NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11071 comments This is a smart and funny book about the intricacies of high school friendship, social hierarchies, elections, competition, gay relationships, loyalty, forgiveness and more. Liz Lighty got into a great college, but she didn't get all the scholarship money she needs. She learns of one more local scholarship that would make all the difference. The trouble is, she has to do the unthinkable and run for prom queen. She doesn't think a clumsy black girl with anxiety issues has a chance in this small town school (not to mention she's gay.)

The writing is warm, funny, and goes to places I didn't expect. If the book wasn't a funny YA romance with a happy ending, you might mistake it for literary fiction. The relationship build up and first date was very cute. I loved the dialogue. The friendship relationships dealt with some painful issues, which added depth to the book. Some of the characters were well developed, but not all. The mean queen bee character fit all the stereotypes, though her pretty little followers had some unexpected layers.

This isn't the disability rep book I was expecting for a prompt, (the disabled character is in a small role), but I had a lot of fun reading this book. My smile was almost as big as the one on the cover at times.
