Justin (rockstarintraining) A thread to discuss the NPR Top 100 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Books list.

I hate lists like these because they clump series together. I've only read the first three volumes of Sandman (included in my count) and I'm on the fourth A Song of Ice and Fire book (included the first three in my count). And the first three Dark Tower books.

I have read 31 of these. Some are indicating the whole series - which makes sense.

message 4: by Justin (new)

Justin (rockstarintraining) Yeah, they cheated a little bit on this one, but I like the list. I have counted up how many I've read, but many of them are collecting dust on my bookshelf right now.

message 5: by Brittney (new)

Brittney (ladylunabee) | 33 comments I've read 14, which actually shocks me because I don't usually read a lot of science fiction or fantasy books. The ones that I have read on that list I really liked, though.

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ (heyitsthemj) There's a few more on this list that are on my TBR list but I'm currently in a reading block. I read so many books between Jan and Feb that I'm almost burned out. There's some I really need to get finished just so they're done and out of the way.

message 7: by RachelvlehcaR (new)

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 149 comments I have read 29 and working on a few at this time. Thanks for adding it. :)

ally ¯\(ツ)/¯ (allykennedy) | 42 comments I'm at 12. Although this list and my TBR are pretty close to the same thing :)

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Once again, I've only read 3. But I have listened to the audiobook for World War Z, so I'm calling it 3.5 (the audiobook is abridged, I think).

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm at 23 not counting the series ones I haven't finished. However, there are 2 series where I've read the first book and have no intention of reading anymore.

Valerie (darthval) | 45 comments 35. I think my dork may be showing a bit.

Surprised by some that made the list and some that did not.

Magician: Apprentice is on the list . . . which makes me very happy! Great series!

Agreed. I read this so long ago that I've been considering revisiting it. However, there are still so many books unread and so few years to do so in my mortal little life.

I started over recently because I read the first 4 about a decade ago. I am now up to book 9 and plan to work through all 30 of them!

message 15: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (darthval) | 45 comments I only ever made it through the first four. I always meant to get back to it, but it I plan to do so, I will need to revisit and refresh.

message 16: by RachelvlehcaR (new)

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 149 comments It would be fun to see what our number is in the beginning of the year then how much we have read at the end of the year. :)

Ghost in the Stacks 20 for me

message 18: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (darthval) | 45 comments I am already slated to read 5 more this year for another group.

message 19: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 92 comments I like this list! I've only read 20 but I'd like to read them all.

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ (heyitsthemj) Theres 17 books, two re-reads, and Gaiman's Sandman I want to read/finish reading on the list this year.

I have quite a few already on my reading challenge list and one of them I'm already reading.

I am at 36 now - at least I will be once I finish Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - only 20 pages left. Adding 5 more this year feels good! Several more are on my TBR.

Another list check in for 2016 - I am now up to 39! However, when checking this list I swear there were mere than 3 new ones for this year, so I may have counted wrong last year.

Up to 43 after 2017.

And this is weird - look at the time stamp on the message before this. I randomly opened this thread to check where I stand and I opened it exactly one year later to the minute from my last post! Freaky!

message 24: by Jason (new)

Jason | 1 comments I have only ready 27 from this list, but there are several on my TBR list and some of those that I need to try to get around to soon, like Neuromancer and Watchmen.

message 25: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (darthval) | 45 comments I am up to 60 as 2017 draws to a close.

Up to 55 now!

message 31: by Eileen (new)

Eileen | 151 comments I've read 33 of these but I have a few series (Outlander) that I need to finish and a few that I want to start.

message 32: by Jessica-sim (new)

Jessica-sim 20 for me. For those of you who also like to use the listchallenges-website: https://www.listchallenges.com/npr-to...

But be careful when counting as the list author here added all the books in a series and the NPR list only one per series, so score yourself wisely.

Interesting! Thanks for the link.

And, it is true what you said, as long as I have read the first book of a series listed, I tend to count it. You would have to read a lot of books to complete some of these series!

If I use this - I get 72 out of 306. It is interesting that some of them that are a series (I noticed Rama and Old Man's War) only include the first book.

message 34: by Eileen (new)

Eileen | 151 comments Okay, if I use the list challenge I have 132/306 because I haven't finished all the series. But I'm at 43%. I've got a fair bit of work to do, including rereading some of these!

message 35: by Liane (new)

Liane | 70 comments I am 83/306 in the comprehensive list. I can’t believe I read that many Xanth books way back when (pre-kids/marriage/...), but having read one a couple years ago, I doubt I will be able to read any more of those.

message 36: by Tara (new)

Tara | 7 comments Poor showing--only 21/306, but I do own a handful of additional books, that once read, would bring my total to 35. I had intended for 2021 to be a year to read more science fiction, so this list will be an excellent jumping off point.

message 37: by Carol (last edited Mar 01, 2021 12:00PM) (new)

Carol | 59 comments 16 for sure of the NPR Top 100 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Books. There are some which I may have read when I was a kid but don't remember, and some which I may have read and seen the movie or (more likely) just saw the movie.

Tek | 11 comments 17...but im counting series ive read at least one book from.

message 41: by Liane (new)

Liane | 70 comments I was at 61 as of end of 2021 on this list. I wish I’d posted last year as I am sure I made some progress. I think I prefer the abbreviated list to give more room for trying new authors. If an author appeals, reading the series/their library is a natural progression and can be joyful.

message 42: by Jessica-sim (new)

Jessica-sim Oh fun, I didn’t yet go and update my standing on our various lists! With this one I made good progress. I read my way through the Dune saga and through the Shanarra Chronicles by Terry Brooks. Those were the very first books of Terry Brooks that I ever read, I don’t know why I was always avoiding him!

message 43: by Liane (new)

Liane | 70 comments I loved the Dune saga and have yet to get to Terry Brooks. I love that there are still series out there for me to explore! Sci fi/fantasy is my fav genre so this one is extra fun for mw.
