How does it work?

For each comment you make, you may take away two points from a character you dislike and give the two points to a character you like. You may not make more than one comment in a row.

Each time a character reaches zero points, they will be kicked out of the game. At the end, three characters will remain, and based on how many points they have, they will be awarded either first, second, or third place.

Note: I understand that F&F members' views concerning this book series may differ. If you feel personally convicted against Harry Potter, I would encourage you to stand by your convictions and pass this game (you have many other options, though!).

After Round 1 is finished, there will be a Round 2 with different characters! ;)

Ron is such an idiot! He's just as rude as Draco was, and he literally bullied Hermione, not only in the first book, but also all throughout when they were older. Then he threw a fit and left them both when they were searching for the Horcruxes, which literally put all their lives in danger. I don't like him.

He wasn't that bad. And if he was nice, do you really think Voldemort would've trusted him? Even if Snape told him he was just being "fake nice," Voldemort would've been suspicious and think that Snape might be getting too comfortable at Hogwarts w/ Dumbledore. He needed to be mean for his act.

@Z.C. I also don't like how scared he made Neville, but other than that, you can't deny how much he protected Harry and how much he did for Dumbledore.

Plus the fact that he had no one to live for after Lily died. His own parents were abusive, he was ridiculed by the Mauraders all his days at school, and he knew the Deatheaters weren't any good. I would say that even Dumbledore used him, and in the end, the only reward Snape got was death.

Eh hem. Feeling sorry for someone does not mean that all the wrong they did counts for nothing. He was not just pretending to be mean--he really hated Harry, only seeing his father in him. He was a bully to children, especially Harry. I recognize he did a good thing, but he was not a good person. Imo, of course.😉

In my opinion, if he only saw his father in Harry, he wouldn't have saved his life in the first book. And I know that Harry does look like his dad, so it must've reminded Snape of James all the time, but even then, he could've been MUCH worse to Harry or even flat-out refused Dumbledore's request to help him.

@Z.C. I didn't read your con list, but I appreciate the effort you put into making it XD

@Sharon, I will agree that his actions are not good. One of the things I love about him as a character (getting serious here, sorry haha) is that he's so realistic. He does terrible things that are the direct consequence of terrible choices, but he also follows through on commitments he's made in an attempt at redemption. I love this character especially as a Christian for a lot of reasons, but one of which is that I think he's a great example of someone who is difficult to love but is ultimately still deserving of it. Obviously he's fictional so there's no real morality attached to this thought, but it's definitely one I have often haha. Basically, I think the guy just needed a hug lol - he had no one in his corner, even Minerva and Flitwick doubted him at the end, but he kept fighting for the good in spite of whatever he wanted for himself (which I'd say is a virtue). What would his life had looked like if someone had been there for him? I'm going to cut myself off now, because I could talk about this forever and y'all aren't here to read a thesis XD I'm so sorry this is so long, yeesh

If I remember right, he only helped Dumbledore to get back at Voldemort for killing Lily. To me, every good thing he did was to get back at Voldemort for killing Lily. I don't believe he cared about anyone but himself and his infatuation with Lily. 🤷‍♀️

I think he was in a lot of pain. And if he really wanted to "get back" at Voldemort, he wouldn't have done the way he did. He genuinely cared about Dumbledore. Snape spent months trying to heal Dumbledore's hand and brewing potions to help Lupin, and put himself in front of the kids when Lupin turned into a werewolf. I don't think spite could've ever prompted him to do any of that.

I mean, it's hard to know his motivation in its entirety because he's not the main character. For me, I think that it's unlikely he'd only have Lily's death as his motivation after so long. I'm sure that was his initial motivator (which I think is a fair one), but also he was young at that time - he chose then to side with Dumbledore because of Lily's death, but as time went on I feel safe assuming that other things would have factored into his decision to stay with Dumbledore. And again, I'm with you the point that he's not a good person, but clearly he has the potential for good in him. Lily was the only friend he ever had, and if he was willing to do what he did for her, he could have probably done even more. (I'm thoroughly enjoying this discussion, so thanks to all! I just feel too strongly about this character haha And to save you the trouble I call myself out for basing some of my thoughts on non-canon suppositions :P)

Yeah, I do agree that the choices he makes are the choices he makes. Every character has to pay for their own decisions, and I think that Snape paid his part in full and then some. James was extremely cruel to Severus, but he still got the girl and fun friends and love and a family. I do think he changed for the better later on, but no one ever talks about how much they hate James and that sort of thing, you know? Why is that, when he got so much and Severus got nearly nothing?
