message 1: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Hello, new thread, starting tomorrow :)

message 2: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments Hello :)

message 3: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Started today...the society they live in is founded on racism under the cover of preserving American values, it just makes me mad
Not a spoiler...lol

message 4: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments It’s almost like reading the giver

message 5: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments I think I read that too many years ago lol...wasn't that with passing on memories? my memory is foggy on it...bad pun haha
It reminded me a bit of Fahrenheit 451 cause of the books.

message 6: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments Ohh interesting! I haven't started it yet.

I'm currently reading The House in the Pines... so I'll start this one tomorrow.

message 7: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments No worries, Vanessa!
Are you liking The House in the pines?

message 8: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments Yeah I meant just cause it’s got that government tells everyone what to think etc < but ya Corina it was pretty much how the government tells you what you can eat, when you can do it ETC but yes it was about the boy whose job becomes the keeper of memories etc

message 9: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Oh yes...only remembered the boy lol

message 10: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments I feel so sorry for Bird :(

message 11: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments Me too :(

message 12: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5929 comments Oh, I really want to read this one, but don't have the time right now. I'll be interested to see what you all think of it!

message 13: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments K. So far I like Bird 🦅 but it is a little dystopian like

message 14: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments No worries, Kristie. I like Celeste Ng's writing but it is definitely a different set up than her previous books with it being dystopian. I feel for Bird who is trying to figure out the world around him and what happened to his mother.

message 15: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments I know I do too and it’s sad to have her memories all over the place and constantly having people telling you how bad she is

message 16: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Yeah, sad and tough and I know his dad is trying to keep him safe, but its so hard not to question things...

message 17: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments I think his dad keeps in contact with her and there still together

message 18: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments That’s my prediction lol

message 19: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Lol...I was considering that as well...that they did that to protect Bird

message 20: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments Yah or to throw the PACT off their scent so to speak

message 21: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Could be...I was definitely thinking about it as an option

message 22: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments @Corina- I am liking House of Pines currently. it's interesting.

Going to start this tomorrow

message 23: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments I was a bit unsure about picking it up, but I might give it a go if you like it :)

message 24: by Bella (new)

Bella | 1177 comments I just start this one, I'll update you guys as I go along! So far, feeling for Bird :/

message 25: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments All good, Bella! I'm at page 130 or somewhere around there and something important happens but for some reason the journey there felt a bit anticlimatic lol

message 26: by Bella (new)

Bella | 1177 comments okay! in about 20% through, not sure what page it is since I'm on audio! and it doesn't have chapters haha but I just started the section that says, "When his father gets home, Bird decides, he will ask."

message 27: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Haha..the lack of chapter numbers is a bit confusing.

message 28: by Randy (new)

Randy Gravitz | 7 comments Because I saw this thread, bought the signed copy on release day, loved Little Fires Everywhere (both the book and then the show) and resolved to participate in more group reads in 2023 I began this book today. I don’t know if it is a January read and I’m behind most of you. I read/listen to 5-10 books at a time. I probably won’t finish until after many of you do. I’ll keep this discussion going well into February. I’m looking forward to reading all of your comments in future (to avoid spoilers) but will offer my 2 cents and hopefully engage some of you when I’ve finished.

message 29: by Bella (new)

Bella | 1177 comments sounds good, Randy! Hope you like this one :)

message 30: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments Nice to meet you Randy! We don’t really designate books for specific months but we do stay on the topic until everyone is done with the book! Hope you like it!

message 31: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Hope you enjoy this one, Randy.

message 32: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Haven't done much reading last night...so I'm around page 150. We are starting to see how the Crisis started and I assume how PACT came about.

message 33: by Bella (new)

Bella | 1177 comments ohh okay! I believe I may have gotten to the part you were talking about yesterday, where Bird was in the library?

message 34: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Its past that :) he finds some clues at the library

message 35: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments I'm trying not to spoil anything lol

message 36: by Bella (new)

Bella | 1177 comments oh okay I see! hmm...

message 37: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Bird will decide to do something based on the clues he finds about his mother...vague haha

message 38: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments I'm going to start this today... I guess you guys are way ahead.

message 39: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments No worries, Vanessa. I'm about half way, but its not a long book :)

message 40: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments Ya once you get going Vanessa you’ll catch up or we will wait for you of course!

I’m about half way too!

message 41: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments I have to say...I expected to love this, but I find it just ok. I mean I like Bird and I feel for him and what PACT is doing makes me mad, so I don't know. I left it at page 200 last night.

message 42: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments Yeah I’m the same way Corina like I feel like I’ll finish but I was expecting so much more from her based off the last couple of books.

message 43: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments I feel like this story has been done over and over and while I feel sorry for Bird, I’m already looking forward to another book lol

message 44: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Exactly, Courtney...made our expectatioms were too high...but I'm with you.

message 45: by Bella (new)

Bella | 1177 comments I'm only 25% through with this one, Vanessa! You'll catch up in no time lol

message 46: by Bella (new)

Bella | 1177 comments yeah, I think I just am not a fan of Celeste Ng's writing style. I've read Little Fires Everywhere and Everything I Never Told You and both fell flat to me. Very important themes, the characters go through immense hardships, etc., but I think her writing style just doesn't do it to me. The characters are obviously struggling but I don't really care about them in the way that I have for other characters written by other authors

message 47: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Webb | 1361 comments Yeah I understand what you mean Bella. I actually loved Little Fires and Everything I never told you which is why I’m surprised this one is falling flat but Corina I think your right about our expectations being too high because I know mine were.

message 48: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments I see what you mean, Bella! I loved Little fires but wasn't as impressed with Everything. I agree with the important themes that she tackles but yeah, I think I went into this one expecting a lot and I feel disappointed. I mean I still have about 130 pages to go...

message 49: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Also, I do think her writing is good...but sometimes I just don't connect with it for some reason.

message 50: by Bella (new)

Bella | 1177 comments yeah expectations definitely played a role lol. I am loving the relationship Bird has with cats though! I think it's so cute!
yeah I agree, Corina! She's a great writer, but just not the type I typically enjoy reading
