Ian (ianhsutherland) | 2 comments Invasion of Privacy (A Brody Taylor Thriller, #1) by Ian Sutherland

I’d like to nominate my mystery thriller novel entitled “Invasion of Privacy”.

WHAT IF YOUR HOME WAS SECRETLY BEING STREAMED ONLINE? WHAT IF THOUSANDS OF INTERNET VOYEURS WATCHED YOU ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT? WHAT IF ONE OF THE WATCHERS WAS A SERIAL KILLER, LEARNING YOUR INTIMATE SECRETS IN ORDER TO LURE YOU TO AN UNWITTING DEATH?

Beautiful young student cellist Anna Parker is found dead in a corporate meeting room after attending a fake orchestra audition. Detective Inspector Jenny Price investigates, baffled by how the killer knew his victim's innermost desires.

Does the answer lie in a website that broadcasts webcam feeds from inside homes, offices and shops? Expert security consultant Brody Taylor, hired to test the site’s cyber-defences by its anonymous owner, begins to suspect so.

Thrown together, can Brody and Jenny find a way to bring down the site and track down the killer before he lures his next unsuspecting victim? But can Jenny trust the charming but mysterious security consultant?

Some quotes from existing reviews on Amazon and Goodreads:

“If the producers of Homeland or 24 are looking for the next, and very relevant, topical and addictive series, look no further.”

“Great writing, believable characters building up to a thrilling climax, with an underlying theme of universal concern. Highly recommend.”

“Brilliant. If you enjoy fast paced, intelligent detective thrillers, make this your next read.”

“"Fans of paranoid conspiracy theory thrillers will find Invasion of Privacy delivers"

The book has 34 reviews on Amazon.co.uk, averaging 4.8 stars; 12 reviews on Amazon.com averaging 4.4 stars; and 11 revews/46 ratings on Goodreads averaging 4.37 stars. Its release date was August 16th, 2014.

This is my debut novel and will become a series of thrillers featuring Brody and Jenny. I would be eternally grateful to win this month’s contest and gain feedback from such a wide range of readers. Thank you for considering me!

I'd like to nominate my debut novel, PLAYED TO DEATH, a PBS-style mystery:

A body in a rundown Opera House.
Simmering resentment in a small Virginia coastal town.
A missing manuscript.
A dark family secret.

Still suffering nightmares from his last case, former FBI agent-turned crime consultant Scott Drayco considers retiring from crime solving altogether.

Then a former client bequeaths Drayco a rundown Opera House in a Virginia seaside town—complete with a body inside, a mysterious "G" carved into the man's chest.

To solve the murder, Drayco must dodge the seductive wife of a town councilman, a wary sheriff, and hostility over coastal development before the tensions explode into more violence and he becomes the next victim.

This book has 15 reviews on Amazon (with an average 4.7) stars) and 10 on Goodreads (avg. 4.2), but more are humbly and gratefully welcome. If chosen as this month's winner, I look forward to hearing your feedback! Thanks for letting me be a part of this group and for this opportunity.

Publication note: This novel is the first in a new series, with the sequel coming out in April!

Charles Vrooman (greenpower) | 73 comments Green Power by Charles Vrooman
I would like to nominate my environmental thriller, “Green Power”, for EBM BOTM.

Following the Three Mile Island accident and the deadly Chernobyl disaster, the safety of nuclear power frightened everyone. This prevailing attitude encouraged the protagonist (Dr. Ray Pendleton) in the thriller novel, Green Power, to lead a demonstration to close down Rancho Seco Nuclear Power Plant. Following the shutdown of this power plant, the antagonist (Dirk Hendrickson) loses his job as head of security. Dirk convinces two of his fellow Delta Valley Militiamen to physically attack Ray. Ray survives the beating and is motivated to set up methane digesters as an alternative source of electrical power for Lodi dairies.
Dirk’s continued attacks on the professor and his projects results in a death threatening epidemic pointing to one of Ray’s methane lagoons as the cause. The infected patients are admitted to UC Davis Medical Center. Linda McCord, a lab tech at the hospital and former microbiology student of Dr. Pendleton, works with Ray to prove that the methane power source is not the cause of this spreading disease. Both Ray and Linda develop a romantic relationship while working together. Linda is devastated when Ray comes down with a serious infection caused by the same type of bacterium responsible for the epidemic.

Reviews:
Johhny Electriglide of the Evirolink Forum:
Finished it today, and give it a thumbs up! It has elements of an action thriller, environmental thriller, romance novel, and tear jerker in one spot. Almost historical because almost all of it takes place in 1989, with a short chapter at the end bringing us up to the present. Well done, and recommended reading for those who like to read a mix of science fact, action and romance, and a little 1980s history in dramatic fiction. Well developed characters, and even though we know the answers to parts of the medical thriller and crime drama, it is fun to have the various characters find the answers.
There are a few points of slight errors, but nothing serious enough to take away from a great reading book. The expertise of the microbiology science more than made up for that. Five Stars!

Sam Shove from Goodreads:
Just finished this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. The action sequences and characters are well written and the technical sections are easy to read and understand. It raises some interesting questions about the use of alternative renewable energy supplies (in the case the small scale use of methane for energy production) instead of larger scale projects and the role of the media in informing and thus determining the public perception of such schemes. The effects of public demonstrations are also touched upon with both sides using these, in one instance to show support for the use of alternative energy and in the other against them. A very interesting and thought provoking read.

Gabriel Boutros | 9 comments I would like to nominate my courtroom drama, The Guilty:

Robert Bratt is a veteran defense attorney whose faith in the justice system, and the role he plays in it, wavers when his daughter’s best friend is raped and the rapist is acquitted. The rapist’s lawyer twisted the victim’s testimony around to make her look like she was the aggressor, and Bratt knows this is exactly what he would have done in his place. But his daughter hates all lawyers now, including him, and this causes him to question the way he practices his chosen profession and the violent people he represents. Then, Jennifer Campbell, a devoutly religious woman, hires him to defend her son, Marlon Small, who is accused of a brutal double-murder. Small has an air-tight alibi but, despite Campbell’s protestations, Bratt’s instincts tell him it may be too good to be true. But Bratt’s drive to succeed, combined with his sympathy for the heartbroken mother, push him to defend the young man anyway. Can he continue to turn a blind eye to what his client might have done, and manipulate the truth as he so often has in the past, all in order to defend "The Guilty?"
An intense, behind the scenes look at defending an accused killer, and the things a lawyer has to do when he wants to win at all costs.

When people in the town begin to disappear, and Katie's own home is attacked by a terrifying creature, Katie and her grandmother return to Russia to find answers.

Vanessa Wester I would like to nominate my debut novel, HYBRID.

Hybrid (The Evolution Trilogy, #1) by Vanessa Wester Hybrid

Caitlin Chance hopes that university life will open many doors. New friends, her own digs, and an enriched learning environment. It's what she needed to get on with her life. When she meets Steven Thorn during Fresher's week she has no idea that her future is on a different kind of trajectory. The attraction they share is instant and it is no surprise that they find themselves drawn to one another.

However, Steven has a secret past that is destined to reveal itself. Soon he will become a stranger to everyone and his new life in Brazil will begin. People like him are not meant to live amongst normal humans. The wheels are set in motion for his radical upheaval.

But first love is a powerful thing, and the connection forged between Caitlin and Steven is not easily broken.

The impossible is only the beginning...

Vanessa Wester's debut novel takes you from the University of Southampton to the depths of the Amazon jungle. An imaginary citadel is waiting to be discovered full of interesting characters, traditions and cultures. There are so many twists and details you will not be able to put this book down.

*****

"Although the author is inspired by novels in the same genre there is nothing wrong in that - most of us take inspiration from one source or another. Vanessa Wester has clearly taken inspiration from her own life and from her imagination. She has clearly spent time creating the imaginary citadel and understands its geography and customs which are made clear to the reader. The story-line flows smoothly... I always think there must be something to recommend a book which you would not normally select."
Christine Thompson, Gibraltar Chronicle
Full review at theevolutiontrilogy.blogspot.com

"When you first start getting into the story you automatically think Vampires, but as you discover more, Vampires is not the correct term for Steven's new family... It's well worth the read and as I got to the end I was frantically swiping my kindle screen looking for more as I wanted to know what happened next. I will definitely be reading the next book and would highly recommend it."
Orchard Book Club

"Not usually the kind of book I like to read, although I was a big fan of Anne Rice in my youth. The unexpected twist in the tale made for compulsive reading, literally forcing you to discover what happens next. This story had it all, brilliantly written, loads of interesting characters, mystery, and romance with an unsettling undercurrent of tension. I cannot wait to read the rest of the trilogy!"
A Dawes

'This is a very exciting read. Would appeal to the Twilight fan-base, but has definitely put its own twist on the genre. A very well constructed piece, all the more impressive for being a debut novel.'
Adam

"This is definitely not another vampire tale. You are left, at the end, with lots of questions, there are so many ways the characters could go! I look forward to the next book and the continuing tale of Steven and Caitlin, his mother Emily and the rest of the "family" in the Amazon."
Susan

*~HYBRID has some scenes of an adult nature. It may be considered unsuitable for younger readers~*

*****

Find out what happens next in COMPLICATIONS; and RETURN. You can also find out more about Steven's mother in the prequel, EMILY.

"I fell in love with Caitlin and Steven, the main characters in Hybrid, joined in on their adventures in Complications, and was rewarded with a finale that tied up all of the details and loose ends in Return book 3... A very satisfying ending! I highly recommend this trilogy."
Susan

"A great set of books. A must read for all. Imaginative story somehow believable. I would like to visit the community myself."
Lovely Lane

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) I would like to nominate my book, Imperfect Strangers

Imperfect Strangers by David M. Staniforth

4.5 stars on Amazon with 44 reviews

How well do you know the people you see every day?

Sally hardly knows Keith. They're practically strangers until the day she smiles at him.

Would you smile so readily if you risked losing your friends?
Would you smile so readily if you risked losing your life?

Unfortunately, you can’t begin to know a person until you let them in.

Imperfect Strangers: A psychological thriller that simmers to a dark and dramatic climax.

Here’s a taste of other readers’ thoughts on the book:

“Imperfect Strangers is an original story that grabbed me and didn’t let go even after the last page was read. I finished the book a fortnight ago and the characters and plot are still playing around in my head.”

“I loved this book - it was tense and tightly written with characters that really leapt off the page, fully rounded and believable.”

“A well-paced page turner with excellent characterisation and realistic dialogue. One of those rare books that is difficult to put down. Highly recommended.”

“A very well written psychological thriller that takes you with it and holds your interest until the very last word in the book…”

I would like to add Niko, book 1 of The Outsider Chronicles. It's a YA dystopia featuring a badass girl with a baseball bat, and set in a world of acid rain and flesh eating monsters.

It currently has 24 reviews on Amazon, 18 of which are 5 stars.

EXCERPT

"She was not following the script long established between Slithers and humans. She was supposed to be running, perhaps while screaming ineffectively, and it was supposed to pursue her in a glorious chase."
