Sarah (missredsage) | 2 comments It’s been a few years, but I’m back and available for beta reading. I’m not too fussed on length or genre, but I’ll be more likely to say yes if your book is fiction and not horror or fantasy. Having said that, it all depends on what you’re doing with the characters and the plot!

I give honest and thorough reviews based on plot, character growth and flow and I’ll absolutely tell you what I love, what I don’t and most importantly, why.

I’ll take at least a manuscript per month, happy to work with you on something unfinished for ideas and if there’s something specific you want feedback on or to workshop, I’ll help out too.

I look forward to hearing from all of you amazing authors out there!!

Sarah

John | 92 comments Hello Sarah,

I have a contemporary novel at 158k words.

Blurb:
One morning in a coffee shop, Alex is beside himself to meet Pete Shehann, whom it seems has some experience in the very subject of which he is a self-proclaimed enthusiast. Reluctant yet prompted, Pete shares his story, beginning with how his father abandoned him as a child in rural 1930s Oklahoma, leaving him embittered and believing himself a failure, proven time and again. And marrying May couldn’t be luck at all but a fluke, even if she has her own problems. After losing all of her family in a tragic accident, a terrible void remains, and she wants children more than anything.

An unexpected inheritance raises suspicions yet sends Pete and May to a new life in Oregon, where they meet Stevens, the attorney handling the inheritance and proving himself a faithful friend in the years to come. But a tragedy that happened on their journey haunts Pete, eventually conforming to an eerie parallel with May after her health fails following the negative results of an infertility test. It greatly disturbs Pete to discover he isn’t even enough for his own wife to want to live, but he determines to do whatever it takes to save her. And what of himself? Is he destined a lifetime of failure?

Contains some horror elements.

If interested, contact me here or at lostintwilight@netzero.net

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Richard Ettinger | 19 comments I'd love for you to read my latest ‘The Button Situation.’
It's 1960 when we first meet young Julius Briscoe a typical American boy from a typical American town. It's the day before spring break, Julius is on the schoolyard where he is challenged to an unfair fight for wearing provocative socks. This threat unleashes Julius' psychic powers which he uses, unintentionally, to kill his challenger.
So begins Julius Briscoe’s long strange trip from an overcrowded public school in a middle class suburb of Philadelphia to a swanky private school on the ritzy Main Line. Along the way he thwarts a convenience store hold-up by the same gang that killed his father two years earlier. He avenges his father’s death, becomes a made man in the Jewish mafia and learns a history lesson he didn’t want to learn. And that’s just chapter one.
Each day Julius learns more about his abilities. He uses them to prevent a couple of thugs from raping a ten year old neighbor girl, reconnects with his one true love Grace Gold, daughter of the famed tennis star Neddie Beachum, and the granddaughter of the billionaire Miles Gold who as Julius learns later also has psychic gifts. Julius buys a snazzy foreign sports car, vows to avenge the brutal murder of his favorite teacher, meets the godfather of the jewish mafia and visits the Philadelphia Museum of Art with Gracie Gold.
Julius’ sprawling adventure brings him face to face with hoodlums, cheap shot artists, J. Edgar Hoover, smokin’ hot women, evil terrorists, the Daughters of the American Revolution, future rock and roll legends. He attends a Sadie Hawkins Day dance and a lavish Sweet Sixteen party. He and Gracie win a dance contest.
Along the way we meet billionaires, eccentric common folk, starving artists, the former world’s greatest assassin. There’s sibling rivalries, car crashes, a Beatles concert, the Miss America Pageant, greed, avarice, backstabbing and envy. The Button Situation contains humor, sarcasm, violence, strange scientific theories and an ending that is certain to haunt.

Sarah (missredsage) | 2 comments Thanks so much all, I am booked up to the end of the year, but happy to look at some beta reads for 2024!

message 9: by Antony (new)

Antony Stanton (antonyjstanton) | 10 comments Hi Sarah,

I'm looking for a beta reader, saw your post and wondered if you might be interested - and 2024 is fine, whenever fits your schedule...

I've written a 95k manuscript, multiple third person PoVs, working title, "The Watching of Wolves." It's a historical gothic thriller. I know you said above that you're not keen on horror - well, although this is about vampires, I'd say it leans more towards the thrills than the horrors. Very character driven and very theme-minded (prejudice / revenge). I hope I've worked enough on the character arcs, the relationships, et al...

Bloodshed is appropriate, not gory. I'm looking for beta readers of the entire manuscript (or just the first three chapters if you're pushed for time, as you wish.)

The manuscript has been to a professional editor already, I worked on the revisions for over a year, and would appreciate the fresh eyes and erudite perspective of a page-turning book fiend.
I've previously published a trilogy, and this is the first book in the prequel series.

If any of that sounds appealing, that would be great. Below is a brief synopsis. Many thanks, and best wishes,
Antony

Amidst medieval Europe’s bloody Crusades, Darius, the young son of a Bulgarian lord, sees his mother killed by a vampire creature of the night. Whilst serving in the Christian army of Wallachia’s ruler, Vlad Dracul, he must try to survive the war against the Muslim Ottomans long enough to avenge his mother and kill the beast. But his quest will endanger his sickly sister and threaten the lives of those he loves. Ultimately Darius must decide, at what cost vengeance?

Pat Montagne | 26 comments Hi Sarah,

I understand you are booked up for this year, but wanted to share my information for whenever you have availability next!

I have about 50 pages/ 20k words of a historical romance novel prepared for feedback if you are interested. Very mild sexual content.

Quick Synopsis:
Post-WWI, an American nurse working in London marries a Marquess bachelor and becomes part of the British aristocracy. Gossip and secrets spin about the abrupt and unusual marriage among their staff and other women of consequence. She's not what anyone expected as she's quick to adapt, but has secrets to hide. He's not as rich as a Marquess should be and has family tragedies that mark his past. Will this match lead to a blissful and powerful union, or will the aristocracy and her fear destroy what could be?

Please email me at patmontagne678@gmail.com when you have availability and if you think it's a match. I can send the draft to you for review.

Sebastian Black | 12 comments Hi Sarah,

If you are still accepting beta reads for 2024, I have a sci-fi comedy about a man who gets stuck in his favorite 1980's sci-fi show and has to figure out how to return to his own universe. It's 70K but the I usually start with the first act (which is 20K) to see if the story is a good fit for your taste. Let me know, thanks!

message 12: by Scott (new)

Scott | 11 comments Hi Sarah. I just finished my first novel and I was wondering if you would like to give it a read. It's called Scarred and is complete at 92K words. Here's the blurb:

Set in Los Angeles, Scarred is the story of a woman coming to terms with unbelievable trauma while at the same time discovering an internal strength greater than she ever thought she had. Sarah, a former Marine who had settled into a comfortable life with her husband and young daughter, thought she had reached the pinnacle of suburban comfort when a case of mistaken identity throws everything into chaos. Consumed by her hatred and pain, Sarah begins to plot her revenge against the people and forces responsible for the horrific death of her family.

Cutting herself off from the outside world, Sarah trains ferociously in an effort to transform herself, both mentally and physically, back into the soldier she once was. Simultaneously, she commits herself to investigating the heinous crime that irrevocably changed her life forever. After waging a violent crusade, she comes to realize that EcstaZen, a massive pharmaceutical company based in downtown Los Angeles, has created the new street drug sweeping the city, which was, inadvertently, the cause of her misfortune.

Full of daring action sequences, moments of quiet, dark introspection, and the kinds of narrative twists and turns that are sure to keep even the most jaded reader guessing, Scarred will take readers on a roller coaster of emotion and adventure. As the story unfolds, we realize that everyone exists in a state of moral ambiguity, and it’s never quite so clear who is “good” and who is “bad.”

I'm looking for beta readers to work with me on a steamy contemporary romance with single parents seeking love after loss. It's very heartfelt and cute, but also hot and spicy in parts. prasad | 4 comments Hi Sarah,
I'm at the final stage of writing a short cozy mystery novel, about 40000 words. If you can for me in early next year, please do beta read. Synopsis: A meddling Indian mom, jets off to the U.S. to nag her son into marriage. Little does she know, he's already hitched and knee-deep in a murder mess with a pregnant wife. Determined to play detective, she recruits a quirky crew, unravels a mystery buffet, and exposes a shady cast of characters.
I can send the draft for your review, of agreed. Thank you.

Johaina | 3 comments Hi Sara!

I have been editing for a while now and I think it is time for other eyes than my own to judge the story. It is 111k manuscript, contemporary, and a fusion of literary and commercial fiction.

This is the current synopsis I would add to the query letters I hope to start sending soon for “Leyla Luna and the Muses”.

What makes a person good? Their word? Their actions? Their intentions? How to judge if your moral compass shattered a long time ago... or never really worked?
On the verge of becoming a depressed recluse in London, Leyla Luna Alama, a struggling writer who has traveled all over the world being the ambassador’s daughter, moves to a city she has not yet been to to find a muse.
Still affected by two major break ups that happened when she lived in Paris, Leyla Luna puts her search for inspirarion in the new city above anything else, even her own safety.
In Istanbul, gregarious and open to anything in the name of research, she befriends a local con artist: Serkan. Falling for his mastery of persuasion and vigilante antics as he helps her in her search for inspiration, Leyla Luna gets hurt and betrayed in a rather familiar way. Questioning whether karma has come for her, life lessons are learned that the best schools her parents sent her to could not teach her.

message 16: by Shauntelle (new)

Shauntelle Hemingway | 4 comments Hi Sarah! I'm Shauntelle Hemingway. I recently finished writing my very first novel and need beta readers willing to read my story and give me honest critiques about it. It is long, with over 300 pages and 100K+ words.

Here is a brief synopsis of my completed novel (Ice, Fire & A Storm), which I have to stress contains mature themes that may be triggering for some: Liam Munroe is a fifteen-year-old senior in high school in a small town in California. His peers reject him, he has no friends, and he is bullied to the point where he has attempted suicide (twice). Every day goes by in a painful blur until Liam sees the Los Angeles-born and bred new transfer student, Xander Mitchell, who is perfect in every way, from his confidence to his 1988 IROC Z28 Chevy Camaro. Being complete opposites, someone like Xander wouldn't give someone like Liam the time of day, would they?

I would like to get the following feedback on my story: 1. How was the story's overall flow (any plotholes or inconsistencies)? 2. What did you like and did not like about the story 3. Who was your favorite character, and why?

Let me know if you're interested. Thanks! :)

Mila | 6 comments Hi Sara it seems like you may enjoy my novel. Here’s a summary, let me know here or over email if I should send you the manuscript:

My thriller/spicy romance novel „Beneath“. It is about 95% ready. The missing chapters are explained in some words and don’t affect the understanding of the plot.

As if things were not complicated enough, she starts receiving messages from the mysterious XV, wrapping her in a sick game of threats and challenges. Is he the one who saved her? And what is his identity? Why is he playing with her?

Synopsis: A polished, 80k-word thriller noir set in postmodern San Francisco. The story follows Grayson, a disgraced former investigative reporter, who becomes entangled in a dark conspiracy involving a revolutionary memory-capture device called ClairIQ. Grayson's journey takes him through a web of danger, addiction, and moral dilemmas as he tries to thwart the nefarious plans of the device's creator.

Your perspective would greatly benefit the narrative, characters, and overall storytelling as I rewrite it one last time before querying.

If you are interested in taking on this role as a beta reader, please let me know, and I will provide you with the manuscript for your review. Your feedback will be instrumental in helping me shape this novel into its best possible form.

Thank you for considering my request, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Jet Blankett | 7 comments Hi Sarah, I have a genre-bending mystery-comedy fiction novel that you might be interested in! This 50k word story features two separate mysteries, PANDAMONIUM! and MONK E BUSINESS, combined into one novel. These mysteries combine the zany, lighthearted humor of Psych, an Agatha Christie-style whodunit, all rolled into a Janet Evanovich novel.

Synopsis:
In PANDAMONIUM!, after returning home following a narrow escape from a horde of angry chickens, Aurelius, an innate puzzle solver and detective, receives an enigmatic email about a murderous panda loose in a mysterious mansion. Upon arrival, he and his intrepid assistant, Remi, find a mansion filled with a suspicious butler, a wealthy couple, and a visiting college professor, all of whom have no knowledge of the panda. Later that evening, the panda makes its murderous debut at dinner, but not before showing off its clearly outdated dance moves. Suddenly, our detectives find themselves looking for a lost Civil War treasure before the panda can strike again. Against all odds, the fate of the treasure ultimately rests in a swordfight between the panda and Cap’n Crunch.

In MONK E BUSINESS, Aurelius & Remington travel to Monk E's Amusement Park to investigate strange goings-on, including animatronics seemingly coming to life, rides mysteriously catching fire, and threatening messages written in blood. Will the intrepid detectives be able to dodge deadly traps and funnel cake stands to solve the case in time? Or will they go bananas at the sight of a deranged gorilla? There's more than meets the eye in this thrilling tale of jealousy and greed!

If this sounds like something you'd be interested in beta reading, feel free to reach out either on Goodreads or via email: jet.blankett@gmail.com.

Thanks for your consideration!

Jet Blankett

Kara | 3 comments Hi Sarah! Would you be interested in a 52K feminist fantasy set in Ancient Greece? Here's a synopsis to give you an idea of what it's about. Thank you!

In ancient Greece, monsters were feared, and the Amazons were hated … and Nike is both. Born with snow-white wings and abandoned on the island of Samothrace, Nike was raised to be a woman warrior, but her wings set her apart from the other Amazons, and her gender makes her a target of the patriarchs who would rather see a woman dead than defiant. Nike would lay her life down for her Amazon sisters, but when her own slave ignites a rebellion on the island—a disaster that takes the lives of her adoptive Amazonian mother and father—Nike finds herself even more alienated.

Desperate to find direction and meaning, Nike vows to go to the Oracle of Delphi for answers. Her queen permits her to go on one condition: Nike must first return bratty, foul-mouthed, runaway Princess Syna to her home in Crete or King Minos will wage war to take her back. Nike reluctantly agrees, and, accompanied by her sardonic Belen and a retinue of warriors, begins the long journey to return Princess Syna home … only to run headlong into tragedy. With the Amazons captured and Princess Syna in danger, Nike is forced to confront a demon from her past … and win or lose, it could cost her everything.

Hi Sarah, I'm Tiara and I'm writing a lesbian coming-of-age romance novel and I am in need of beta readers! I use a system that goes chapter to chapter for feedback and as of right now I have chapter 1 ready for feedback. If you're interested you can DM me and I can give you more details. For your reference, here's the blurb I wrote:

Cynical Mia is the last person on Earth that knows how to deal with awkwardness - so what is she to do when she catches the town’s princess, Angelina, in a, let’s say, compromising position? Compromising like up against a wall in a dressing room at Mia’s job. This wouldn’t be much of a deal beyond embarrassing if they never interacted again, and Mia planned to keep it that way. A plan that goes up in flames as Angelina is determined to intertwine their lives and spark up conversations that lead to them divulging the deepest parts of their souls. But just as Mia finds herself slowly shedding her negative outlook on life, conflicts arise when Angelina's loyalty to her current partner hangs in the balance and Mia and Angelina find themselves entangled in a web of conflicting emotions that threaten to tear them apart. Just how hard is it to learn how to love?

CJ Yardley | 23 comments Hi Sarah!

I have a 93k-word contemporary story with wholesome MxM romantic elements (no smut). It deals with generational trauma and its effects on a family, dealt with through a series of letters the main character's deceased mother left him. On the way there's a bunch of secrets that need to come out, and several (hopefully) huge twists.

Could you please let me know if you'd be at all interested in such a story? I'm not too bothered about a long timeline, if I could just get a vague idea of when you'd have availability?

Thanks!
CJ

Molly Stegall (mollystegall) | 239 comments Hello, I have recently finished my Dark YA Fantasy book, Ashes of Revenge (98k words). I am seeking Beta Readers to either read the entire manuscript or any number of chapters you wish to read!

In the land of Corrail, five species use hate and spite to make the land a violent cesspool. Raven, a badly burned teenager, knows that better than anyone. Betrayed by her Kingdom and left for dead in enemy territory, she wants nothing but revenge against the Mundus King who betrayed her.

Helping her achieve her goal are two other people from differing species, creating an unlikely trio: Colt, a Shifter – a species with knives hiding under their skin – who has experienced the same betrayal from his own Kingdom; and Richard, a stern Farian with massive black wings attached to his back. Together, the three reign down terror on anyone who tries to stop them or destroy the Farian Kingdom, the only one of the five that opposes submitting to the bloodthirsty King of the Monstros.

However, they are set off course when a new player enters Raven’s game: Death. Using the only two people she cares about as leverage, he forces her to prematurely return to the Mundus Kingdom. But vengeance courses so fast beneath her skin that nothing can stop her from getting what she wants. Not even Death.

You can message me here or PM me or send me an email at mstegall18@gmail.com!

Thanks :)

My novel is a clean mystery involving an amateur private eye with supernatural powers. This novel is complete and in its umpteenth (7th) draft and ready for fresh eyes and new perspectives.

The word count is around 85K, with 32 chapters told in the first person of the private eye. Would like the beta reads completed within 4–6 weeks.

Here’s the blurb I’m going with for now:

Children have gone missing in Metro City, and the police are all out of resources—except one. Will Jones, a Feeler, is called upon as a private consultant to the MCPD to aid them in finding the innocents before it’s too late.

Haunted by his past, uncertain of his future, Jones must reacquaint himself with his out-of-practice empath abilities before he can hope to rescue the missing in time.

I came across your post and would love to connect! I’m the editor for Alice Rose McQueen, who’s working on a unique urban fantasy series titled Clan of Bruce - The Last Vampire Family. While it’s technically fantasy, the heart of the story is really in the characters and their development—a 700-year-old vampire family entrenched in Scotland’s aristocracy, struggling with family dynamics, legacy, and modern-day challenges.

We’d love to get your honest and thorough feedback, particularly on plot and character growth, as these are central to the series. If this sounds interesting to you, I’d be happy to send more details and discuss further!

Thanks so much for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Babs Ray | 3 comments Hi Sarah-- I'd love to get your feedback on my mystery novel. Here's the pitch:

Former Chicago cop Zella Agha, burned out from her job as a homicide detective and grief-stricken after losing the love of her life in a police shooting, has packed up and moved to the California desert community Palm Springs, where her recently deceased aunt Bev had a home in a posh condo development. Zella has one goal in mind: to learn how to raise goats so she can live alone and make cheese in the high desert near Joshua Tree.

But when her aunt’s best friend is murdered, Zella reluctantly agrees to help solve the case, and in doing so uncovers a conspiracy among wealthy investors to buy desert land for the water rights, which they then sell to LA for massive profits. Her discoveries put her in the crosshairs of the most powerful people in any desert—those with the rights to the water. As she works to solve the mystery, Zella’s life plan is sidetracked by the return of her mother, a con artist, a handsome goat farmer, and a condo complex full of eccentric retirees.

I'd like input on a) whether the story is engaging and keeps readers turning pages, b) is the mystery revealed at a good pace or is it too easy to figure out? and c) whether the characters are compelling and you want to read more about them.

Thanks for considering this.
Barbara Ray

Michael Roth | 12 comments Hi Sarah,

I would love for you to read my uplifting Post-Apocalyptic Catholic Action-Adventure story (195k words).

Blurb -

It is the cusp of the end of religious freedom in the United States as the government enacts new draconian anti-religious laws, and churches of many denominations begin organizing an underground effort to fight the rising persecution.

Before they can ramp up their struggle, a mysterious and terrible enemy appears. This new threat is bent on the destruction of all mankind or its subjugation under their rule. Lukas Dubois, a recent widower and Vatican Astronomer, along with the Roman Pontiff get caught up in the events. When international leaders refuse to submit, the enemy ruthlessly attacks.

In the immediate aftermath, society swiftly crumbles and thrusts people into a new medieval age without an apparent explanation, forcing Catholic husband and father, Greg Meyer, who is also a martial artist, to engage in a fight for the survival of his family. Greg focuses his efforts on recreating a knightly order of the Catholic Church to combat the new challenges. Adapt or die is the catchphrase.

Will the creation of a new Knightly Order be the world’s only chance?

Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks!

Steven Freeman | 57 comments I'm in the process of writing a romcom that I expect will be between 50K - 60K words when complete.

Here's the early version of the blurb...

Allan is a too-trusting neurologist who has a secret: a genetically engineered dog with an intelligence exceeding that of most humans. When he falls for science podcaster Trish, the inexperienced scientist seeks dating advice from everyone in his circle. Only over time does he discover the best advice comes from Louie, his experimental canine.

Heather is a romantically wary colleague who is forced to work with Allan on a company project, despite her repugnance towards the man who bears a striking resemblance to her ex. At first, Heather encourages the match between Allan and Trish. But as she comes to know Allan--and as Trish's character comes to light--she has a change of heart.

Can the pair of scientists--one too trusting, the other not trusting at all--find their way into each other's hearts?

I would love to hear your feedback!

I have a short (17,724 words) Police Procedural/Thriller that I have been working on. I have gotten to the point where I need a few sets of new eyes to look at it.

If you have the time and inclination I would be interested in having you read it.

Thank you either way.

I have a YA Sci-fi novel I just finished. It is my first novel ever! I would really appreciate it if you would look at it, as it is very character driven and the arcs are very important. It is clean and around 62,000 words. If interested, please let me know. I thank you for your time and consideration.

Ms. C | 23 comments Hi there,

My name is Mary and I have a manuscript for a novel called "Mullo". I am looking for beta readers to read and critique it, and I saw your advertisement in a Goodreads "Beta Reader Group". I would describe "Mullo" as historical fiction, horror, romance. It goes back and forth between a story that takes place in the past and one that takes place in the present. Here is a blurb I wrote for it:

"THEN
In 19th century Romania, death is always just around the corner. Zorya, a Roma healer woman, knows this well. But when a stranger unexpectedly calls on her expertise, she, her husband, and her children, find themselves in a place they were once forbidden from entering. But even as their life becomes more stable and prosperous, it may only take one tragedy for things to fall apart."

"NOW
Nick Alicea isn’t having a bad day. He’s having a bad life. Stuck in a dead-end job, drowning in debt, and haunted by a tragedy from his past, he's struggling. So, when a chance encounter leads to a friendship with Mirza Durvari, a quiet doctor with a mysterious illness, Nick’s life starts to seem a little less bleak. But even as their relationship becomes more intimate, Nick is forced to ask himself: Who is Mirza Durvari"

The entire manuscript is 125,000 words. Let me know if you are interested in beta reading.

Looking forward to hearing from you..

~Mary

James | 22 comments Hello,

Would you be interested in a gritty sci-fi novel?
80,000 words over 33 chapters.

It takes place about 300 years in the future, with humanity slowly crawling it's way across the galaxy, establishing independent colonies. Not a eutopia but not a dystopia either. Just real people getting by in the real world.

Here's a teaser quote: “The Terran Knights are equal parts warriors, scholars, merchants, and rogues. They’re not just fighters—they’re thinkers, philosophers, dealmakers, and tricksters when it suits them.”

Synopsis

When mysterious mercenary Matt arrives on the frontier world of Saurath, he doesn't know what to expect. What he does know is he was hired to help one Anika Veyr with an investigation with no details on what that investigation is. But Vyrnathys, the planet’s capital, hides more than dust and politics. Beneath the neon glow of Little India and the slums beyond, something sinister is stirring.

Tracker Anika Veyr, a human-Luparan hybrid with a reputation for tenacity, has been chasing whispers—children vanishing without a trace and a city council that seems too eager to look the other way. Together, Matt and Anika begin to unravel a conspiracy that stretches from the streets to the highest levels of power.

And possibly beyond....

As the investigation deepens, the pair must navigate hostile terrain, political duels, and their own growing connection. But time is running out, and the cost of truth may be exile—or worse.

The Saurath Connection is a gritty sci-fi thriller that blends noir mystery, space opera, and character-driven drama. It’s the beginning of a long war for justice—and the first step in a much larger journey.

Content warning: violence, kidnapping, torture, disfigurement.

Let me know if that sounds interesting!

James

Kelly | 40 comments Hi Sarah!

If you're interested and still accepting manuscripts, I have a 95k YA sci-fi romance called "The Shadow of Tarensa." Below is a short summary:

---------

Norra has dreamt for years of finding someone like her, but her adoptive parents have never allowed her to leave her hometown. Life is hard enough for a teenage girl, and it’s even harder when you have no idea who you are or where you came from. Lacking anything normal like claws or feathers, her gangly limbs and flat face set her apart in any crowd.

Then, on her eighteenth birthday, Norra has a chance to get out into the real world during her rite of passage journey, with hopes of finally fitting in. However, everything changes when she is kidnapped by a warrior race called the R’caesa, who plan on taking her back to their capital city. While Norra is plotting her escape, she meets another one of their prisoners: a mysterious, shrouded man known only as “the Shadow” whose people, as legends say, came from another world. Norra has always wanted to see a human in real life since she has never really believed the stories about their godlike silver skin and flying ships.

Eventually, Norra is able to make an escape, taking the Shadow along with her. But, even after he’s free, why won’t he lift his veil?

(P.S. If it isn't clear in the summary, Norra is a human too.)

---------

Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in. Thank you!

Dalila | 4 comments Hi Sarah, Hope all is well.

I’m looking for a few kind beta readers for my completed memoir, Never Again (about 140 pages). It’s a deeply personal story about love, betrayal, loss, resilience, and ultimately healing. The book deals with themes such as mental harassment, stillbirth, grief, survival, and rediscovering strength.
I would love honest, compassionate feedback from the perspective of a reader. Specifically:
• Were there parts that deeply engaged you or moved you?
• Were there any areas where the pacing felt slow or confusing?
• Did the emotions come across as real and powerful?
• Any parts that felt repetitive or unclear?

I’m not looking for grammar corrections — just your reactions as a reader.

📖 Length: ~142 pages / 56,000 words
📌 Format: PDF or Word (whichever you prefer)
💌 Timeline: Flexible, but within 3–4 weeks would be amazing.

If you’re interested, please reply here or send me a DM. I’d be very grateful, and I’d be happy to swap reads if you’re also working on something!

Thank you
Dalila

Steve Haddon | 6 comments Hi Sarah,

I've written a novel. It's my first ever novel - or in fact any kind of book. Obviously... I think it's a unique, (never been done before), story that cannot be pigeon-holed into a specific genre. Or, actually even adequately described. But I'll give it a try...

Captain Cat is not the main character. Obviously! He's just a cat. He does cat things and doesn't have any special powers which would, (for instance), have him talking, expressing an opinion or whatever. And my story is not about a cat. So you don't need to worry about him.

Martin is the main character. Captain Cat lives with him - but that's not important. Martin has been tasked with saving the world... by God (maybe?). Who knows? Not Martin. What Martin does know is: as a middle-aged science teacher living out in the sticks, (in Llareggub, Wales), he definitely wouldn't have picked himself for the job. Particularly as he gets dragged into trying to convince the most stupid, ignorant people on the planet, (yeah, politicians), that something needs to be done. He's not good with stressful situations, and he's finding this quite stressful. So he does a lot of swearing. So do his mates.

The moral of the story is: Greed is NOT good. I guess it could be described as political... maybe. And I hope that it is, at times, funny and easy to read. But I am too close to the story to have any certainty about that. Which is why I need a beta reader... who's not offended by swearing.

It's 65K words and "finished". By "finished", I mean, I am up to my neck in it and can no longer type another word.

P.S. Did I mention it contains swearing?

John | 92 comments Hi,
I'm looking for a beta reader for the opening passage of my literary novel titled Afterglow King. It's 1200 words long. Here is the summary:

In a quiet coffee shop in Albany, Oregon, elderly Pete Shehann crosses paths with Alex, a younger stranger whose curiosity is piqued by something Pete says. A shared table, a spilled coffee, and a familiar book set the stage for a growing connection between them. Despite Pete’s reluctance, Alex’s quiet persistence and genuine interest draw him in. As they talk, something about Alex—and the moment—makes Pete reconsider his long-held silence. What begins as a casual exchange gradually becomes the opening to a much deeper story.

Chris Marshall | 16 comments Hi Sarah I have a first draft of (what I would call a novella at the minute-some 46,000 words). It's a Philosophical Fantasy. "After his sudden death, ruthless corporate executive Richard Ainsworth is enrolled in a bizarre afterlife trial: 17 weeks each in Heaven, Hell, and a third realm. Guided by a celestial bureaucracy, he must confront his past, manipulate new systems, and decide his eternal fate. But as the lines between realms blur, Richard realises the trial isn't about where he's going—it's about who he's willing to become."

Would you be interested in giving me your feedback on the plot and characters, as well as any other aspects of writing that you review? Cheers...Chris
