Riding the Highways: The Aloha Loop
To Completion

Hawaii has been in my thoughts so I decided to put together a virtual road trip of my first visit to the Big Island.

The Big Island (or Hawai'i) is the largest of the state’s main islands. In fact, it is still growing in land surface due to the active volcanoes found on the island. It is also one of the most unique and ecologically diverse places on the planet, consisting of 4 out of the 5 major climate zones and 8 out of 13 sub-zones. Driving around the island is an incredible adventure that greets you with something different around each curve of the road. We will be following (for the most part) Highway 19 which then turns into Highway 11.

Here's how the challenge works. Read carefully because it has changed a bit.
The number of miles traveled from place to place will be the numbers you use to choose your books. You can mix and match one of the below ways to complete the task but please indicate in each post which option you are using.

1. Starting Point: Hilo

Despite the fact that it’s the largest city on the Big Island, Hilo paces itself to a slow beat. It has a vintage vibe that makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. Be sure to explore Banyan Drive to see the 50 multi-trunked banyan trees that line the road. Then stop at Lili’uokalani Park, a manicured Japanese park overlooking the bay. Try snorkeling at Richardson’s Ocean Park black sand beach, and if you are lucky enough to be in town on a Wednesday or Saturday, stop by the famous Hilo Farmer’s Market for an unbelievable array of tropical delights.

2. Drive 2 Miles to Wailuku River State Park

This small local state park found in the heart of the city boasts a beautiful 80 foot waterfall. Rainbow Falls is a sight that becomes downright dazzling after heavy rains, when the spray shimmers with vivid hues. Further upstream, water pours into a series of pools with such turbulence that they have been dubbed the Boiling Pots. The well-exposed hexagonal columns that line the pools were formed by the slow cooling of basalt lava.
Even further upstream is Peepee Falls, a gorgeous set of three distinct waterfalls that boasts their own swimming holes. But be aware the trail to reach it can be dangerous after rain.

3. Drive 16 Miles to Onomea Bay Scenic Drive Turnoff

This four mile scenic drive on the Hāmākua Coast is a must do! Although it is a regular paved road, at times it is a bit narrow and has several tight curves and one-lane bridges. The drive will take you through a tropical paradise of foliage, streams and small waterfalls. This side of the island receives over 120 inches of rainfall per year, making it a virtual greenhouse of botanical beauties. Stop at the Onomea Sea Arch for incredible views of the bay. The arch stood complete for thousands of years until an earthquake in 1956 caused the top of the arch to collapse.

4. Drive 0.5 Miles Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens

The scenic drive brings you to the entrance of the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens. This 17 acre preserve features more than 2,000 species of plants - a collection believed to be the world’s largest assortment of tropical plants growing in a natural environment. Numerous trails invite visitors to meander past preening parrots, hidden waterfalls, and hushed lily ponds. Nearby is the trail head to the Onomea Bay Donkey Trail. Prior to railroads coming to the island, Onomea Bay was a major port for bringing goods and sugar cane in and out of Hawaii. This trail was used to ferry the goods from the boats by donkey. This short, but very steep 600 foot hike, rewards you with a simply spectacular and extremely photogenic view.

5. Drive 9 Miles to Akaka Falls State Park

Leaving the main highway we take a detour past dense fields of sugarcane to Akaka Falls State Park. A pleasant half-mile uphill hike will take you through a lush rain forest filled with wild orchids, bamboo groves, and draping ferns. But the real star of the park is towering Akaka Falls. This slender cascade plummets 442 feet into a stream-eroded gorge with walls wrapped in lush greenery. This easily accessible waterfall is perhaps the Big Island’s most famous, and once you see it, you will know why.

6. Drive 7 Miles to Umauma Falls

If you want to experience another spectacular waterfall more “up close & personal,” you might be interested in visiting the Umauma Falls Experience. This privately owned venture includes an impressive 9-line zipline course, ATV rides, kayak tours, horseback riding and a chance to swim in the pools created by the 14 plus falls that make up Umauma. It is the perfect place for those who love an adventure.

7. Drive 11 Miles to Magical Creatures Sanctuary

This is such a great organization that a stop to see what they are accomplishing is a must. Magical Creatures is a nonprofit farm animal rescue and sanctuary that was founded in 2018 and is now home to over 85 animals who were saved from slaughter, rescued from neglect, have special needs, or were orphaned or injured in the wild. They offer a two-hour tour where guests have a chance to meet the animals and hear their rescue stories. It’s a fun stop, especially if you have children. They also welcome, and have many opportunities for volunteering.

8. Drive 5 Miles to Laupahoehoe Beach Park

For some dramatic sea views, stop by Laupahoehoe Beach Park and Memorial. This is a rocky beach that offers some spectacular wave crashing activity. The waves are so intense in this harbor that in 1983 the US Army Corps of Engineers built a 60 foot long concrete wave absorber that is quite an interesting structure to check out. The park is also known for a sad bit of history. It is the site of a tragic tsunami that killed 20 students and four teachers in 1946. A monument stands in front of Laupahoehoe Point with the names of those that were lost.

9. Drive 13 Miles to the Hawaiian Vanilla Company

If you are a foodie, this is the place for you!! The Hawaiian Vanilla Company was established in 1998 by the Reddekopp family, making them the first commercial vanilla growers in the US. Their goal was to cultivate the best vanilla in the world and provide the finest vanilla related products. And they have succeeded!! Stop by their gift shop to sample their products. Or better yet, sign up for The French Vanilla Luncheon and Guided Vineyard Tour where you will be served a gourmet “vanilla-inspired” meal, followed by an opportunity to learn about the cultivation process and rich history of growing vanilla. It makes for a very special and unique Hawaiian afternoon.

10. Drive 8 Miles to Kalopa State Recreation Area

A few miles past Paauilo, an old plantation town dating back to Hawaii’s sugarcane era, a turnoff leads to Kalopa State Recreation Area. Nestled on the lower slopes of the volcano Mauna Kea, this lush 615-acre forest reserve is laced with several well-marked hiking trails. A favorite is the Kalopa Nature Trail, a one-hour loop through the heart of a rainforest. The forest has an upper canopy of large, old-growth ohi’a trees and a lush understory of predominantly smaller native forest trees, shrubs, and ferns. About 25 different native species of trees, shrubs, and vines can be viewed along this easy trail.

11. Drive 14 Miles to Waip'o Valley Lookout

To visit Waip'o Valley is to get a glimpse into the Garden of Eden. One mile wide and six miles long, this singularly beautiful spot was so favored by Hawaiian royalty that it is nicknamed the Valley of the Kings. Its splendor is indeed regal! Perpetually green, thanks to streams, waterfalls, and ancient fish ponds, the enchanted rainforest here is so productive that in times of famine its prodigious produce sustained the island’s entire population in ancient times. The road down into the valley is VERY steep; motorists without four-wheel drive are advised to take a shuttle instead. They depart hourly from the Waip'o Valley Lookout, but advance reservations are advised.

12. Drive 22 Miles to Waimea

Let’s head inland to see a completely different part of the island. We are soon passing high-country pastures spotted with grazing cattle and the Hawaiian cowpokes called paniolo. The area around Waimea is definitely cattle country, and during the summer you can attend a rodeo and feast on a gourmet burger made with ingredients from nearby farms. The town sits at an elevation of 3,000 ft on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Measured from its base on the floor of the sea, this active volcano ranks as the world’s highest peak at 13,680 ft. Its pollution-free air is so crystal-clear that its summit is considered the best spot on Earth for stargazing, explaining the no fewer than 13 observatories found there.

13. Drive 21 Miles to Hawi

The peaceful haven of Hāwī, set in the green northern tip of the island, was once the busy hub of North Kohala’s now defunct sugar industry. Today, it is home to a handful of charming art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants set in colorful and lively plantation buildings. The Bamboo Restaurant & Gallery, once voted the best restaurant on the island, is a great stop for a fresh island style meal. Drive to the end of the road to check out another gorgeous valley. Pololu Valley’s black sand beach can be reached via a very steep trail, though hiking during or soon after rain can be dangerous.

14. Drive 18 Miles to Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site

We now head south to the Kohala Coast and just past the small harbor community of Kawaihae, you will find the Puukohola National Historic Site. This is where King Kamehameha I, acting on the advice of a prophet, erected a temple in honor of a war god to ensure victory over his adversaries. Measuring 224 by 100 feet, the heiau was built from rocks and boulders that were fitted together without mortar. On the day it was dedicated, the man who would be king helped fulfill the prophecy by having his principal rival slain as he arrived for the ceremony.

15. Drive 3 Miles to Hapuna State Beach Park

You can’t come to the Big Island without spending some quality time at the beach. Being on the leeward side of the island, the Kohala Coast is sunny and dry, making it home to several of the best beaches to swim, snorkel or just relax in the sun. Hapuna State Beach offers that perfect “sandy beach” experience. But just a mile down the road, located at the #72 telephone pole, is one of my all time favorite places to while away the hours. Beach 69 (at Waialea Bay) is a beautiful beach lined with shady trees for those who can’t handle full sun exposure, and it offers easy access to great snorkeling opportunities.

16. Drive 6 Miles to Puako Petroglyphs

The Puakō Petroglyph Archaelogical Preserve boasts more than 3,000 ancient petroglyphs, or kiʻi pōhaku lava rock carvings etched into stone, dating back to 1200 AD. Although the true meanings of the petroglyphs are unknown, it is generally thought these carvings are records of births and other significant events in the lives of the people who lived on the island long ago. Access can be found at the Mauna Lani Resort, where a sign will point you to the half-mile trail that winds past lava boulders incised with turtles, warriors, fish, and enigmatic spirals. The petroglyphs in and near Puako are some of the oldest and best rock carvings in all of Hawaii.

17. Drive 13 Miles Kiholo Bay Beach Hike

Kiholo Bay is a magical scenic hike that takes you to one of the more unique stretches of coastline on the island. The smooth, obsidian-like lava surrounding the bay contrasts with the brilliant turquoise water in the lagoon. The trail wanders past a gorgeous black sand beach, a flooded lava tube called Queen’s Bath and tide pools that were once an ancient fishpond. Throughout your hike you are sure to see green sea turtles swimming about the lagoon. On occasion you may see one resting on shore, but please keep your distance since they are protected animals in the state of Hawaii.

18. Drive 17 Miles to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park

Continuing south past the Kona Airport, take note of all the many lava fields marked with signs marking the eruption years. You will soon arrive at an intriguing waypoint, the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park. This Hawaiian heritage site features two brilliantly constructed fishponds that show the engineering acuity of Native Hawaiians. With the building of lava stone walls, the ancient people created protected space for fish to grow and breed, supplying them with a rich resource of food.

19. Drive 3 Miles to Kailua-Kona

We are now entering the city of Kailua-Kona, known by most simply as Kona. This historic area is popular for its restaurants, shops, and nightlife. While strolling the downtown area be sure to visit two interesting landmarks on the bayfront: Hulihee Palace was the former residence of Hawaiian royalty, and Mokuaikaua Church, Hawaii’s oldest Christian church. For dinner, walk over to Huggo’s on the Rocks and relax at a table in the sand, while watching an incredible sunset over Kona Bay. 20. Drive 13 Miles to Captain Cook

This area is named after Captain James Cook who lost his life in a skirmish with the natives in 1779. A monument stands in remembrance of his death on the shores of Kealakekua Bay. The waters of the bay itself offer some of the best snorkeling on the island via permitted tours. The area is also known for its numerous coffee farms - many give informative tours of the coffee-making process along with samples of all their different brews. Another interesting stop is St. Benedict’s Painted Church. It’s open to the public and the artwork on the walls and ceiling is really worth seeing.

21. Drive 9 Miles to Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park

This historic park is of great importance to native Hawaiians and makes for a fascinating visit. It is the island’s only remaining “ancient place of refuge.” Until 1819, the protocol of daily life in Hawaii was governed by kapu, a sacred code of rules and prohibitions. Sanctuaries were set aside for defeated warriors and transgressors, who were spared execution and reinstated into society if they managed to reach one of these havens. An informative film is available before entering the grounds of this 180-acre historical park that includes ancient royal fish ponds, a wall fitted with jagged lava, countless wide-eyed tiki idols, and a heiau or temple that once held the remains of 23 chiefs.

22. Drive 24 Miles to Milolii

Milolii is known as one of the oldest fishing villages in Hawaii. Established as a settlement dating back to the early Polynesians, this community has been fishing for generations, nurturing their respective koa (fishing area) and abiding by the kapu, the unwritten rules about where one may and may not fish. The nearby black sands of Ho’okena Beach Park is a popular beach for locals and one of the few beaches on the island where you can obtain a camping permit.

23. Drive 34 Miles to Ka Lae

Leaving the rugged topography of Kona, we enter the Ka’u District. It feels somewhat isolated but astonishingly scenic with rain shrouded mountains, windswept hills, and serene pastures. Keep an eye out for the rare and endangered nene (or Hawaiian goose) along the roadside. Taking the turnoff at South Point Road, we head to the southernmost point in the US. Some historians believe that Hawaii’s first settlers landed here, perhaps as early as 150 AD. Standing on the rocky cliffs, the scenery is stunning. This is also where you will find the trail head to the challenging 5-mile hike to the famous green sands of Papakōlea Beach.

24. Drive 25 Miles to Naalehu

Known as the southernmost town in America, Naalehu is home to the Punalu'u Bakery and Visitor Center. This local gem has oodles of Hawaiian delicacies to sample, but it is best known for its Hawaiian Sweet Bread. Made from a secret, generations-old recipe with locally sourced ingredients, the aroma of it as you walk through the door will take your breath away. Watch the bread being baked, sample the goodies with a freshly brewed cup of Hawaiian coffee, visit the gift shop, and explore the lush four-acre tropical garden. You’ll instantly see why Punalu’u is the most visited bakery in Hawaii and welcomes more than 200,000 visitors from all over the world every year.

25. Drive 9 Miles to Punalu'u Beach Park

This popular beach is one of the region’s best recreation spots. It is the largest black sand beach on the island and easily accessible, making it a great place to go for a quick swim, snorkel, or picnic. It is also a popular spot to encounter green sea turtles basking in the sun on the beach. If you are lucky you might catch a glimpse of the endangered Hawksbill Turtle or Honu’ea foraging in the water. Both species are fully protected under the US Endangered Species Act, so enjoy watching these marvelous creatures, but do not touch or disturb them in any way.

26. Drive 28 Miles to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Established in 1916, this massive park is home to both Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, two of the most active volcanoes in the world. Leaving the visitor center, follow Crater Rim Drive for 11 miles as it encircles Kilauea Caldera. Stop at the two viewing platforms overlooking the caldera. They are open 24 hours a day, so come by at night for an especially dramatic display of red-hot magna. Be sure to hike Devastation Trail to see the once forested area destroyed in the 1959 eruption. Then walk through Thurston Lava Tube, where thick tree ferns nearly engulf this tunnel created from an ancient flow.

27. Drive 38 Miles Roundtrip on Chain of Craters Road

Another must-do drive in the park is the Chain of Craters Road, which reveals the true youth of the Big Island and the reality that the island is still being formed. Descending 3,700 feet to the coast, you drive through lava fields that present many interesting hikes and breathtaking vistas. Of particular interest is the 1.5 round trip hike to the Pu'u Loa Petroglyphs, the largest petroglyph field in the state. The drive ends where lava covered 10 miles of the road in 1986. Here you will find the Hōlei Sea Arch, a 90 ft. high lava rock formation that extends from the sea cliffs into the ocean. This formation is quite beautiful, but has a limited life span. In future years, the arch will eventually crumble into the sea.

28. Drive 32 Miles to Pahoa Lava Zone Museum

In 2018, a new eruption of Kīlauea volcano changed the island forever. From May through August, large lava flows covered land in the Puna District, destroying over 700 homes and devastating residential areas (map above). One of my favorite Big Island stops, the Kapoho Tide Pools, no longer exists, buried beneath tons of new lava. The national park’s Jagger Museum was another loss due to earthquake activity during the eruption and is now permanently closed. But luckily, most of its exhibits were saved and can now be seen in the Pahoa Lava Zone Museum, located in the heart of historic Pahoa Village. This museum features unique volcanic information you won’t find anywhere else in the world, including footage from the 2018 eruption. They also have information on two guided drives you can take in the Puna District to view area attractions and lava flows from the 2018 eruption.
