NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11071 comments When I saw this lovely little gem on the dragon tag list, I had to smile. I knew I loved it when I read it three years ago (which is just long enough to have forgotten most of the plot). The writing is very lyrical, and the narrator has a unique sound that worked well for this book. This used to be one of my go-to audios for nights when I needed to shut out the day in order to get to sleep. This was a very enjoyable read, I wasn’t bored at all. My perceptions of the three main characters shifted somewhat with this reading, as I noticed different things. The main character is magical but cannot speak, the king turns into an eagle every night. (It us vaguely reminiscent of the film LadyHawke.)

This is a fantasy with a couple who are trying to save the kingdom from (man made) creatures or devastation. There is young romance and political intrigue. The plot sounds familiar so far, but in this book the dragon is evil and doesn’t appear until the last hour. Based on other fantasy books I’ve read this year, you wouldn’t expect I would like it, but the author’s use of language delighted me. Words have power in the story and the author played with that concept in a few different ways.

Nicole | 681 comments This sounds wonderful, your love of the book is very compelling and the Goodreads blurb reinforces the lyrical voice you mentioned. I could hear it immediately and now I just have to know - adding it to the tbr. Very excited to get to this one. :)

Amy | 12916 comments You know, I put some dragon into my month. And one more is coming. Actually two more. But I think I might just have to pick this one up because Amy Harmon is one of those that I would like to finish her canon.

I hope you love it too. You might want to listen to the audio sample before you get it. If you don’t like the beginning, you might not like the rest. This author’s books are hard to get from libraries because the publisher doesn’t work with the approved distributors. (It’s affiliated with Amazon.)

I think you will like it. It’s also shorter than some of the other books you were considering.
