Happy Reading! Or sleeping, whichever is happening on your end of the world! :)

message 9: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Thank you and Good Morning! It‘s 9:30am here now. I woke up at 6am and have listened to my audiobook. Unfortunately I nodded off several times, so I am not re-listening to the last hour of audio… 😂

message 10: by Cathy (last edited Jul 22, 2023 12:38AM) (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments The state of my Reverse Readathon Relay, now replaced by the actual actual readathon:

- Comics/graphic novels:
Fables, Band 14 - Das große Fables-Crossover — replaced by Dune: Die Graphic Novel, Buch 1, currently reading.

- Shorts/Novelettes/Novellas:
A Prayer for the Crown-ShyFalling Bodies — probably replacing with The Long Game.

- Audio:
Troy: The Siege of Troy Retold — replaced by A Closed and Common Orbit. I am about 4 hours into this one.

- ebook / novels:
The Kaiju Preservation Society: Shortlisted for the 2023 Hugo Award for Best Novel — replacing with Legends & Lattes, not started yet.

Kate | 643 comments Good morning Cathy! lol to re-listening! That's why I can't do audiobooks, I'm forever having to go back over passages!
Enjoy the day.

message 12: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Thanks, Kate, you, too!

Opening Event Survey:

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
Germany, 30km south of Stuttgart.

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
All of them…

3) Which snacks are you most looking forward to?
Haven‘t prepared any. Maybe potatoes and sour cream later or some tomatoes with mozarella.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
I am single, work fulltime, try to watch less TV and am in the process of letting most of my streaming services run out, so I can read even more than I already do. I just got an ebike, so exploring the countryside with it takes away from reading—I don‘t dare yet to ride and liste to audio at the same time. I like going on walks with a friend and her funny chihuahua/terrier mix. I would love to have cats again and get a dog, but it wouldn‘t be fair for them to be alone all day, while I am at work. Although I regularly work from home now for at least 2 days a week...

5) What are your goals for this readathon?
Read the things on my readathon TBR pile. And if I don‘t manage that, it‘s fine, too.

message 13: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Well, that plan to meet a friend for breakfast and a walk turned into a full day thing with cocktails and pizza etc. So the readathon has been a non-event until now. Bottom line so far: about 4 hours auf audiobook, that was it. I‘ll be reading now until the end of the readathon, but it’s obviously a lot less than I had planned!

message 14: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 1654 comments Mod
A friend stopped, so I started late too. Will you read on, do an extra lap to kinda makeup some time? I almost always do an extra lap as I am so high on books, friends, and caffeine.

message 15: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments I will definitely read on and spend tomorrow on my delayed readathon. Depends on the weather and my friends, they might have more plans for tomorrow and I decided at some point in my life that friends come first… 😏

message 16: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Hour 20 Reading Sprint:
- So far I listened to about 5 hours of A Closed and Common Orbit,
- I finished The Long Game (28 pages) and
- I am 35 pages into Just Out of Jupiter's Reach (45 pages).

message 17: by Cathy (last edited Jul 22, 2023 03:30PM) (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments - The Long Game (Far Reaches) 28 pages — finished
- Just Out of Jupiter's Reach (Far Reaches) 45 pages — finished
- Slow Time Between the Stars (Far Reaches) 28 pages — finished

It‘s past midnight here, no eating, but I just had a Scotch… 😏
Done with my various planned short stories, I will now delve into my recent library hold for the last two hours: Legends & Lattes

I plan to continue through as much of my Sunday as I can manage.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 1435 comments Ive heard good things about Legends and Lattes, let me know how it is

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* wrote: "Ive heard good things about Legends and Lattes, let me know how it is"

I‘ve read the first 4 chapters. So far, so good. Building up to be a fun romp. Reminds me a little of T. Kingfisher.

message 20: by Cathy (last edited Jul 23, 2023 11:06AM) (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments During the last sprint hour I read 40-odd pages of Legends & Lattes and listened to another 25 minutes of A Closed and Common Orbit, whilst getting ready for bed… 😏

Dewey's Reverse Readathon Closing Survey 2023
How many books did you read during this readathon? Did you have any favorites?
I listened to my audio, read 3 short stories and started a novel. They were all pretty good.

How many books did you finish? The three short stories.

Did you accomplish your goals for this readathon?
Not really. I only managed a few hours of reading, as my day did not go as planned.

How did your snacks and meals work out? Are there things you would change about the food and beverages side of your readathon for next time?
I didn‘t actually get to cook or prepare anything, as I ended up eating outside. I don’t usually plan anything different for the readathon.

Did you enjoy this readathon? What was the most successful part of your readathon? What would you change for next time?
I enjoyed the last six hours, when I actually got to focus on the readathon. The next readathon is going to be towards the end of the year, right? The likelihood that I will be out all day then is slim, so no changes.

Will you be continuing your readathon reading past the end of our official readathon?
Yes, I will. Unless I get kidnapped again by the same people to go to a lake and chill or go on an ebike tour… 😏

In total:
- read 166 pages
- audio 5 hours and 5 minutes

Hopefully more pages next time!

message 21: by Cathy (new)

Saturday (times are EST)
02.00 — 06.00: Asleep! 😊
06.00 — 09.00: listening to audio of A Closed and Common Orbit in bed, nodded off a few times…
09.00 — 10.00: re-listening, reading coffee, getting ready to meet my friend…
10.00 — 18.00: meeting a friend, walkies, breakfast, cocktails, pizza, no reading. That went out of hand! 😂🤷‍♀️

Once I wake up, I will continue reading throughout Sunday… fingers crossed.

@Susy, yes, planning to be back in October! Do we know the date already?

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments The week before the readathon. Maybe a relay as a ramp-up?

currently reading:
- Saint Death's Daughter, ebook, fantasy, DNF at 46%!
- Boyfriend Material, ebook, library, romance, replaced with the ebook ARC of System Collapse
- Mammoths at the Gate (Singing Hills #4), audio, replaced with Deceiver
- Besserwissen mit dem Besserwisser, paper, nonfiction, in-between palate cleanser

And, again, I will be out and about for a large part of Saturday. It‘s probably going to be more of a 24in48 readathon for me!

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Pre-Readathon Challenge: Time
This what I have read and what applies, since the challenge has been posted:

Past:
- stretching it a little, but this is set in the past of the actual trilogy: The Wilful Princess and the Piebald Prince
- started, but abandoned, as it didn‘t work for me as audio: Hild (7th cent. Britain)
Present: Starter Villain
Future:

Level 2
In Time: Shipwrecked!: Diving for Hidden Time Capsules on the Ocean Floor
Out of Time:

Aw sorry to hear that but it happens! I still post on Sundays so will check in with you then if you have updated

message 34: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments I‘m in Germany, so the time shift helps a bit. The readathon starts at 2pm on Saturday for me and goes till 2pm on Sunday. I will definitely sleep through the night, too old and too tired to stay up… 😝
But still, if I get up relatively early on Sunday, I can get in several hours of reading. I‘ll just keep social media and review writing for Sunday afternoon.

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Back from my day out, it‘s midnight here… Snatched a few words of my current ebook here or there. So far only 20 pages read and 38 minutes listened to. But another 14 hours left. Ok, soon I will need to sleep for a few hours… 😏

message 37: by Susy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments My reply to the Hour 12 libraries prompt:

I‘m in Germany, libraries here are not so interconnected. I live in a small town with an equally small library and with very few books that I really want to read. I got a library card from the next town over. That library has a libby account, which gives me some pretty good choices. And today, instead of actually reading, I went to have a look at this very modern library in Stuttgart…

https://cathysreadingbonanza.wordpres...

Looks great, but it‘s to far to go there on a whim. I am pretty happy with my current libby access.

message 42: by Cathy (last edited Oct 22, 2023 05:32AM) (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments And we are done. I made it 70% into System Collapse and want to finish it today and also maybe finish my audio Deceiver this week.
Thinking about starting Fuzzy Nation.

I will take a breather now, do some small household chores, call my mum, make some food, rest my eyes and then get back to the book.

Next time I have to make more of an effort to keep my weekend free for this, so I can really focus on my reading.

message 43: by Susy (last edited Oct 22, 2023 10:21AM) (new)

Sorry, I was mostly absent in an attempt to get at least some reading done! I looked at some of her illustrations online and enjoyed them a lot!

Susy wrote: "Hope you enjoyed your readathon nonetheless Cathy!

Well, the first half was a non-event and then I went to sleep… 🤪
Today was nicely relaxed though. I mostly stayed away from social media and only checked into Discord and here a few times. I finished System Collapse and decided to re-read All Systems Red now. It‘s been 6 years!

I will try to do better in April.

message 46: by Cathy (last edited Oct 29, 2023 10:25AM) (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments Here is what I read this week:
- All Systems Red (Murderbot #1) 🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖, reread, novella, I had forgotten most of this! How it all began…
- Artificial Condition (Murderbot #2) 🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖, reread, novella. ART!
- Rogue Protocol (Murderbot #3) 🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖, reread, novella. Miki!

I am also almost done with Deceiver (Foreigner #11). A little over half an hour of the audio left.

And I started:
Exit Strategy (Murderbot #4), reread, novella.

The Murderbot novellas are all around 150 to 180 pages long.

October was a slow month, as I spent quite some time with two doorstoppers that I ultimately DNFd, each around halfway…

Pages and minutes in October 2023:
1,607 pages, 28.85 hours

Number of books, pages, and minutes so far for 2023:
98 books, 17,634 pages, 316.62 hours

Hi Cathy. . . . I think you too read and enjoyed The Girl Who Drew Butterflies: How Maria Merian's Art Changed Science. Lkcely book. Now I find that there is a biography written for adults: Chrysalis: Maria Sibylla Merian And the Secrets of Metamorphosis by Kim Todd. Letting you know in case you interested. . . . . I will have put off reading for a while, so if you read it soon, I hope you will tell me what you think.

Cathy (cathepsut) | 567 comments So, one week until the next readathon. If I checked correctly, it‘ll be Saturday 2pm till Sunday 2pm for me here in Germany.

I have 4 audiobooks planned as buddy reads for April and nothing lined up in print yet. Not sure what I want to read during the readathon and how much time I will actually have. I‘ll think about it this week.
