I was worried about that because it is so easy to get stuck in the same rut but Carriger wrote unique insights and perspectives.

I loved the adventure and the crew of the Custard. I'm curious about the connection between Alexia/Rue and Phinkerlington lady in the boiler room.

What I was unhappy about is that the book ended the way it did. I know it was done specifically to build-up for the next book but it sort of felt unfinished. Like there was still more to tell that just didn't happen.

Good book and I guess I'll just have to wait.

Yes, we are all interesTed in the Phinkerlington connection. That Alessandro Tarabotti sure got around.

Nicqui | 125 comments There was also the archivist in Parasol Protectorate who was named Phinkerlington that was never expounded on so maybe it's stemming from there. Although, if her ancestor worked for BUR why would she work in engine rooms of pleasure dirigibles? So many questions...

Jayne Fury (jaynefury) | 12 comments There's a loop somewhere that I can't seem to close regarding the name Phinkerlington as it crops up a few times, most notably in the free short story that I'm referring to. In it, the Baronet Phinkerlington's brother became a claviger to what sounds to be the Douen (sp). So, I suspect the line is long. Also, Alexia,s mother... Isn't she Letitia? So this is all quite like a puzzle with chunks undone yet.

Nicqui | 125 comments If I remember correctly from that short story, Phinkerlington is Alexia's mother's maiden name. The elder brother became a claviger and the younger brother we meet in the story and he later perishes. Unless they have other siblings, the line would have to continue through the claviger since we know what happened to Alexia's siblings. Although, Alexia's maternal grandfather could have brothers who could carry on the name as well. But I feel like I'm just overthinking it now.
