This is the thread where you can submit a task idea for the 50 Point Task contest. The thread is now open for submissions and will close at Midnight Eastern time on October 5th. Voting will start the next day, October 6th and will close at the end of the day on October 12th. If the moderators determine that the vote is close, a 3-day runoff poll will be held. The person whose idea gets the most votes will host the 50 point task for the Fall Challenge.

The 50 point task will require:
1. Only 3 options. These options may not include more than 2 "sub options" - 6 total in the task.
2. One book per option.
3. Three books totaling at least 750 pages. Your task idea may require a higher page threshold but this must be disclosed in your entry.
4. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.
6. No “free choice” options will be allowed. This is a challenge, so tasks that have no element of challenge do not fit the purpose.
7. A task must be accessible to the majority of players, i.e. not limited to a specific format, edition, publisher, etc. and reviewable by the moderators.

Anyone eligible* to design a task may submit an idea for a task that follows the general guidelines above. Your idea should be a sketch that may be developed with the moderators.

* To be eligible to create a task, the player’s profile must be set up to accept Goodreads messages, and they must not have a task in the current challenge. Only one task per person per challenge.

The group will vote to determine the 50 point task. All ideas that fit the general guidelines will be included in a poll. The poll winner will develop their idea with the moderators to refine their task. The final task may differ from the original idea submission. The task will be posted as close to the midpoint as reasonably possible. The task creator will monitor and answer questions in the help thread.

Please include your Readerboard name and a title for your task. The entries will be listed by Readerboard name and task title in the poll. Please include only one task idea entry per post.

PLEASE DO NOT comment on people's entries in this thread - this is for submissions only - you will be able to comment when voting begins. Comments in this thread will be deleted.

Title: 50%, or 1/2

Book 1: Halfway There
Sub-option 1: Read a book set in two different places - this could be different countries, cities or states. In line with the task theme, the settings should be roughly 50% of the book each.
Sub-option 2: Read a book with a road or path on the cover, e.g.
Edie Richter Is Not Alone by Rebecca Handler Death In Holy Orders (Adam Dalgliesh, #11) by P.D. James A Psalm for the Wild-Built (Monk & Robot, #1) by Becky Chambers Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Book 2: My Other Half
Sub-option 1: Read a book with the MPG "romance".
Sub-option 2: Read a book with two main characters (they don't necessarily have to be romantically involved, e.g. The Switch which is about a granddaughter and grandmother)

Book 3: Six of One, a Half Dozen of the Other
Read a book with a title that contains the pattern: "(concrete noun) and (concrete noun)"
For example: The Wolf and the Woodsman, Nettle & Bone, Klara and the Sun, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
They can be proper nouns or common nouns.

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3675 comments Trishhartuk’s idea: Languages

This task requires three books totalling at least 750 pages.
No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.

As well as the SRC, I’m in another challenge group, called Around the Year in 52 Books (or ATY for short), which is one where the members vote on the prompts for each year. One idea that came up as a possibility for 2024 was “A book with a bilingual character”, which generated a fascinating discussion on languages in different countries across the globe. Even though it didn't get voted in, this “prompted” me to come up with a language-based task for the SRC.

Book 1: Read a book which was originally written in your native language, by an author that you have never read before. Required: specify your native language, and state that the author is new to you.

Book 2: Read a new-to-you book translated from a language other than your native language. Required: specify the original language in which the book was written, and that the book is new to you.

Book 3: In a game of Scrabble, in the English version, at least, the rarest letters are J, X, Q and Z, scoring 8 or 10 points, respectively. Read a book (new or reread) with one of these four letters as either one of the author’s initials, or one of the initial letters of the words in the title, or both (in which case, it could be the same letter or two different ones). The letter can be stand alone (i.e. a single-letter word, or an author initial). The book should also have at least one of the numbers 8, 1 or 0 in the page count. Required: include the page count and the number used.

Book 3 examples:
X, Sue Grafton: X is a word in the title, page count of 416pt includes 1.
Old Haunts, E.J. Copperman: J is an author initial, page count of 190 includes 0.
The Book Thief, Markus Zusak: Z is an author initial, page count of 550pg includes 0.
The Good Husband of Zebra Drive, Alexander McCall Smith: Z is the initial letter of a word in the title, page count of 212pg includes 1.
The Bruising of Qilwa, Naseem Jamnia: Q is the initial letter of a word in the title, J is an author initial, page count of 176pg includes 1.

Task Name: Sort by...
Go to the My Books tab and at the bottom of the page is an option to sort your TBR in multiple ways. Choose three different ways to sort your personal TBR and pick three options listed below.
Books must total 750 pages and SRC rules apply.
If the book has not been published yet, does not meet SRC requirements, or you are unable to acquire a copy (i.e. library does not carry a copy) you can choose the next book.

Option 1: Read the book that has been on your TBR the longest or the shortest. Sort by Date Added.

Option 2: Read the book that has the lowest rating on your TBR or the highest. Sort by Avg Rating.

Option 3: Read the book that has the shortest page count (must follow SRC rules of length/ genre, etc.) or that has the longest page count. Sort by Num pages.

Option 4: Read a book chosen randomly by the GR generator. Sort by Random and read the first book listed.

Option 5: Read a book that starts with an A or starts with a Z. Sort by Title. Ignore A, The, or An. Keep in mind it will also sort books you have already read so scroll until you get an unread book (or do a reread if you desire) and you may also get a number title, which you can chose instead.
For example: If I sort by title on my own TBR, I could read 12 of Never by James Patterson or Abandon Me by Melissa Febos.

Option 6: Read a book with the highest number of rating or the lowest number of ratings. Sort by Num Ratings.

50.1 - Lisa MD: For the Love of Indy Bookstores

Nothing warms my soul as much as visiting a bookstore. Casually strolling the aisles and browsing the shelves fills me with peace and joy. This task is designed to celebrate my love of independent bookstores, which is something I’m sure is shared by most members of the SRC.

No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.

Book 1: I love to visit Independent Bookstores near or far. Some of my local bookshops offer amazing author events, which are some of my favorite activities to attend. My vacation itinerary always includes finding a local bookshop. This is a list of some of the Indy Bookstores I’ve visited:

OR

B. Read a book with a word of 3 or more letters in the title or subtitle made from the letters in one of the bookstores listed above.

REQUIRED: State the word and name the bookstore used in making your title word.

REQUIRED: State the word.

Book 3: Of course, I need a tote to commemorate my visit to a new Indy Bookstore and to carry out my book haul.

A. Read a book where the letters in TOTE can be found in either the title or author’s name.

OR

B. Read a book where the letters in INDY can be found in either the title or author's name.
