20.4 – Author! Author! - Elizabeth P's Task: End of an Era

This is my second year participating in Americorps, a volunteer program sponsored by the United States government. It’s a lot like the Peace Corps, except I moved to Colorado instead of a new country (a girl’s gotta ski!). Regardless, this June my time will be completed, and I’ll have to find something new to do. So, I decided this task would be dedicated to the things that go along with my service term!

Choose one of the following options and read one book for that option.
Required: State Option.

Option One: Tutor Time
My main volunteering job during the past two years has been at an elementary school, where I tutor K-3 graders in reading. I work one on one with 15 students for 20 minutes every day, which usually flies by because my kids are so awesome.

Read a book with exactly two people on the cover.

Examples: The Job (Fox and O'Hare, #3) by Janet Evanovich Sweet Peril (The Sweet Trilogy, #2) by Wendy Higgins The Best Man (Blue Heron #1) by Kristan Higgins Angela's Ashes (Frank McCourt, #1) by Frank McCourt

Required: Include Cover

Option Two: Repetition, Repetition, Repetition!
All 15 of my kids are put into one specific intervention, which we do every day. So, even though the stories (usually) change, we always do the same thing. And a lot of my kids are in the same intervention, which means that I can read the same story six times in one day and it’s not odd at all.

Read a book that has three words in the title, two of which must start with the same letter. Subtitles can be ignored.

Examples: Season of Storms, About a Boy, The Great Gatsby, One Plus One, Life After Life

Option Three: So Many Hours!
I have to complete over 1700 volunteer hours in order to finish my service. So, in addition to all my time at the elementary school, I also volunteer at the library, the children’s museum, and lots of 5Ks. Fun fact about volunteering – you often get t-shirts and free food just for giving up some of your time. It’s a great way to make friends and feed yourself!

Read a book whose author’s first and last name (name in the last position) initials are in the word VOLUNTEER. Middle initials can be ignored, letters can only be used as often as they appear (E used twice, the rest once).

Just want to check that this works as two people, given they are a bit abstract. Thanks

Quick question. Can the repeated letter be on a world like the, and, or or?

Yay! I actually wrote option two so that I could fit in one I wanted to read too!

As long as the title only has three words, using the repeated letters on those words is definitely okay.

Narumon Two books that I want to check would work for Option 2 (hopefully one works!)

1) Genocide of One - "Of" and "One" both start with "O"
2) Dr. Mutter's Marvels: A True Tale of Intrigue and Innovation at the Dawn of Modern Medicine - "Mutter" and "Marvels" both start with "M". Hopefully Dr. counts as a word :)

Wanda (wanda71) | 1770 comments Confirming this for option 1-the shadows of the dancers do not count as people.
Dead Man Waltzing (A Ballroom Dance Mystery #2) by Ella Barrick

message 21: by Catie (new)

Catie | 185 comments I just want to check how you're defining last name - a few of the other challenges this time around are saying it's the "last word of the author's name preceded by a space" - I'd like to read a book by Ursula K. Le Guin for option 3: initials in volunteer - but although her surname is Le Guin, and therefore I'd assume her initials were "UKL" or "UL" for the purposes of this challenge, I wanted to double check.

I would consider her initials to be UL as well. Approved!

LouLouReads | 221 comments Does Six-Gun Snow White count as three words or four? Always unsure with hyphens.

ETA Alternatively, does it count as only having two people on the front cover? One of the humanoid figures is half-deer (which is obvious on the cover, I hope).

Six-Gun Snow White by Catherynne M. Valente

I have been told that hyphens make it only one word, so Six-Gun Snow White would work for option 2!

In terms of the cover, I would say it's 2 1/2 people so it would not work as exactly 2. But luckily it works for the three word option so should be good!

I am sorry to say that I was incorrect when I wrote this response. I did not realize that it was part of the SRC rules that the final initial was the last word of the author's name preceded by a space, and I was wrong to give the approval. The task will be updated soon to reflect that issue. Sorry everyone!

You can see an outline of a third person in the background, so I'm going to have to say no on this one.
