This book was enjoyable but not extraordinary. Maybe 3.25 ๐ would be more accurate, but it's there.
I would've never picked this book based on the premise alone, but a while ago I listened to an interview with Leigh Bardugo and she praised Zoraida Cordova for her diverse cast of characters. It made me curious. This is the first book by the author that I happened to come across.
The book has a simple plot, using the quest trope to tell a story of family, belonging, and the things that make us who we are. It's the story of a girl who comes to accept and embrace herself for what she is. It's quick and fast-paced, and I loved the South American inspiration for the world. However, I think the book works better for someone way younger. It's marked as young adult and the main character is fifteen, but I think it works better for early teens than older teens. There are also several... should I call them mistakes? For example, in the beginning, it is mentioned that the main character's sister is a seer and that her mother knows no ancestor with this gift, but then, throughout the story, we meet a couple of ancestors who are also seers. This is not a big deal as it's not a big part of the story, but I couldnโt help but notice.
As I've said, this book is perfect for young teens who love fantasy. The characters are indeed diverse. There is a hint of a bisexual love triangle in the book, but it is completely clean, the most that happens is a quick brush of lips.
I think I might read the next book in the series but not soon, and I am definitely curious to try the author's adult fantasy book.
