J. Rubino (jrubino) | 307 comments I recently came upon two Sherlock Holmes series from the '80s. "The Mystery of Manor House" is an 8 part series about a young Sherlock Holmes who comes home from school to find his house inhabited by strangers. He moves in with relations and gets involved in a mystery surrounding the new occupants of his old house. Guy Henry is a very credible teenage Holmes. The series can be seen - partially - on Youtube, though E7 is flawed and E8 is not available. There was a novelization of the series, and a followup novel.
"Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson" '70/'80 was a British/Polish production (with credits and the opening dialogue in German) starring Geoffrey Whitehead as Holmes and Donald Pickering as Watson, and Patrick Newell, (who appeared in the Granada episode, The Resident Patient) is Lestrade. Whitehead is an interesting Holmes - adds that touch of humor, good rapport with Pickering, who is also a very good Watson. The episodes themselves are not terribly sophisticated, original stories for the most part except for the one adapted from The Speckled Band. Available on Youtube.

Barbara | 349 comments I watched a couple of the Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson episodes. I never heard of this series, but I did like Whitehead as Holmes, though he did a lot of running around London in that deerstalker.

I can pass comment on the two shows as I have managed to find some online excerpts to watch.

I my opinion, from what I saw of "The Mystery of Manor House" it was really a cheap stage play, badly done too I'm afraid so not one I would watch for another episode.

I can pass comment on "Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson" with Geoffrey Whitehead and Donald Pickering. From what I have been able to watch on line I don't get the right feeling for this version. I find the acting wooden, and for me the main characters don't gel as the visual references don't come together as a pair, for example Watson is too old and tall against Holmes height and age. Mrs Hudson has the worst Scots accent - I'm Scots myself, from Edinburgh and that's one of the worst I've heard. Not one I would watch for another episode.
