Cheryl (cherylllr) Bucket Lists!

Or any schemes for life experiences, travels, accomplishments, whether or not you they're on a 'do before I die' plan.

I'm sure we all have things we fantasize about that are unlikely to actually get done. I'm more interested in talking about things we have actually done, and whether our expectations were met, whether it was worth it.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I ask because the reason I'm late with the QotW this week is because, at the last minute, I decided to add a couple of days to my road trip and see some attractions. They were most definitely not worth it. I now doubt the validity of the remaining items on my list.

Maybe someone here can advise me on the two most-realizable dreams I have left.

1. I'd like to visit Pennsylvania Dutch country and actually see some of the history and culture in person. But probably it's too touristy? Maybe there's a better choice of a place to visit to learn more directly about Amish, Mennonite, or Quaker peoples?

2. I'd like to visit Poughkeepsie. Not only is it a name that used to come up in novels with a fair bit of regularly, and a neat name, but it looks like an appealing town to just hang out in for awhile, visit museums, coffee shops, etc. And the library addition looks gorgeous, at least as seen in photos taken at dusk: https://www.thepalombogroup.com/portf...

Cheryl (cherylllr) Maybe, too, you know of a story about a character with a bucket list. Seems like a good premise for a Time Travel novel, as they would keep trying until they'd gotten their whole list done.... ;)

Or maybe one of your goals is to finally finish Moby Dick, War and Peace, or Joyce's Ulysses.... Or you did, and were glad that you did, or were let down.

Lizz Taylor | 218 comments For Cheryl:
1) Pennsylvania Dutch Country is not too touristy. We find it a great place to take friends and visitors for the day. There is the Shady Maple all you can eat buffet that is a tourist spot that can get crowded. The Strausburg railroad is fun. It is also close enough to Hershey for the gardens and park there as well. It is a nice area to visit.

2) I can't speak for Poughkeepsie but I have friends who go there and enjoy it. That library sounds amazing.

For me:
1) I want to take my mom to England. It has been a dream to go there together since I was in high school. I have been there with my dad and with my son but for one reason or another my mother has never been there.

2) I would love to to see the Northern Lights. I have dreamed about going to Iceland and seeing them there.

Love the idea of a time travel novel that has a character with a bucket list.

I read War and Peace and Count of Monte Christo. Those were on my list to tackle.

I've wanted to go to the National Comedy Center for several years. It is on my way to/from Utica, NY, but timing just never works out right for me to stop. This year I'm making a point to stop there.

A few bucket list items that I hope someday to make come true:
I want to fly in an open cockpit airplane.
I want to have a pie fight.

Lizz Taylor | 218 comments Samantha please don't have a pie fight in the open cockpit of an airplane! LOL I hope you make it to the National Comedy Center this year.

Glynn | 342 comments I want to see the total solar eclipse coming in 2024. I missed it in 2017.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ooh... love the choices, y'all!
(And the rec's, thank you.)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I just asked my 27 yo son and he says he wants to do something creative irl, but doesn't know what. "Clay, woodworking, something physical, but what would fit in our lifestyle...." He's got a point, as we're renters in a small home, but surely there's something he could do.

I'd like to learn to crochet my own hats and mittens. But I took a class once and I just wasn't coordinated, or patient, enough.

Cheryl (cherylllr) More rec's please! Especially, are there any books that you felt too intimidating for too long, finally read, and loved?

message 11: by Lizz (new)

Lizz Taylor | 218 comments I read three books last year that were classics on my bucket list. I loved Count of Monte Cristo and Gone with the Wind. I did struggle a bit with War and Peace.

message 12: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Cool! It does seem like a lot of people do recommend The Count Of Monte Cristo.

Lizz Taylor | 218 comments It was my ex-husband's he had left behind. After I finished I told texted him that he could have it back now. LOL
