Planning Sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
This is where you will enter your books and the information/letters we can use into the sheet titled "Round 1 Plan".
If you don't want to use the spreadsheet, it's fine to enter your books' information in this thread and we can put it in for you. You don't have to do both.

Team Q&A
1. Do we need to link books on the spreadsheet?
It's fine to just put in the book title & author for the spreadsheet without linking.

2. Do we need to record letters that aren't in our word?
Nope! Although for the author, it's nice to have that entered so we get the correct book. I was being an overachiever when I put in my three planned books, but it'd probably be easier to just have letters in the SS we can actually use - so I'm glad you asked this!

3. Bonus books - do they have to work for the word?
Yes, we'll have to use them somewhere as a letter in the word.

4. Bonus books - for the word list can we use a word more than once?
Yes, so if we use guitar (for example) 10 times, that's no problem.

5. What editions do we use?
We are supposed to use the edition we are reading for page numbers and color covers. That can be a beast if you're on the app so just do your best - we go for the default page numbers a lot because all editions don't have those numbers listed. But be sure if you are reading for a color cover it's the book you actually read/have on your shelf.

4 Nov to 18 Nov
Link to end of Round 3/Start of Round 4:
https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

Word: VIOLA POMPOSA
Color Red (50% or more) - 5 bonus points each, maximum of 5 books

Round 3 Bonus For this round, find musical instruments on the cover of your books (any instrument, just has to be obviously an instrument)

Each found instrument will earn an additional 5 bonus points. Only one instrument per book cover and a maximum of 10 bonus instruments. You can find the same instrument multiple times (not least because no one's got time to decide if it's a violin or viola etc etc)

Note to players: any changes to the standard bonus rules, similar to what was done for Round 2, will not be determined until after the results of Round 2 and the mods see the point spread between teams. A lot can change from round to round.

Book of the Month

How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix
Starts 16 Oct
Here is the link to the thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...--
Feel free to volunteer for daily questions!

Here is the Poll for November books of the Month: https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/3...
Plug: I think Bobbi nominated Starter Villain, which has been on my to-read list - so that one is my personal choice - although I've read several on that list and they were great!

Suzanne | 5417 comments A Reading State of Mind (The Wheel Rap)

(view spoiler)

I am very excited to get to play Wheel with all of you! I thought it was funny I got team Rap, and my husband thought it was hilarious, but I also think we can have a lot of fun with it!

Please take the time to check in, introduce yourself, and also link your Wheel shelf. And feel free to ask questions (at any time during the challenge).

As for me - I'm retired, and I'm busier than ever, although it's more fun stuff. I used to teach math at the university here, and currently I work with about 25 kids providing activities a few times a month. I love dogs and have 2, and I like to travel. In fact, we are spending next week in Yellowstone, so I MAY be somewhat quiet, depending on when I can find internet.

It will sure be fun spending the next few months reading together! And big shoutout to my co-captain Nanci, who you will meet soon. She is one of the most cheerful, positive people to be around and I know you will all love her.

Leslie Ann | 941 comments Hi all! Nice to see some familiar faces. I live in Colorado and I too am retired and busy as ever. Looking forward to playing with all of you. Here is my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 9: by Kari (new)

Kari | 274 comments Hi, checking in! Not a huge fan of rap music (I prefer 80's and 90's stuff) but I loved the one you posted above, Suzanne🎶. It's been a while since I participated in TT or Wheel and this sounds like a fun team, I think I know most of you from other challenges and I'm happy to meet the rest of you😀. I'm in Madrid so my time is GMT+2. I read mostly all romance with some cozy mysteries thrown in.

Janeylou | 1134 comments Hi All 👋👋
Ive made up this little "Rap Ditty" so remember to say it in your rap voice

Im a cool girl now
Called janeylou
And i have a little message
Gonna give to you

Im a waiting to start
With the books that i see
All ready to go
A one..two..three

Hoping to chat
As the months go by
And ill start off now
And say a great big hi 👋

message 11: by Janeylou (new)

Janeylou | 1134 comments I think i know most people here but for those i dont , im Janine from England work part time in a coffee shop so have plenty of time for reading & challenges . Im very chatting and on GR most times .Love my music , but unfortunately Rap Is not really my cup of tea . Im into emo/ goth/ indi/ punk/ rock
Fave band is My Chemical Romance ..also Muse, Placebo etc
But on the other hand i love Elvis ( my mom was a fan so grew up up with him & Glenn Campbell).
My aerial is broke in my car so i can only get Radio 1 on , which is the young kids pop/ chart music, so listen to a fair bit of that as well 😄

Janeylou | 1134 comments Questions
Had a look at planning SS and looks like i can do this if we dont have to link book titles, can i just write in title & author
I noticed that you ( suzanne) entered letters that are not in our word SYNTHESIZER, do we need to put those in or just ones that work ?
Do the bonus books also have to work for our work or are they classed as seperate
Bonus books ..could we use 5 for guitar or do they need to be different
Bonus books ( 10 only) are we going to plan these out before , as no good all reading for same when we can use other rounds
Which editions do we use ..default/ what we read/ any
I always use default for marking off my books as read ( as easier) so do i need to make sure its the edition im using

Sorry if some of these questions have been covered , sure I'll come up with more 😁

message 16: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Hello Team!
I'm Nanci your co-captain and so happy to be with Suzanne on another adventure of Wheel! Suzanne is a fabulous captain and fun to boot!

A little about me. I am retired from the public school system where I spent 12 years teaching most grade levels in elementary and 20 years as a school counselor. My husband and I have been married 44 years and we have 3 adult children and 7 grandchildren. We live in Virginia and love to travel.

Fun to see some familiar names along with new names. If you're not already my friend, I sent you a friend request, so keep an eye out for that. It's really helpful for the captains to be friends with each team member, so we can reach you privately, if needed.

Also, please never be shy about asking questions if you don't understand. We usually all benefit from the questions asked and rules vary from challenge to challenge, so even if you're a seasoned player it's normal to need clarification.

I'm not into rap, but I taught rhyming words for a long time, so here is my attempt.

My name is Nanci and I'm here to say
I love to play Wheel come what may

Our team will be awesome cause we're not uptight
The other teams will fear us and you know that's right

So read, read, read and then read some more
You'll have lots of fun and it won't be a chore

We'll support one another when a task is due
And add to our TBR lists quite more than a few!

Janine and Suzanne thanks for getting us in the mood with your clever raps!

Suzanne | 5417 comments I LOVE the raps! And the check-ins, with or without raps :)

I have to leave soon to pick up veggies, so I'll answer questions when I get back. Janeylou - they were brilliant because they helped me think more about how to do things. I suspect between all of us, we'll find the best ways of managing this challenge most efficiently.

message 20: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 696 comments Hello all!

I was also on Ashara with all of you so far, but was fairly quiet as I was 8/9 months pregnant and just exhausted all the time. I now have, no bias, the most perfect 7 week old ever and surprisingly am getting enough sleep and a good amount of reading time. I love all types of music and am extremely eclectic with what I listen to. I'm actually well known for breaking out Eminem during karaoke lol. I'm currently on maternity leave with an easy sleepy baby so am around a lot but in December I go back to work (I'm a lawyer), so will be an adjustment!

Here's my wheel shelf Wheel 23

message 22: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 2378 comments Hi All - I see some familiar names and some new ones. Glad to be here with you all either way!

I'm excited to play Wheels again - this is my 4th or 5th or I don't know how many... Anyway.

I have no rap to offer - I am not creative in that way! But it's fun to see what you guys have shared! I'm not much of a rap lover either, I'm in my 50s so you can assume I'm more of an 80s-90s solid rock fan... and the hair bands of the 80s of course. Def Leppard music still gets my heart pumping! But I'd say classic rock is probably my favorite genre.

I'm headed out on vacation the week we start - I'll be traveling Oct 6-Oct 12. I'll still be able to read just don't know how much and how often I'll be able to update that week. As it happens, I'll be starting my vacation off with a musical bang. We're heading to Las Vegas to see U2 at the Sphere. Pretty excited to see them in this unique new setting. Then we head to the Grand Canyon for a few days.

About me - I live in Indiana in the US and still working, nowhere near retirement yet, unfortunately. I've been married for 30 years with 2 grown boys and one almost daughter-in-law. We have 2 dogs but one is very old and sliding into doggie dementia, so my heart is sad when I think about her. But she's precious to us so are trying to pamper her more than ever.

I read all the time, mostly romance but any sub-genre that pretty much ends up fitting any genre needed for a task. I hate horror and won't read it until it's a pnr or fantasy that happens to be tagged horror as well. Other than that, I'll try pretty much anything though I might complain about it 😁

Suzanne | 5417 comments Congratulations Amanda on that perfect baby! I thought you did an amazing job in TT - what a real trooper doing everything while so very very pregnant. Congratulations to the baby too, getting such a wonderful mom :)

LaurLa - what a fun and fitting vacation! No worries about checking in too much - since this round goes to the 21st, you can get things checked in by then and we can shuffle, etc. as needed. But thanks so much for the heads up so we know you didn't disappear :)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Here are some Q&A answers. I'm going to keep a running list in my links thread too. I really welcome other ideas/opinions - those are what really make a team great.

1. Do we need to link books on the spreadsheet?
It's fine to just put in the book title & author for the spreadsheet without linking.

2. Do we need to record letters that aren't in our word?
Nope! Although for the author, it's nice to have that entered so we get the correct book. I was being an overachiever when I put in my three planned books, but it'd probably be easier to just have letters in the SS we can actually use - so I'm glad you asked this!

message 29: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments 5 color books each round and THIS round 10 "instrument in text" books. I think Round 2 that will be something different. The mods are really good at keeping us on our toes.

Must have forgotten to update my page when I saw the thread was frozen - just popping by as lots of familiar faces here!! :)

Loving all the rap songs, wouldn't know where to begin!
Enjoy the challenge! :)

message 37: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments Hi Team,

This will be my 6th Wheel!

I'm from North Carolina and live in the mountains. We are starting to get some beautiful fall leaves. One of my favorite times of year.

I love music but not so much rap but every once in a while I'll listen to it, mostly one song by Ludacris that pops in my head every time someone is in my way. I'm more likely to listen to classic rock - Fleetwood Mac, Def Leppard, and Zztop are some of my current go to artists.

I read a lot of fantasy romance and science fiction romance. I'll read pretty much anything except urban fantasy. Fingers crossed there is a backroom book of the month.

My Wheelshelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 38: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Hi Annalisa! Thanks for checking in. I'm more of a classic rock person too, but at least rap is a fun genre for us to toy with.

Fall is my favorite time of year too.

@Janeylou - I'm glad you figured out it doesn't start til the 7th :)

message 40: by Bobbi (new)

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) | 463 comments Hello friends! I'm more of a rock girly, but Aersomith bridged that gap with Run DMC around the time I was born, so hey, so can I.

I'm from Michigan and am surrounded by chaos (I'm getting pretty good at it now lol). I read a little bit of everything, but my happy place is horror and psychological thrillers.

This is my first wheel but not my first team challenge. I'm looking forward to it!

My shelf is here: Wheel-o-Music 8.

Nanci | 2567 comments Amanda, huge congratulations to you and your baby dumpling! Adorable! Isn’t it amazing the instant love you have immediately. So nice too that so far things are pretty easy for you.

So nice to hear from more of you. I love finding out about each of you and finding out more from those of you I already know. Buckle your seatbelts, it’s going to be a fun ride!

message 42: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Hi Bobbi and Cordelia! Wow - everyone has checked in on the first day we are open - that wonderful! Thanks so much! I hope we all have a fantastic time!

message 43: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments It is HUGE that we have everyone checked in on the first day! Congratulations, team, we're off to a great start!

Our color cover for this first Round is white. The cover needs to be 50% or more white. If you're unsure, or TinEye is being wonky, feel free to post your book on the thread and we can all give feedback.

I just finished Bridget Jones's Diary (Bridget Jones, #1) by Helen Fielding which is a great choice for a white cover and is a funny, fast read if anyone is interested.

I am currently in the Turf Wars challenge, which will overlap with Wheel, so hoping my books will work for double duty. Anyone else currently playing in other challenges?

message 44: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 696 comments I have 3 white covers planned for this week, should probably move them to next week! I think I can make that work.

Nanci, I'm currently in 7 (I think) team challenges! But I think Janine is in more

message 45: by Janeylou (new)

Janeylou | 1134 comments Im in 14 at the moment ....cant stop and chat, havent the time 😄😄

message 46: by Cordelia (new)

Cordelia | 464 comments I am not in any other challenges. I was doing a team readathon for another group that ended last weekend!

I work with books as part of my job so I try really hard to balance reading as my job vs reading as my hobby, and I find if I do too many challenges it can make that balance harder!

But I think they're fun and I understand why people enjoy doing them.

message 47: by Bobbi (last edited Oct 01, 2023 06:39PM) (new)

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) | 463 comments I am currently doing this, Turf Wars, Life, Monster Hunt, Titan Round Up, Halloween Round Up, Hitchhiker's Guide, and Star Trek Missions. Somehow, it has been working out pretty well!

I have at least one white cover.

message 48: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments I love how many challenges you all do! Amanda, Janine and Bobbi I could never manage that, but hats off to you for sure.

I get a little stressed when I'm in more than three. One thing that would make it less stressful for me would be if the rules were the same for all challenges. When each challenge is different concerning minimum #of pages, number of months for rereads, time frame when books can be started, etc. I get mixed up. It is very satisfying though when you can get one book to work for numerous challenges.

Yay for lining up those white covers!

Cordelia, tell us about your job and how you work with books. Sounds like a dream!

message 49: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments I signed up as backup for Suzanne for the BOM How to Sell a Haunted House. I don't like Horror and not much into Paranormal, but it does sound funny so maybe it will temper the deadly scary parts. The things we do for challenges! *shaking in my boots!

message 50: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Wow what a lot of great white covers you all have found! That's awesome!

Thanks for signing up for the BOM questions too Nanci. I too hope the book is more funny than horror. I've certainly expanded my genres since doing challenges.

I'm doing Turf Wars, Life, and this one as far as current challenges. There are so many more that tempt me but I've tried to resist :) I agree it really could be nice if rules were the same.

I spent the day at my Dad's house - it's about a 2.5 hour drive each way. He decided not to go to Yellowstone with us, which I totally understand, as with the dementia it is stressful for him to live out of the familiar house. Poor guy. But it was wonderful spending the day with him and my brother/sister-in-law.
