'd happily continue. I did read reviews of the one I struggled with (Under Her Care) and apparently it isn't a reflection of her style, so I might try her again.

April will be Serial Eyes, even though I have read some of the Peter James books previously, I am going to start at the beginning, as it will be a long time since I read some of the older ones.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments It's interesting to go back and re-read things you haven't read for years. I found with some that I didn't rate them anywhere near as highly but others I did still enjoy.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments So, it turns out being unemployed helps a lot with book reading! I've read 6.5 of the Peter James books, and at least 3 are over 600 pages! Luckily May is continuing series month, so might get another one in! I do have some good books lined up, so looking forward to May.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Might have to re-think the next few month's of books, got a free month of Audible (even though I've never got into audio books), and 3 months of KU

message 34: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Oh that's good Desley. My KU trial ended some time ago and it would now be full price which has gone up as well. Given the number of physical books to read and pass on to the charity shops, I can't justify that at present.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Yes, I couldn't justify paying for KU, but if it's free, I'll use it.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "Yes, I couldn't justify paying for KU, but if it's free, I'll use it."

Understandably! The only problem I found was I have a lot of paperbacks still that I want to read and give to charity to declutter a bit and with the KU deal I wasn't doing that as I had various series to finish before the deal ran out. I still ended up buying various Kindle books in any case especially since the deal finished so still am not getting through the paperbacks like I should!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments I keep acquiring both kindle and paperbacks, more than I can read! At least we have plenty of options!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Well, being unemployed and good weather continues to help my reading - 12 books read in May, which does include 2 audio books (but not the one I gave up on partway through, as I got the kindle version on offer) and an 86 page novella I got as I didn't want to miss a day of reading! 3 of them were over 500 pages, one was 700 pages which I read in 5 days. I've pretty much managed to stick to my Continuing Series theme while using KU. I'm glad I had an Audible Trial, but it did get cancelled this morning, I really couldn't get into audio books, the last one was the most enjoyable, a Poirot series narrated by Hugh Fraser and David Suchet (although not David Suchet in all of them). I'm doing 'free books' in June, so I can read anything from KU that takes my fancy, definitely going to try another Lucinda Berry book and while looking through the new monthly selection, I noticed quite a few that sounded quirky were on KU, so might try some of those, like one that involves a cat detective. Having my bathroom replaced next week, and it's supposed to be nice weather, so might spend more time sat outside somewhere reading to get away from the noise, the cats will all likely hide and ignore me.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Nice plan, reading outside. I don't have KU now, but have plenty of books lined up having bought a whole bunch on ebay cheap, all retellings of the Trojan War!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments June was another good month, 8 books read so I decided to increase my target to 75, as I didn't have a job then and got a holiday next month. I do however start a new admin job next week, it's only a 6 month temp job, but in the same building as the library, so when the weather is too bad to get out at lunch, I can just walk from the third floor to the first floor and sit there and read! Ironically yesterday I saw that the full time library assistant job that I've been waiting for has been published, so need to apply for that!

message 41: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Good luck Desley!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Well, I need to double check, but working has affected my reading, only seem to have read 3.5 books this month (won't get to finish my last book today). I am away Tue to Sat though, so hopefully will start August off well!

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments Good luck with the library assistant job!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Well, between my new job, doing craft fairs with my friend and trying to maintain my best ever walking streak, I don't seem to have much time to keep updating challenge and not as much reading time, so no longer ahead on my challenge, but at least not behind! Have tried getting on top of things like batch cooking with a free couple of weekends so that I can have more reading time, so fingers crossed.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Still behind on reading, which is a shame as I'm also now behind on my reading challenge. Walking streak ended at 204 days, with the clock change it didn't feel safe trying to walk 3 miles after work. I have enjoyed having a bit extra reading time the last few days though. Got craft fairs kind of the next 7 weekends (last but one weekend is a Thu night rather than the weekend). November is first in series, but don't seem to have as many as I thought, not a bad thing with less reading time!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Well, rather late for my end of year catch up, having amended my target a couple of times. I did end up hitting it. Have had a good year of reading, more than usual for a period due to no job, then slowed down a lot while adjusting to new job and new hobby, though while the weather has been bad, it has been easier to find reading time.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments That's good Desley! Well done.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Thanks Pam. Am not going to do a challenge thread this year, was really bad at keeping up with it last year. Have got a target, and still doing some of the themed months.

message 49: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments OK. Will you be posting anywhere what you're reading and what you think of it?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Probably not, have been really bad about it recently! Will use the tracker on GR
