Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson - 4* - My Review

This book addresses one of those age-old questions. What happens when friends fall in love? The two main characters are black British artists. The narrator is a photographer. His friend is a young woman interested in writing and dancing. The realization that they have deeper feelings for each other leads to complications in their artistic collaborations. The storyline follows their lives in London, as they attempt to understand what is happening in the world of love, society, and their own minds. It ventures into the racial issues, violence, and prejudice they face on a daily basis. It portrays the difficulties in self-expression, as the need to be understood does battle with the emotions of fear and anger, and the impact of racially targeted trauma on interpersonal relationships. It is poetically written. The author does a nice job of writing in second person, which is difficult to do well.
