A Song Below Water is a young adult fantasy about a world that resembles ours, but where magical beings exist. The story is about two black girls, one of whom is a siren. Sirens, who happen to all be black women, are feared and controlled by society, so Tavia must hide who she really is and make sure her true voice isn't heard. The world is unique and interesting and the magical beings are different than those usually found in. Although there is a bit of angst and parental misunderstandings common in young adult stories, it was pretty realistically done and not annoying. I liked how current events and issues facing black women in our society are woven into the story in a credible and moving way. I look forward to picking up the next book in the series.
Nice review!! I also had this on my Subdue list as I was intrigued but hadn't heard much about it. Glad to see a solid recommendation and may try to read sooner than later now.
