In this quite quick read, Eli remembers the story his “uncle” Poxl told him of his work during WW2 as a Jewish pilot in the RAF, which Poxl wrote a memoir about. The retelling begins with Poxl living in his home in Prague before the outbreak of WW2, as well as the months he spent in Rotterdam before finally moving to England, where we see information about his training and flights in great detail. It is clear that there is something strange about Poxl’s memoir, but it is only towards the end of reading this book that we understand what it is. I found that I enjoyed this book more and more as it went on, and I liked how the ending was resolved. Despite this, I never felt truly connected with the characters, or as invested in either Eli or Poxl’s stories as I would have liked.
