On the Southern Literary Trail discussion

The Southern Literary Trail is now accepting nominations for books that the group will be reading in May 2023.

We will consider books with a southern literary theme that have not been read by the group in the last 24 months. Per our recently revised criteria, the two categories are books originally published in or before 1990 or those published after 1990. You may make one nomination in each category. Authors may not nominate their own works. Please post your nominations below and specify which category you are nominating it for.

Nominations will stay open for one week or until we receive six nominations in each category. Voting will take place in the first ten days of next month.

For Post-1990, I’d like to nominate Salvage This World which is expected to be released April 25th. I’m on a pre-hold at my library. If the publish date gets pushed out, feel free to delete my nomination.

Why not? We've read and enjoyed every other book that Michael Farris Smith has written. I'm sure it will be good.

I'm going to tentatively allow Kinfolks: The Wilgus Stories because it looks interesting but it appears to be out of print and of limited availability. Please check sources other than Amazon to see if there are affordable copies available.

For Pre 1990 I am going to nominate The Color Purple by Alice Walker.

I have never read this and think I should and only know that it was a movie in the 80's but I didn't see that either. And this book is surprisingly not on our shelf?!?!?

For Post 1990 I will ask Tom what he wants to do with this one:
Between the Flowers by Harriette Simpson Arnow.

The group has read two of her works already (sadly I've not gotten to them yet) but this was her second novel written in the 1930's but not published until 1999.

Sorry Tom. I always check my library and if they have it then I think that other places will too. Let me check a couple places check and I will report back.
