What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?

The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given a set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.

The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.

You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!

After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.

In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations. PLEASE NOTE: if you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)

Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!

Repicks:
You can ask for repicks if:

✱ The books picked for you are not yet released.
✱ If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf.
✱ If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf.

You may NOT ask for repicks because:
✱ A book is not available at your library.
✱ A genre or author you don’t enjoy.

INFORMATION NEEDED TO SIGN UP
Please answer the below question:

✱✱It's a busy time of year as Fall approaches and school starts. What's currently keeping you from reading?✱✱

✱✱ If you have a preferred shelf, please list it along with your pick! ✱✱

IMPORTANT DATES

Sign ups will remain open until August 25 ( 6 pm US PT)

You’ll have until August 30 ( 2 pm US PST) to make your recommendations.

Please do not start reading your book(s) until the first of the month. You then have the entire month to read your pick(s) and give some feedback.

If you’re new please read the PIFM Guidelines and FAQ . If you have any questions that are not addressed there, please feel free to ask!

✱Please note that late sign ups will be included at the host's discretion and no one will be included after re-picks are assigned!✱

Sonja (sonjac) | 1364 comments TIPS TO MAKE THE CHALLENGE ENJOYABLE FOR EVERYONE!

Pickees

✱ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e. secret baby).
Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.

Pickers
✱ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.

✱ You will be using 8 picking rules to select books for you pickee. Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author's work previously. The remaining 4 titles should come from your pickee's tbr, with a minimum of one from their preferred shelves if provided. Be sure to pick at least one book for each picking rule, but please limit your picks to no more than two books per rule as sometimes having too many options is worse than too few.

Please remember when you are giving new recommendations, you are not limited to titles that you have read. You can choose books that are new releases, on your tbr, or titles you looked up on Goodreads or Amazon that you think your pickee would enjoy.

A few hints to help with book selection:
Check the book’s publishing date. Select "date pub" from the checkbox selections and save.
Check pickee's personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., 'to read next', 'favorites' ‘didn’t like’)
Make sure the books you choose are not on their 'read' shelf. Just because it isn't rated doesn't mean it wasn't read.
Look at your pickee's 'read' shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✱ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.) Contact the Mods or the month's organizer for guidance.
Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their 'to-read' shelf, an older book on their 'to-read' shelf). This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.

If you want to volunteer to make repicks:
✱ We love that you want to help out, but please remember those who need picks have been waiting for a long time already. Please only volunteer if you are able to make the repicks within a few hours of the deadline. Thank you!

Sonja (sonjac) | 1364 comments **You do not need to include a preferred shelf if you would like to use your tbr shelf.

If you have a preferred shelf, PLEASE include the link with it when you post it in this thread. It really helps the hosts when listing the participants and pairings. Thank you!!

Sonja (sonjac) | 1364 comments September PIFM Picking Categories

1. September 1st National Lazy Mom’s Day Obviously I’m going to pick this one as a mom! And I plan to celebrate it as well! Sure, we have Mother’s Day, but even on those days you may find many moms still working, cleaning, cooking or generally taking care of their families. This is a gentle reminder to help mom out! No purchases necessary, just lend a hand to Mom and let her relax!
Recommend a book with an MC who is a mom; with a prominent mother figure in the story; or an author who is a mother; or with a pink cover.

2. September 4th: Eat an Extra Dessert Day Now this is a holiday I can get behind! Unfortunately the origins of this delectable day are lost to the mysteries of time, but we can console ourselves by enjoying the extra dessert anyway!
Recommend a book with an MC who is a chef (bonus points for dessert chef!); or where someone in the story enjoys eating a dessert; or a story you thought was really sweet (your interpretation); or with food or beverages on the cover.

3. September 8th: National Ampersand Day The ampersand, also known as the ‘and’ sign, is the logogram &, representing the conjunction “and”. As a conjunction, this is the part of the speech that connects words, phrases or clauses. While the keyboard symbol is more traditional, it often appears in modern writing as a “+” sign, a reversed numeral 3 or a lowercase epsilon () and sometimes superimposed by a vertical line. Ampersands are commonly used in business names (Johnson & Johnson, Marks & Spencer and Tiffany & Co) and in abbreviations such as B&B (bed and breakfast), R&B (rhythm and blues) and D&D (Dungeons and Dragons).
Recommend a book with the word ‘and’ or the ampersand symbol in the title or series name; or with a positive ‘connection’ in the story (your interpretation); or where the MC owns a business (bonus if it has an & in the name!); or with a black cover.

4. September 12th: National Video Games Day No reason to feel bad about avoiding the outside world on this day! Video games originated around the 1940s with the appearance of an ancient mathematical game machine called Nim at the New York World’s Fair. Today the video game industry has grown to over $18 billion industry with a wide array of gaming options. Video games should give enormous joy and reduce stress; however, many become addicted to them and cause stress. This day was set as a reminder to enjoy playing video games with limits so that they continue to relieve stress instead of causing it!
Recommend a book with a smart or tech-savvy character (your interpretation); or with a character who needs to reduce stress (your interpretation); or where the characters play a video game in the story; or with a paranormal or fantasy tag.

5. September 16th: National Play-Doh Day A day dedicated to the favorite plaything of children everywhere – and parents’ worse nightmare! The colorful, squishy modelling compound was originally manufactured in the 1930s in Cincinnati, Ohio and used as a wallpaper cleaner. It’s a compound of flour, water, salt, boric acid and mineral oil and can be found in pretty much every color imaginable these days!
Recommend a book set in Ohio or written by an author who is from Ohio; or has young children or a young child in the story; or where the characters play with toys (your interpretation!); or with a colorful cover.

6. September 19th: Talk Like a Pirate Day ARRRR!!! Avast ye scurvy sea dogs! This be the day to talk of pillaging and plundering and other such pirate talk. Pass the rum and drink up, me hearties! Yo Ho, yo ho a pirate’s life for me!
Recommend a book that is tagged ‘historical’; or is set in the Caribbean or other tropical environment; or with a ‘pirate-like’ character (your interpretation); or with water on the cover.

7. September 25th: National Comic Book Day While the first comics appeared in Europe around the early 1820s, the initial proto-comics started appearing in the US around 1933. It was the introduction of Superman in 1938 that really turned comic books into a major industry. Today's comics vary widely from those comic books of old and include any format from graphic novels to watching anime on TV. From Marvel to Manga, adults or children, this day is about all things comic.
Recommend a book with a funny or humorous character (your interpretation); or set in the United States; or tagged humor; or with a comic-like or cartoonish cover.

8. September 29th: National Women’s Health & Fitness Day Established in 2002, Women’s Health & Fitness Day promotes the physical fitness and health of women of all ages. The history of women’s health has been plagued by conjectures and superstitions. Topics such as childbirth and physical fitness have been taboo in many countries and societies until only recently. And certain practices that were accepted as the norm or ‘style’ were detrimental to a woman’s health. For example, from around the 1500s to the 1800s, corsets were considered a vital part of women’s fashion; however, it has been found that prolonged wearing of a corset can cause a weakening of the pectoral muscles and even fainting. In the 1930s, women were encouraged to work out at home, because sweating in public was considered unseemly. A decade later, women began going to gyms – but guess what they were called – reducing salons! It was more encouraged for losing weight than keeping fit! Thankfully we’ve come a long way in women’s health and fitness!
Recommend a book with a character who works out; or with a character who wears a corset; or with a woman or women on the cover; or a book that was recently published (within the last year).

TBR- Lost Witch The Lost Witch by Paige Crutcher - (paranormal)

NEW- Obession Obsession (The Mate Games, #1) by K. Loraine - (paranormal- really enjoyed this one)

TBR- Wolfish - Wolfish by Christiane M. Andrews ( children in story/ Colourful cover)

NEW- Dead Witch Walking - Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1) by Kim Harrison - (Ohio location or author)

6. September 19th: Talk Like a Pirate Day ARRRR!!! ! Yo Ho, yo ho a pirate’s life for me!

TBR- Lord of Ravensley - Lord of Ravensley by Constance Heaven ( historical romance)

NEW - Beauty and Highlander Beauty and the Highlander (Moriag #1) by Hildie McQueen - Historical romance

TBR- Lore Lore Olympus Volume Three (Lore Olympus, #3) by Rachel Smythe (comic cover)

NEW-Behind the Net Behind the Net (Vancouver Storm, #1) by Stephanie Archer (cartoonish cover -also on my tbr)

TBR- Midnight House The Midnight House by Amanda Geard - (2022 release)

NEW- Flawless Flawless (Chestnut Springs, #1) by Elsie Silver - (2022 release heard great things about this series also on tbr )

If you need any repicks just let me know :).

Happy reading
